Addressing Communication Gap
Humanity is plagued by division. While diversity of ideas is crucial to any democratic system, our unwillingness to deliberate with those of varying opinions is creating a continuously enlarging rift that is becoming more problematic by the day. This rift is exacerbating society's issues and preventing action. From various backgrounds, beliefs, and positions, we unite here with the collective goal to alleviate society's communication gap.
To move forward, we must find common ground.
Public Forums
What is it?
The Public Forums hosted by the CGC serve as a safe platform for discussing a multitude of pressing topics that shape our lives. These forums stand apart from many other discussion platforms primarily due to their unique focus.
Rather than concentrating on swaying initial opinions or engaging in debates where one side emerges victorious, the CGC’s Public Forums are dedicated to fostering understanding and discovering common ground. The objective is not to alter pre-existing beliefs but to broaden perspectives and encourage understanding through open dialogue.
These forums are not about winning or losing. Instead, they are safe havens for free expression, where individuals can articulate their viewpoints, listen to others, and engage in respectful discourse. The emphasis is on explaining and understanding diverse perspectives and promoting a social norm of mutual respect and learning.
In essence, the CGC’s Public Forums are more than just platforms for discussion; they are catalysts for growth, understanding, and unity in our increasingly divided world. They embody the belief that through conversation and open-mindedness, we can find common ground.
How Do Public Forums Work?
All of our Public Forums have a moderator, a position which is fulfilled by a selected CGC board member. The role of the moderator is to ensure discussion remains respectful and that an environment of free speech is always upheld.
The moderator enforces a loose 2-minute speaker time limit and deals out strikes as necessary. The moderator also selects who speaks to provide format to the forum. When selecting the next speaker, the moderator will first open the floor for volunteers who want to express an opposing viewpoint. If no one volunteers, the floor becomes open to anyone. Those who wish to speak can express their intent by raising their hand once the floor is opened to them.
