The NYC subway is operated by the Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA).
The New York City MTA subway and bus system operates in all five boroughs 24 hours a day, seven days a week and is inexpensive way to get to and from your classes.
You can pay with your tap-to-pay credit card with the OMNY system, or purchase a weekly or monthly Metrocard.
OMNY is "the contactless fare payment system for public transportation in the New York region. Simply use your contactless credit or debit card, smart phone, wearable device, or an OMNY card to tap and go." (omny.info)
It is a pay-as-you-go system which does not require a MetroCard. If you tap 12 times in the same week with the same payment method, all additional rides that week are free.
When paying with OMNY, one ride costs $2.90, regardless of distance or amount of time on the subway.
However, you can still buy a MetroCard if you would like one, or if you do not have a tap-to-pay credit card.
An unlimited monthly MetroCard costs $132.00.
An unlimited weekly MetroCard costs $34.00.
For both of these types of MetroCards, there is a one-time fee of $1.00 for a new MetroCard.
