Information

Arrival

Directions from University bus stop

The bus deposits you directly in front of the Department of Physics. Upon (carefully!) crossing the road, you should find yourself faced with a double set of stairs flanking the entrance doors. These doors are circled in the adjacent image.  Enter through these doors (after 9:00 AM).

After entering the building, you will begin your trek to the workshop venue on the third floor. Small workshop flyers with arrows will be in place to help guide you to your destination. As you enter, note that there is a ticket machine towards your right (slightly hidden behind a large pillar) which can be used to purchase return bus tickets to the city center should the need arise.

n.b. When exiting from these doors, it may be necessary to open them by pressing a button off to their side!

Your trajectory is illustrated by the dashed orange line in the map at left. The aim is to navigate to a stairwell surrounded by computer labs, ignoring the red arrows in this map. Once this stairwell has been located, use it to access the third floor.

After achieving the third floor, leave the stairwell and walk down the corridor which is more or less directly in front of you. You will pass the workshop's "Seminar Room 3", before arriving at a small clearing where coffe/snacks will be held.

Office Space

Office space will be available for participants. The local group's offices are on the second floor of the physics department, beneath the workshop venue:

Elias Kiritsis in 208, Vasilis Niarchos in 205, Achilleas Porfyriadis in 202, and Chris Rosen in 247.

Food and Drink

Lunch options

A light lunch will be provided each day of the workshop, consisting of small sandwiches and juice/water. This will be held in the space directly in front of the workshop.

A cantina exists on the ground floor of the same building, where one can find an assortment of coffees and drinks, as well as various snacks (like spinach pies, cream pies, meat pies,...many pies). The cantina also has a few more substantial plates on their menu, which are made to order.

For a more hearty lunch, the cafeteria at the national research center FORTH/ITE may be the best (although not closest) bet. It is about a 15 minute walk from the university, following (with attention to traffic) this route. Upon entering the building through the doors atop the amphitheater-style staircase, one finds the cafeteria by walking towards the end of the long corridor directly ahead. There is seating with a pleasant view outside, weather permitting.

A closer option, for those willing to explore a bit, is the cafeteria in the medical school. This building is across the road from the physics department--to find the cafeteria one should turn right after entering the main doors and head for a stairwell towards the end of the hall. The cafeteria is on the ground floor.

Dinner options

The workshop will host a dinner on Tuesday (06/06) evening, around 20:00. The location is the restaurant Arismari and Varsamo, with the linked directions showing how to arrive by bus from the university. The restaurant is in easy walking distance from the city center, and (an athletic) stones throw from the Atrion hotel.

A second dinner will be hosted at the restaurant Gerakas, on Saturday (10/06) evening at 19:00. This restaurant can be accessed from either the city center or the university via bus number 1 (AERODROMIO), disembarking at the stop NEA ALIKARNASSOS. From, here, the restaurant is a short walk towards the sea.

There are a number of good places to dine in and around the city center. Apart from Arismari and Varsamo, good Cretan food can be found at Merastri and Erganos. For fish, one might try 7 Thalasses (expensive), Gerakas, or Delphini (the latter requiring a car to access).
