Cumbria FHS has compiled a series of 10 databases serving as an index to over 335,000 historical individuals in the old counties of Cumberland and Westmorland, plus Furness in Lancashire and Sedbergh in Yorkshire. These databases have been combined and are searchable altogether in a single operation  using the unified Cumbrian People Search interface on this website

In the future there will be additional content added for Will Indexes and Newspaper Transcriptionn Indexes.

Westmorland Hearth Tax 1674

It is a list of all inhabitants of Westmorland (not including the Borough of Kendal) who had a hearth on which to cook in the year 1674 and on which they were taxed.

Westmorland Window Tax 1777

 3.2k records

The Window Tax replaced the hated Hearth Tax It was less invasive as assessors did not have to enter dwellings to count the windows. House occupiers were taxed on the number of their windows.

Westmorland Census 1787

This was a 'census' of 1787 (also known as the Constables' Census) the surviving returns of which are held at the Kendal Record Office of Cumbria Archives Service.

The Record Office reference is WQ/SP/C. They are transcribed in Vital Statistics published by Curwen Archives Trust 1992 - ISBN 1897590008.

They contain names of all householders, their families and tenants, and their occupations.
