The Catholic Faith Defenders' humble beginnings can be traced back to 1935 at San Nicolas Parish in Cebu, where dedicated laymen, guided by their Parish Priest, Fr. Undoy Reynes, engaged in discussions on Catholic doctrines and addressed objections from Aglipayans, a prevalent religious group at the time. The addition of Bro. Peter Cabaluna, affectionately known as "The Walking Bible," solidified this nascent group of Catholic Faith Defenders.
In 1946, brothers Martin and Domingo Berido, assistants to Fr. Gerald Trenekeins, MSC of Virgen de la Regla (Virgin of the Rule), were already actively answering questions about the Catholic faith from those who challenged it. Further, in 1953, at Santo Rosario Parish, Monsignor Esteban Monticillo trained laymen in religious debate and instructed them on the biblical foundations of Catholic teachings, leading to the formal establishment of the Catholic Faith Defenders.
In the modern era, the Catholic Faith Defenders has experienced significant growth. From its stronghold in Cebu City, the organization has expanded its presence to Manila, Quezon, Laguna, Cavite, Davao, Zamboanga, Ormoc, Cagayan De Oro, Tagum, Dumaguete, and numerous other locations. Comprising members from diverse backgrounds, the Catholic Faith Defenders effectively connects with people from all walks of life. Beyond Archdioceses and Parishes, the organization has established chapters in various Universities, addressing the intellectual and spiritual needs of students. Notable examples include the University of Southeastern Philippines and the University of Mindanao.
In 2023, Renzo Ralton M. Duran, then a freshman at MDC, deeply admired the mission of the Catholic Faith Defenders. He envisioned a brighter future for the school, believing that small acts of faith could make a significant difference. Observing that many of his Catholic friends preferred independent Bible study, often distancing themselves from priests and Mass, Renzo saw a need for a community that could bridge this gap. Inspired to establish a CFD chapter at MDC, Renzo began the arduous process of officialization. Despite his efforts, the initial paperwork was unfortunately lost. Undeterred, Renzo persevered, and with renewed determination, he successfully officialized the MDC chapter in 2025.
Renzo's journey was significantly aided by the guidance and mentorship of Mr. Cito, Mr. Marvin, and Sir. Joven Jalbuna, experienced CFD members who generously shared their knowledge and insights. Their support proved invaluable in forming the MDC chapter's foundation. In a remarkable turn of events, Sir. George Pette Aranas, a Foundation University graduate and MDC teacher, volunteered to serve as the chapter's advisor, providing invaluable leadership, wisdom, encouragement, and support.
