Shanna Emmanuel has always had a passion for environmental causes and has used this passion to be able to impact her country as much as possible. Having a Bachelor of Science in Biology, and a Master's Degree in Marine Affairs and Resource Management, Shanna has always wanted to work in the environment field. Starting her career as a marine biologist in the Fisheries Department of the Government of Saint Lucia, allowed Shanna to work directly with vulnerable stakeholders from fishers to their extended families, and those who perform secondary fisheries jobs. This allowed her to see how small changes in behavior can go a long way in conserving the environment and being able to provide more sustainable livelihoods for the fishers. Shanna then went to work with the Department of Sustainable Development where she supported the Climate Change, Biodiversity, and Oceans teams, here, there was even more growth in the nexus between environmental sustainability and social inclusion. She was able to participate in several training sessions that would involve the Gender and environment safeguard policies that were needed to meet international commitments. In 2020, Shanna joined the Environmental Sustainability Division of the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) Commission, as a Programme Officer within the Climate Change Unit. Here she works with 11 Caribbean Member States and supports them in meeting their Climate Change commitments, but also works to articulate some of their special vulnerabilities and to seek to develop Caribbean-specific solutions to the climate crisis. Shanna is a proud member of the Caribbean Youth Environment Network - Saint Lucia Chapter, and currently serves as a Board Member of the Saint Lucia National Conservation Fund, and sits on their Technical Advisory Committee, recently Shanna has become a member of the Initiative for Climate Action and Transparency as an Advisory Committee Member.
