What's Good Geographers!
First, I would like to thank you all for being here and choosing to take this course (Physical Geography - GEOG 101). This liquid Syllabus will provide all the relevant information needed for class to stay organized and informed. I look forward to the engagement that will come from this Physical Geography class via Canvas and in getting to know you all through academia.

Course Structure & Timeline:
This course is 100% online asynchronous. There will be no on-campus meetings, nor will there be any scheduled online Zoom meetings required. This course will work on a weekly cycle, with each week beginning on Monday morning at (12:00am) and ending the following Sunday night at (11:59pm).
Cerritos College Course Catalog Description: This course investigates the interrelationships/geographical patterns of the physical elements of the human environment (e.g., weather/climate, landform, soils, water, natural vegetation). Physical concepts and processes are placed in an ecological context.
The general concepts provided in the course catalog description will be re-enforced and further expanded upon throughout the term of this class.

Classify the major landscape shaping processes and summarize how such processes operate over time to modify earth's physical landscapes.
Label the seven major parallels and demonstrate the significance of each parallel in relation to the global pattern of insolation.
Identify the principle component of the Earth-Sun relationship including Earth's movements, seasons, and solar energy balance.
Interpret the driving forces of atmospheric winds and the global pattern of winds in the Earth’s atmosphere.
Illustrate the rock cycle and contrast the processes that create igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks.
Describe the processes responsible for plate tectonics and the surficial expressions created by such processes.

About Jason Scott
To start, I'm a first generation college graduate in my family. My degrees as follows; AA Geography from Cerritos College (2009), BA & MA Geography from CSULA (2012 & 2017). Los Angeles is my I'm from, south central LA to be precise. As a kid, I bounced around a lot from LA to Wyatts, Compton, Carson, south Dallas, TX (1996-2002), and I settled in Long Beach in 2008. I'm biracial or of "mixed" ancestry given that my late mother was African American with deeper family roots from Arkansas & South Carolina. My father is Indigenous, or otherwise known as Native America/First Nations People from the Cahuilla Band of Indians out of Palm Desert/Coachella Valley, California. From my freshman year, I worked my way through college with prior careers in government, healthcare, and teaching as of 2016-present.
In my spare time, I absolutely love to travel as I've have visited over 25 countries with more planned. In 2021, I fortunate to live and teach abroad in Costa Rica and I have lived in Thailand intermittently over the years. As from that, exercising, cooking, family time, crypto, meditation, and going to the beach are some of the things that are a part of my routine. My immediate life goal is to continue to strive for daily balance.

Hess, Darrel McKnight's Physical Geography: A Landscape Appreciation, 13th ed. ISBN: 9780134195421. (Not a required text to posses. Video & audio lectures will be provided by me from this textbook)
18 Week Online Format
18 Week Online Format
An 18 week course rather in-person or online is a bit longer in term than what is offered at most campuses in the state, but this 18 week term will provides students with the opportunity to consume more geography knowledge.
You are expected to review course materials, study, and submit all assignments by the assigned due dates. All of such will require you to set aside between 4-6 hours out of each week to thrive at your best in this class.
All of the lectures will be recorded with accessibility captioning provided. I advise students to be sure that you have adequate access to a stable internet connection to avoid technical issues from arising.
Every week a combination of weekly assignments, discussions, quizzes/exams, projects, and research assignments will be due. More than likely on average 2-3 assignments will be due each week.
All coursework is due at the end of the assigned week which falls on a Sunday night by 11:59pm.
My goal is to make sure that students have all the tools, accessibility, two-way communication, and inspiration needed to excel in this class.
Students that do not participate in the first two weeks of class by submitting the coursework assigned will automatically be dropped. Exceptions can be made depending on the circumstance and if students properly communicate with me ahead of week 2's submission deadline if something is preventing you from completing your coursework by the established deadline. To be considered present for the first week of class, you will need to complete Week 1’s Module.
Teaching Philosophy
I believe that despite what may be going on in the lives of us individuals, and no matter where you come from in the world, learning incites creativity, innovation, and understanding as one walk towards the path of fulfillment. Therefore, it is my responsibility to do my very best in providing great structure for this class, excitement, competence in subject matter, and meaningful positive re-enforcement when needed. With that being stated, I want all students in my class to succeed and retain positive experiences beyond the letter grade that you will receive by the end of term. I recognize like many others, that the format of teaching/learning online compared to face-to-face can be very different when it comes to various methods deployed and the connections between a classroom that inspires academic/human growth. Another goal of mine is to mimic some of the things that work well from an in-person class to online. Also, to embrace and explore in depth the methods of online learning that make online learning special and of high quality for all students.
