If you need to hack an Android device, try a remote administration tool. Known more familiarly as a RAT, there are open-source RATs that are barebones and exorbitantly priced RATs that are more polished. There are also low-cost and polished RATs that aren't intended to be RATs at all, such as Cerberus, an anti-theft solution available right on Google Play.

Cerberus is marketed as an anti-theft program so that you or the police (with your assistance) can track down your Android phone if it's ever lost or stolen. However, while phone users see an anti-theft tool, hackers see a RAT that only costs 5 euros a year (about $5.80). That's a helluva lot cheaper than the $21.99 per month RAT that Tyrell Wellick used in Mr. Robot, and they have the same feature set.

As an anti-theft tool, Cerberus offers all the features that we've come to expect of a good RAT, including locating the device, backing up (aka stealing) data, locking or changing the PIN, wiping data, and taking photos. All of this and more can be done from any web browser or by sending special SMS text commands.

Cerberus has the ability to let you send any of its commands to the app on the target device through text messages. To do this, send a text to the target's phone number that begins with cerberus, space, your password, and then a command. This feature is useful when the device has cellular service but no data service.

Below are some of the most useful commands listed. Note that these SMS texts are not hidden, so the user will see them and likely figure out what's going on. This is more for fun, and may be more useful for those actually using this for anti-theft.

I realize this is an old topic, but the recent T-Mobile data breach caused me to review my security. I use CerberusApp and tolerate Bitdefender's and other anti-malware's constant (and undismissable, exception prohibitable) reminder that CerberusApp is dangerous malware. Fortunately my Malwarebytes does not do that (if it ever did) as I have a very old version. Interestingly Malwarebytes identified 1Password as malware but I made an exception.

Cerberus is very efficient, especially if the phone is rooted. But the developer is screwing with old users. First, when he changed the cerberus payment policy for new users (the service would be char...

His documentary, which already has over 6 million views on YouTube, covered the journey made by a stolen smartphone and how the theft and ensuing tracking affected all parties involved.

If Method 1 didn't work for you, you'll need a good root-enabled file browser. Beyond that, just head to the /data/app folder from the root partition of your device, then locate and copy the com.lsdroid.cerberus folder. Next, head to the /system/app folder from your root partition, then paste the Cerberus folder into this location.

Now that Cerberus is installed as a system app, it cannot be uninstalled using traditional methods, or by factory resetting your device. While Google provides its own tracking and anti-theft service through Android Device Manager, some users prefer third-party tools. One of these is Cerberus, a powerful and customizable anti-theft app that has been around for years. While in operation, it can completely hide any evidence that the phone is being tracked (even faking a shut-down), thus giving owners more time to get their stolen devices back.

I would like to know if you have tested any of them in you Apple device and could give me a hint before buying it. It will be a plus if it could detect if the 3G microSIM card is removed, and send an SMS to another mobile like Avast anti-theft application for Android does.

This app is the best one for iOS devices. Others have the limitation of sandboxing that Apple uses for security reasons. But sandboxing limits the features other anti-theft (it should be called "Recovery") apps can have.

I have just started my first main project - a simple anti-theft application, that when my the phone is been text-ed, if it contains a certain string, it will send a sms back to the originating address, telling it the location of the phone. However, I am at the moment only trying to get the to phone receive a sms, check if it is containing the string, get the location, and then toast the location on the phone. My problem is, as I am very very new to android programming/Java (Only 15) I'm having trouble with passing my location from my MainActivity to my Broadcast Receiver. I am getting a Null Pointer exception - this is when my application manages to get the gps location. Also a point to note out, I am using 'Cerberus Anti-theft', as my main anti-theft, could this cause any errors?
