Choosing furnace insulation sounds easy until the quotes land on your desk. Blanket or board? Both have loyal fans, and both have limits. At Zhongsheng Fiberglass, we make heat-resistant materials for factories every day, so we hear this question often. Here, we compare a ceramic fiber blanket with rigid board in plain terms, so you can decide with confidence.
Let’s start with the basics. A ceramic fiber blanket is a soft, flexible roll made from spun alumina-silica fibres. You cut it, fold it and wrap it around whatever needs protecting. Rigid boards, however, are pressed into hard panels that keep their shape.
Here is how they differ at a glance:
Flexibility: the blanket bends around corners, while the board stays flat.
Weight: the blanket is lighter and easier to carry.
Strength: board resists knocks and surface wear better.
Fitting: board needs accurate cutting, whereas the blanket forgives small errors.
Furnaces rarely have perfect walls. A ceramic insulation blanket adapts to curves, door frames and tight gaps without fuss. Fitters simply cut it to size and compress it slightly into place, which saves hours on site.
Thermal movement matters too. Furnaces expand and contract constantly, and a ceramic insulation blanket absorbs that movement. A rigid panel, by contrast, may crack at the joints over time.
It also stores very little heat. As a result, your furnace reaches working temperature sooner and wastes less fuel.
Rigid boards are not the bad guys here. They work well on flat walls, in areas with fast-moving hot gases, and in spots where workers might brush against the lining.
Boards are a good fit for:
Flat, regular wall sections
Zones with heavy gas flow
Surfaces that see physical contact
The downsides are weight, brittleness and slower installation. Cutting boards also creates plenty of dust, so proper protection is essential. Because of this, many plants put a ceramic fiber blanket behind the board as a backing layer and get the benefits of both.
Short answer: yes, provided you pick the right grade. A good ceramic fire blanket copes with repeated heating and cooling without turning brittle too quickly. Higher density usually means better strength and lower heat loss.
Always match the grade to your real working temperature, not just the occasional peak. A ceramic fiber blanket rated too low will fail early, and that gets expensive fast.
Safety comes first in any furnace room. A fire resistant blanket also protects the things around the furnace, such as cables, pipes and control equipment, from stray heat.
Our factory produces fibreglass fabrics and fire blankets for construction, transport, electronics and chemical users. Therefore, we know how different each site’s demands can be, and we never push a one-size-fits-all answer.
A fiberglass needle mat suits secondary jobs, such as covering expansion joints or wrapping lower-temperature pipework. It will not replace ceramic fibre in the hottest zones. Even so, it adds a sensible extra layer where conditions are milder.
Run through these points first:
Normal operating temperature and peak spikes
Wall shape, flat or curved
Risk of knocks and abrasion
Budget and fitting time
Dust control and handling
Also remember that a ceramic insulation blanket comes in different densities, so compare like for like. Ask suppliers for test data as well. We check pull strength, weight, thickness and heat performance in our own testing centre, and we back our fibreglass materials with a one-year warranty.
For most furnaces, flexibility wins. A ceramic fiber blanket is lighter, quicker to fit and kinder to thermal movement. Rigid board still earns its place on flat, high-contact surfaces, and a mix of both often works best.
Whichever route you take, Zhongsheng Fiberglass can help. We offer custom designs with samples within two weeks, so send us your project details and we will quote quickly.
Can I use a blanket and board together?
Yes. The board usually forms a hot face, while the blanket sits behind it as extra insulation.
How thick should the blanket be?
It depends on temperature and wall design. A ceramic insulation blanket is often layered in stages, so share your specifications and we will advise.
Does a blanket release dust?
It can during cutting and fitting. Wear gloves and a mask, and seal the edges neatly.
Can I get a sample before ordering?
Certainly. We send a free A4 sample anywhere in the world.
