CEPBI Roundtable AT 2024 ACR Paris

SEP 27, 2024

Our roundtable on integrating philosophical thought into consumer research drew strong interest and participation at the 2024 Association for Consumer Research Conference in Paris. The session sparked dynamic discussions, with more questions than answers, showing the relevance of philosophy to key issues like cognition, morality, and technology in consumer research. It was an exciting exchange of ideas, pointing to promising new directions for future research.

Here’s a short overview of the topics and speakers that fueled the discussions:

• June Cotte, Ivey Business School: Contradictions in philosophy and marketing ethics on autonomy

• Klaus Wertenbroch, INSEAD: Prediction algorithms and belief in free will

• Simona Botti, London Business School: Types of freedom

• Amna Kirmani, Robert H. Smith School of Business: AI, consciousness, and the Chinese Room Experiment

• Craig Smith, INSEAD: Social contract theory and Rawls’ “veil of ignorance”

• Philip Fernbach, Leeds School of Business: Inferential processes, Confirmation theory

• Fleura Bardhi, Bayes Business School: Postmodernity and alternative hedonism

• Jonathan Berman, London Business School: Peter Singer’s drowning child thought experiment

• Shreyans Goenka, Virginia Tech: Utilitarianism

The engagement and ideas shared made it clear that philosophy has much to offer in shaping the future of consumer research.

SECOND ONLINE TANDEM TALK 2024

'HUMANITY AND VULNERABILITY: GENERATIVE AI IN THE MARKET AND SOCIETY'

May 15, 2024

Our second tandem talk, titled 'Humanity and Vulnerability: Generative AI in the Market and Society,' took place on May 15th from 6-7 pm CET (12/noon EST). It featured philosopher Colin Allen (Professor of Philosophy, University of California Santa Barbara) and behavioral scientist Julian De Freitas (Assistant Professor of Marketing, Harvard Business School).

In this conversational discussion, Colin drew on his recent work on developing wisdom about (and in?) AI and explained his view on why developers and users are often poorly calibrated to the actual capacities of AI systems. Julian presented his studies on chatbots and mental health, drawing insights into the health risks of generative AI. Together, they sparked new and deeper thinking about AI in the marketplace, inspired new research questions, and confronted both the potential and limits of rapidly-changing technologies.

In the short video below, we provide some snippet cuts from the talk.
