About the LICCC
This project and the introductory conference has been established as a critical element in efforts to enhance resiliencies of communities, and to mitigate, and respond to the coastal concerns facing the Long Island Shore. Speakers and participants will include speakers and representatives from government, environmental organizations, universities, and community groups. The purpose of this meeting is to establish a dialogue amongst representatives and concerned officials to provide a forum by which coastal parties can dialogue and exchange information to provide the basis for further action by Long Island Constituencies on thwarting future "Sandy" impacts and other water related coastal issues.
CDRS was urged to establish a Council of Coastal Communities on the shore of Long Island that are threatened by storms and other occurrences typical to the waterfront of impacted communities. Threats include sea level rise, more predictive severe coastal storms, loss of salt marsh habitats, structural damage to communities, infrastructure destruction and many other impacts on the coasts of the Long Island Sound and the Atlantic Ocean and tributaries. Studies by Climate Central 501c3 reveal that Long Island has already experienced 12 inches of sea level rise over the last 93 years of record and climate change is projected to drive much more rise this century. Ongoing sea-level rise raises the starting point for storm surges and high-tides, making coastal floods more severe and frequent.
