About the ICAN Group
Artificial Intelligence, Complex Systems, Adaptive Systems and Networks (ICAN) lab is a multi-disciplinary undergraduate research group conducting research in various fields. The goal of the lab is to advance the research in the field(s) as well as further participants' scholarly knowledge and skills. The research contributions of the lab are submitted for publication at conferences, peer-review journals etc. The lab fosters a collaborative and interdisciplinary environment that is essential for solving problems in fields that include: engineering, health care, arts, energy, industrial applications, and physical sciences.
Complex Systems
The group's overarching theme is research in complex and natural systems. A complex system is a system that has an emergent global behavior and is hard to analyze from the behavior of its constituent parts. This anti-reductionistic view is common in the fields of system science, network theory, system biology, economics etc.
Complex Systems @ UAA
A small group of curious and inquiring faculty, students and members of the community began meeting on the University of Alaska Anchorage Campus in 1998, seeking a means to develop and facilitate discussion among individuals interested in complex systems theory and practice. Their early round table discussions back in 1998 were somewhat informal but laid a crucial foundation for the growth of complex systems at UAA. A formal seminar series was organized and introduced to the campus in January 1999. The group's guest lecture series and curriculum development began in 2001 and continues through today. We are beginning to align with industry for problem resolution, and we look forward to continued expansion.
