Alan Yang was born in China into a family of musicians. He received his Bachelor’s degree in Cello Performance from the Wuhan Conservatory of Music in China and later earned his Master’s degree and Artist Diploma in Cello Performance from Indiana University in the U.S.

During his studies at the Wuhan Conservatory of Music, Alan was a member of the East Symphony Orchestra and the East Chamber Orchestra. In 2001, he joined The First China Cello Orchestra, led by Swiss cello master Albert Roman. The highly gifted members of the orchestra were selected from China’s leading music academies. They performed in Sils, Scuol, Lucerne, and Basel in Switzerland, as well as Beijing, Jinan, Shanghai, and Suzhou in China. In 2003, Alan was invited to perform at the Elitist Concert organized by the Texas Chinese Performing Arts Association, where he was awarded the prestigious Honorary Citizen Certificate by the Dallas city government.

Alan has been teaching private cello lessons since 2002 and has been teaching full-time in the Bay Area since 2006. He was a faculty member at the Community School of Music and Arts in Mountain View and has also been a faculty member of the California Youth Chinese Orchestra. Additionally, he is a member of the Chinese Music Teachers’ Association of Northern California (CMTANC) and the American String Teachers Association (ASTA). Alan has performed with the Southwest Michigan Symphony Orchestra, Silicon Valley Philharmonic, and Silicon Valley Symphony and was the Principal Cellist of the South Bay Symphony. He has also instructed the beginner and intermediate string orchestras at Hopkins Junior High in Fremont.

Alan’s students have participated in various youth symphonies in the Bay Area including SFSYO, SJYS, CYS, GSYO,FYSO and CODA All -State Jr High School Orchestra. In addition to his teaching experience, Alan is a professional brass and woodwind instruments repair technician and loves to compose music.

As a cello teacher, my teaching objective is to impart systematic professional knowledge and skills, helping students develop solid performance techniques, keen musical perception, and profound artistic cultivation. I hope my students will not only master the technical aspects of cello playing but also gain a deep understanding of the characteristics of different musical genres and styles, including works from the Classical, Romantic, Modern, and other periods. By guiding them to explore the diversity and expressiveness of music, I aim to enable them to independently interpret and perform various styles of musical works, develop their own artistic expression, and continue to grow and excel on their musical journey.
