I have experience teaching art at all age levels, from pre-school to senior citizens. In 2019, I was fortunate to have tutored in Los Angeles Unified School District through an Americorps Program. While serving, I lead an art club for middle school students, and inderdisciplinarily incorporated art into math and reading interventions. Since then, I was an Arabic and Spanish language interpreter for Roanoke City Public Schools. This sparked an interest in multilingual art education and writing and implementing multilingual art curriculum at Skipwith Elementary and JL Francis during my graduate student career at Virginia Commonwealth University. In addition to these schools, I have worked in after school programs for the Visual Arts Center, the Glenn Allen Culutral Arts Center and Little Scholars, serving schools in Richmond City, Chesterfield and Henrico County. I have also been a teaching artist for Narratio, a program that supports young refugee and immigrant artists in the Richmond area.
I have a passion for teaching and am driven to make the art classroom a space for social emotional learning. Having intermediate abilities in Spanish and Arabic has been a huge asset for me, not only in communicating with students, but also in looping parents into our art classroom experiences. I love working in the pick up line, getting to know families, and making sure that students art projects reflect their ability to be helpful and reflective citizens in the school community and beyond. As an after school art teacher at Harvie Elementary in Henrico, I made beautification of our room essential with a laminated “stained glass” window project. As a student teacher at JL Francis, I worked with fifth graders to design interventions on our school fence. I am certainly a team player and view it as a great privilege to participate in an exciting learning environment.
