The Sudarshana Chakra

During the Great War that appeared in the Mahabharata, there was an instance of the divine interruption of Krishna, one of the avatars of Vishnu. What Krishna did was unfathomable; he had effectively blocked out the sun in favor of Arjuna, one of the central generals of the war, whom was also a devout worshipper of Krishna. This godly intervention was result of the Sudarshana Chakra, one of the fabled mighty weapons that was wielded by the deity Krishna, possessing the unmistakable power to block out the sun. This is the story of how the artifact came to be.

Vishnu

According to the ancient texts of Hinduism, Vishnu was on of three main gods, whose role was to preserve the world from seeing its end. Vishnu have been said to come to Earth in nine different forms, otherwise known as "avatars." The Sudarshana Chakra is his weapon of choice, holding the marvel in one of his four hands.

In ancient time, there was a weapon-smith and architect known as Vishvakarma, a renowned deity known throughout time and legend as the ultimate embodiment of creativity. He had a beloved daughter named Sanjana. There was nothing Vishvakarma wouldn't do for his daughter; she was his pride and joy, as with any parent. Later on in this timeframe, Sanjana was married to Surya, otherwise known as the "Deity of the Sun." Surya was the essentially the embodiment of the sun himself, and had the capacity of wielding that power in any way he chose to. Sanjana's relationship with Surya was a curious and frustrating one, as she couldn't go near Surya's intense heat that would set ablaze anyone that gets near him! Sanjana was flustered about this and complained to her father.

"Father, I can't ever get close to Surya. Every time I get close to him, I end up getting burned, literally. I just want to embrace him. Is there anything that you can do?"

Upon hearing this, the deity of creativity go to work. After countless days and night, he was successful in lessening the sun's powerful rays with the use of stardust that he had spewed into the atmosphere; that way, his daughter could embrace her husband. Then, with the stardust that he had leftover, he created three weapons. One of which was the Chakra. He had chosen the owner of mighty weapon to be none other than the deity, Vishnu, and bestowed upon him the weapon of destruction.

Vishvakarma

Otherwise known as the deity of creative power. According to ancient texts, it was he who devised and created the ancient monuments and other major works of architectural that were fit for the gods. According to the Rigveda, it was he who was "the divine engineer of the universe even before the advent of time."

How it came to the hands of Krishna was another story.

One of Vishnu's many incarnations was a brahmin named Parashurama. Being known as one of the avatars of Vishnu, one of his many students was Krishna. One day, knowing that his teacher was coming around to the place where he was dedicating his life to worship, Krishna decided to come and ask for Parashurama's blessing in the accomplishment of his goals.

"Krishna, you are a powerful god, I don't know what I can give you. However, since you came asking for my blessing, I shall provide you with the Sudarshana Chakra to help you establish the peace with the world," Parashurama answered Krishna.

With this weapon, Krishna was able to vanquish any foe in his way. With approximately more than 10 million serrated blades, separated by two rows, Krishna was able to cut down, literally, anyone that presented him/herself as the enemy. The base of the Chakra itself also held the power to completely cover the sun, completely turning day into night within an instant. This was how Krishna and the Sudarshana Chakra influenced the Great War.

Author's Note: This story that I created was in reference to the legends of the Mahabharata and further research as to where the Chakra came to be and how it became in Krishna's possession. During the war depicted in the Mahabharata (Indian Myth and Legend by D. A. Mackenzie), Arjuna was unable to get past the defenses of Jayadratha, who seemingly had innumerable number of troops on his side. Arjuna felt like he was unable to attain revenge on Jayadratha, who killed his son during the war. Seeing this, Krishna aimed his Chakra to the heavens and blocked out the sun to lure out Jayadratha. And just as Jayadratha passed through his own defenses to celebrate his victory in the war, Krishna revealed the sun and Arjuna decapitated Jayadratha, exacting his revenge. Here, I depicted the story of how the weapon was created, as well as how the weapon was passed down to Krishna to support in the war. I added additional dialogue into the story as I saw fitting as to what the interactions between the characters in the story would have been like.
