Celeste Vannoy is a poet from Fauquier, Virginia whose poetry stems from a visceral appreciation of the natural world and the quiet complexities it reveals. She is drawn to the fleeting moments that invite us to slow down, to observe the small signs of life that might otherwise go unnoticed. For Celeste, writing is a way of paying attention: to the land, to memory, and to the emotions that linger beneath the surface of ordinary days. Her work seeks to capture those intimate intersections between the human experience and the natural world, where wonder, vulnerability, and transformation often meet.
The Flower Bed appeared in Wingless Dreamer’s 2026 autumn anthology, Paths to October.
Shape Shifting was awarded semi-finalist and appeared in Eber & Wein’s 2025 anthology, Figments of Fire.
The Flower Bed
“I like them all,”
My grandmother said,
“Tall, small, even when they fall,”
She said by the flower bed.
“Just look at this lily
He’s so full of life
But looks rather frilly
Does that discount his strife?
Pink, odd, or torn,
Each one is distinct-
They’re all naturally, wonderfully born!
That’s what makes them so succinct.
So yes, I like them all
Tall, small, especially when they fall.”
Leap from laughs, shudders, and still
Lead us to play and through our sorrow
Pick up the pieces with your comforting hands
Pull, poke, and prod me with curious fingers
Glide your delicate flank against me
Guide me to peace
Sit silently with me
Show me your loyalty, love, and leaves
Change, fall, fly, die
Come to me in every form, every life, every day
Insight me with unraveling and deceiving beauty
Enlighten me with shade, shadows, and glistening shimmers of light
Swoop swiftly by, summoning strong streams of storms
Sing me a song of safety and sovereignty
