The picture B was from another room I got from a wall. It is vertical from ceiling to the bottom. Again no moisture can be detected in the dark area. The dark column looks like a stud behind the wall, and no such kind of bigger dark area at the bottom.

Edit: I see that David has already responded in detail. As you can see from our responses, we can arrive at different opinions looking at second hand images and partial information. I can guarantee that had either of us been on site, we would have performed adequate secondary assessment to reach a similar conclusion. If I discount the moisture meter comment and go by thermal pattern alone, I would be inclined to think moisture. If it is, my meter would pick it up.

I have the EUFY 2K SECURITY INDOOR CAMERA PAN AND TILT - T8410C24. When I set it up, I accidentally did so as if it were going to be ceiling mounted. So the image is upside down. I have deleted it an re added it choosing the correct orientation- but it is still upside down. I can not find the controls to change this.

The weight of a peaked roof will make it want to spread where it's attached to the walls. Usually either the ceiling joists or horizontal pieces called collar ties resist the spreading motion. From your pictures I can't tell if your joists are serving that function, but if they were it would be a bad idea to cut them.

I'm going to limit my advice to my first post. Walter is right: there are too many things we can't see in the photos. The ceiling joists may serve another function, like providing stability for the beam.

Attached are some additional photos. On the exterior wall, some of the ceiling joists are toe nailed to the top plate and the others attach to the rafter at the top plate. The glulam beam only has these 15 living room ceiling joists mounted on the side with hangers. The other side of the glulam beam has nothing attached because the ceiling joist change direction on the other areas of the house. Not sure if this helps. Thank you!

Abstract:To alleviate the workload in prevailing expert-based onsite inspection, a vision-based method using state-of-the-art deep learning architectures is proposed to automatically detect ceiling damage in large-span structures. The dataset consists of 914 images collected by the Kawaguchi Lab since 1995 with over 7000 learnable damages in the ceilings and is categorized into four typical damage forms (peelings, cracks, distortions, and fall-offs). Twelve detection models are established, trained, and compared by variable hyperparameter analysis. The best performing model reaches a mean average precision (mAP) of 75.28%, which is considerably high for object detection. A comparative study indicates that the model is generally robust to the challenges in ceiling damage detection, including partial occlusion by visual obstructions, the extremely varied aspect ratios, small object detection, and multi-object detection. Another comparative study in the F1 score performance, which combines the precision and recall in to one single metric, shows that the model outperforms the CNN (convolutional neural networks) model using the Saliency-MAP method in our previous research to a remarkable extent. In the case of a large-area ratio with a non-ceiling region, the F1 score of these two models are 0.83 and 0.28, respectively. The Jesuit and Franciscan religious orders built around 280 missions in the state of Chihuahua, many of which have survived to the present day under different states of conservation. In a previous study [4], samples from the polychromy of five of these missions were analyzed by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), Fiber-Optics Reflectance Spectroscopy (FORS) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), leading to the identification of iron-based pigments, copper-based pigments, possibly charcoal and, interestingly, indigo and cochineal.

Over the last years, in situ analysis techniques have become a suitable alternative to conventional laboratory methods.
