The ultimate goal is for the students to make valuable contribution to the social, cultural, and economic development of the Jamaican society.
VISION STATEMENT
We believe:
⮚ Each child is endowed with the capacity to make personal decisions on issues which affect him or her. In
order for the individuals to unleash this potential, the person must develop all aspects of his or her life.
⮚ The Guidance Programme plays an integral role in facilitating the development of children who are self-
aware, self-motivated, self-directed, thus taking charge of their personal growth and development while
aiding in the nurturing and development of others.
⮚ Children are products of their environment and our country’s most valuable resource, thus the guidance
process will assume respect for their personal worth irrespective of class, colour, physical appearance and
mental ability.
⮚ School counselling helps in the development of the attitudes, knowledge, and skills as well as personal
habits that will enable each student to become a productive citizen.
⮚ There is also the need for comprehensive, multifaceted approaches for addressing barriers to learning and
teaching.
⮚ Standards form the heart of school improvement.
ROLE OF THE GUIDANCE COUNSELLOR
Guidance Counsellors play a vital role in fostering student success. They take a proactive approach to student success by implementing programs to prevent problems before they arise (preventive). . They also intervene in existing problems, helping students navigate conflicts or academic challenges. Behind the scenes, counsellors handle administrative tasks to ensure programs run smoothly. Additionally, they act as a support system for the entire guidance program, and continuously develop their own skills to better serve students and staff. In short, guidance counselors are champions for student well-being, helping them navigate the academic, social, and personal challenges of school life.
GUIDANCE COMMITTEE
The Guidance Committee is an important vehicle and may be perceived as a very efficient means of gathering much needed support for the programme. The committee may be seen as a subsystem within the school organization, consisting of representatives of the administrative, teaching and other support staff, working with the counsellor to identify student needs and recommend appropriate responses.
