General Dentistry – DDS vs DMD

Most often when you go to the dentist, you are seeing your general dentist who is either a DDS or a DMD. A dentist with a DDS has earned their Doctor of Dental Surgery degree; one with a DMD earned their Doctor of Medicine in Dentistry or Doctor of Dental Medicine degree.

Definition of dentist

: one who is skilled in and licensed to practice the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases, injuries, and malformations of the teeth, jaws, and mouth and who makes and inserts false teeth.

Dentistry will appeal to those interested in health, problem-solving and hard work as it isn't the easiest of degrees to obtain. Employers will be looking for candidates who can collaborate with other healthcare professionals and hardworking for patients as well as the company.

Becoming a dentist involves at least five years' study at dental school, followed by one or two years of supervised practice. There is intense competition for places at dental schools.
