“RBG”, 2018
Documentary on Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg
Directed and produced by Betsy West and Julie Cohen
Whether you are left, right, or centered, you have to admit RBG is a formidable force in the American society, not just in the legal circle. In fact, she was a force to be reckoned with even before she became a Supreme Court Justice. Now-a-days, RBG looms large as an icon in the country.
Supremely produced, this film documents her upbringing, education, intellect, philosophy, careers, character and personality, as well as her view on life.
The film makes one understand better about the Supreme Court and its justices who, together, exercise more influences than the President to America and its future.
The film also tells how RBG conducts her own daily life and the relationship with her family members in a very interesting, intimate, yet truthful way. Even as a documentary, there is no dull moment.
At the end we get to know a Supreme Court justice up close and well.
“I Know Where I’m Going!” (1945), 91 mins.
Directed and written by Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger
Starred: Roger Livesey, Wendy Hiller
The cinematography itself of this film, in black and white, is a treat to the eyes. It, in particular, brings out the best of Scotland. Its jagged and misty landscape, pristine forest, tranquil seascape turning, from time to time, to foaming surfs, fishing villages, and small towns. The lady, since birth in a middle class family, always knew where she was going--upward mobile. She worked hard, ever obsessively despite twists and turns, toward that goal. Nearing her success, she also learned life changing lesson. A remarkable and enjoyable movie.
The Tales of Hoffmann, 1951
Directed by Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger
If you are an opera buff, this is for you. If you are not, this one may hook you forever from now on. Jacques Offenbach (1819--1880) wrote, but didn’t quite finish, the opera based on 3 short stories of fantasy authored by E.T.A. Hoffmann. Long a favorite of opera enthusiasts, Powell and Pressburger were able to elevate it to a magnificent piece of visual, sonic and sensual delight--with then state of art film technology. More than technology, the artistic vision, ingenuity and rendering of Powell and Emeric made it an everlasting masterpiece.
