When you're involved in a real estate transaction, you typically need answers quickly. A qualified professional using a Continuous Radon Monitor (or a combination of a Continuous Radon Monitor with multiple Electret Ionization Chambers) can provide you with an accurate measurement in as little as 48 hours.
Radon testing for concerned homeowners includes a short-term radon test (typically 4 to 7 days), a full consultation of the results and answers to any questions you may have.
The EPA estimates that 1 in every 15 homes in the US has elevated radon. And living in Northern IL, where we are Zone 1 for radon, that stat is likely higher. It is strongly recommended that homeowners whose property has previously tested high for radon or has an active radon mitigation system re-test every 2 years.
All other homeowners should re-test every 5 years or anytime a home renovation is planned (since home renovations tend to change the path of airflow in your home).
If your home tests high for Radon and you install a mitigation system, your home needs to be re-tested after the system is operational for 24 hours (but not longer than 30 days). This testing is a short-term test (2 to 7 days at homeowners discretion) and includes a full explanation of results.
Due to conflict of interest, the State of Illinois does not allow radon mitigation companies to provide the post-mitigation testing to show the mitigation system is working as designed.
The US EPA strongly recommends that new construction include a Passive Radon Mitigation system and certain states, like Illinois, make it a requirement of builders. However, just because a home has a passive system installed, there is no guarantee that the home is safe. It is strongly recommended that new construction homes be tested for radon within 30 days of the homeowner moving into the building.
Testing for new home construction includes a short-term test (2 to 7 days at homeowners discretion) and a full consultation on the results, including recommendations as required.
