Britannica is the the Web version of the longest-printed encyclopedia in history, from 1768 to 2012. It has now moved all of its resources online, with an integrated dictionary service that you can access by just double-clicking on an unfamiliar word and three levels of reading difficulty on each article.
JURN - Powered by Google Search, JURN allows for free searching of scholarly articles using more natural language. It sifts the Web for free, full-text scholarly works with ad-free and non-commercial results. While some journal articles will appear as previews, you might be able use the JURN search engine to locate an applicable article previews, and then try find that specific article in JSTOR.
History World - With its interactive timelines and historical narratives, History World presents a thorough view of events or political contexts. You won't find any biographies, so search and browse by the revolutionary event/era your figure took part in to find relevant information.
