Chronic Disease Epidemiology Unit is committed to research and education for surveillance and investigation of epidemics in order to provide scientific evidence for disease control and prevention.

Epidemiology, the science of epidemics, is defined as the study of the occurrence and distribution of health-related events, states, and processes in specified populations, including the study of the determinants influencing such processes, and the application of this knowledge to control relevant health problems.

Epidemics arise from long-standing vulnerabilities at the social and individual levels. Epidemiological knowledge is critical for evidence-based interventions to cure the complex socio-ecological chains of spread, and alleviate the burden from the rise of chronic diseases and the threats from emerging infectious diseases.

Students of Chronic Disease Epidemiology Unit will obtain research experience that combines theory and practice by participating in the projects such as health surveys and analyses of health determinants. They will be trained for competency in epidemiological knowledge and skills to contribute to improving population health.

만성병역학 연구실은 유행병의 감시와 원인조사를 통하여 질병관리의 과학적 근거를 제공하는 연구를 수행하고 전문역량을 기르는 것을 목표로 합니다. 역학은 유행병의 과학으로서, 인구집단 내에서 건강관련 상태, 사건, 과정의 발생과 분포를 연구하는 학문이며, 그러한 과정에 영향을 주는 결정요인을 탐구하고 그 지식을 건강문제 통제에 적용하는 분야입니다. 유행병은 사회와 개인의 지속적인 취약성 때문에 생깁니다. 만성병 증가로 인한 부담과 신종감염병의 위협을 줄이려면 유행병이 퍼지는 복잡한 사회생태학적 사슬을 고쳐야 하며, 이를 위해서는 역학적 지식이 꼭 필요합니다.

만성병역학 연구실 참여학생들은 건강조사와 질병위험요인 분석 등의 연구로 이론과 실전을 아우르고, 우리 사회의 건강수준 개선에 기여할 전문인력과 연구자로서 갖추어야 할 역학적 지식과 기술을 익힐 것입니다.
