What is a Donor Advised Fund (DAF)?
A donor advised fund (DAF) is a charitable giving account that allows a donor to make contributions to a fund, receive an immediate tax deduction, and then recommend grants to qualified charities over time. DAFs are often administered through sponsoring 501(c)3 organizations like Fidelity Charitable, Schwab Charitable, or Vanguard Charitable.
How are the benefits of using a DAF?
A DAF changes the process of giving in several beneficial ways:
Allows you to contribute non-cash assets: Most DAFs DAFs cash, stocks, mutual funds, or even cryptocurrency.
Donate once, give many times: Instead of having to arrange separate stock or crypto transfers to multiple charities, you make a single transfer of assets to your DAF. The DAF's sponsoring organization handles the complexities of selling the assets.
Simplified record-keeping: You get one consolidated tax receipt from the DAF for your donation. You don't have to collect separate receipts from every charity you support throughout the year.
Decouple your tax deduction from your granting: This is perhaps the biggest advantage. You get the full tax deduction in the year you fund the DAF. However, you can take your time—months or even years—to decide which specific charities to support.
How do I give to the CDC Mutual Aid Fund through a DAF?
Contact your DAF to recommend a grant to the CDC Mutual Aid Fund. Because the CDC Mutual Aid Fund is administered through our 501(c)3 fiscal sponsor, the Family Support Center, all checks must be made out to “Family Support Center” or “Family Support Center, Inc.” with “CDC Mutual Aid Fund” listed in the memo line.
