Garden Design Challenge

Challenge: Work with a partner to design a raised-bed garden to grow various types of plants. Focus on the importance of soil and how soil affects plant growth. Be sure to read the entire assignment before you begin.

Question: Why is the composition of soil important when growing plants? Become an expert on sand, clay, and humus. Determine how you will use each type of soil in your garden.

Tasks:

  1. Complete the graphic organizers about soil below before you design your garden.
  2. Create a Google document for your soil data.
  3. Be sure to share your Google document with your partner and me.
  4. Divide the work equally.
  5. Use Epic Books or KidRex to research soil. These keywords will help: sand, clay, humus, garden.
  6. Organize your research.
  7. Be sure to ask open-ended questions and use lots of adjectives in your notes.
  8. Write a paragraph about your solution.
  9. Add plants to your garden and design it.

Project: Once you have decided how to use soil in your garden, choose at least 5 plants to add to your garden. How far apart will you place them? How will you determine how far apart to plant them? What will your garden look like? Use Google Drawings to demonstrate your findings.

Presentation: Be prepared to present your findings to the operation's manager of our Local Farmer's Market. You'll also have the opportunity to ask questions.
