Whilst Apple has stuck to the classic 4:3 ratio (4032x3024 pixels), I have preferred 16:9 on my latest Android phones, Nexus 5 (3264x1836 pixels) and One Plus5 (4608x2592), especially for landscapes and for viewing on most phones, laptops & TVs. The1+5 also offers 4:3 (4608x3456) & square (3456x3456), which avoid the darkened section of the view when taking 16:9 photos.
I have decided to try taking square shots to try for a fresh view of gardens & when revisiting holiday places. This has the benefit of not needing to rotate the device when viewing portrait layouts. I am aiming for more close-up, focused or quirky shots. My first attempts on 14 April 2018 are promising, with the following observations:
be careful what you focus on in close-ups, as the surrounding area is a bit blurred, which may or may not be a desirable effect;
shots from unusual angles can be more interesting; head-on individual flowers can be stunning;
quirky subjects (like Sammy the snail) are often more interesting
I intend to try angled views including 45 degrees, and different lighting.
It does not appear to matter whether you take square photos on 1+5 vertical or horizontal, even though the orientation is undefined, they appear the right way round on other devices.
I am also experimenting with cropping existing 16:9 photos to square in Picasa (Windows10), defaulting to 2592x2592 pixels. I'm trying to avoid further cropping, to avoid pixellation.
I have selected some 2017 photos, 2018 UK photos for this, and 2018-02 Costa Rica (Flora & Fauna).
I upload these to Google Photos (cjcpc@outlook.com) from my PC (not from within Picasa, which no longer works), and name and share the album. Remember to upload photos not albums if you crop or modify any photos, to avoid uploading the originals as well.
