Abstract
In the age of digital transformation, a digital twin as a key technology has been applied throughout industry and society in recent years. Especially, an urban digital twin, as a next-generation technology to promote a smart city, has been being actively researched and developed over the world. The urban digital twin fundamentally requires a vast number of data, which involve all information corresponding city’s physical assets.
In general, a city may be composed of many macroscale urban areas such as business, shopping, and school districts. Each district also consists of a large number of microscale urban areas. Due to high costs in constructing network infrastructure, macroscale urban sensing, which senses data for physical assets only at a few spots in a district, has been the predominant sensing method for designing a smart city. However, microscale urban sensing, which may collect digital data at many spots in a district, seems inevitable for envisioning a true urban digital twin.
Today there are a tremendous number of mobile devices in a district, and this may provide a good way of collecting digital data from many pervasive sensors in a district without the extra network infrastructure. Namely, such mobile devices can be the role of data acquisition from their nearby sensors. This dissertation proposes two microscale urban sensing methods with cost-effectiveness and high reliability by using mobile devices. For these sensing methods, the actual field experiments have been carried out and show that both methods can be taken into consideration as effective solutions for future microscale urban sensing.
