Mr. and Mrs. Karl Sabler observed their 50th wedding anniversary Wednesday, March 11, 1970.

A private dinner was held at the Colby Hotel on Saturday 3vening, where they two daughters, Dorothy and Selena, and their husband, Merlin Schjoneman and Elroy Schade. Helped them celebrate.

A corsage and boutonniere of gold chrysanthemums and carnations, each with an appropriate denomination commemorating the occasion, were presented to the honored couple.

Grandchildren attending were Deborah, Pamela and Michael Schade, Mr. and Mrs. Allen Schjoneman, Mr. and Mrs. Richard Seefluth and Karen and Kirk Schjoneman.

Great-grandchildren included Marty, Scott and Kim Schjoneman, and Jeffrey and Ryan Seefluth.

Other guests included Dennis Miller and Marilyn Schmidt.

"Charlie" and Minnie are both in good health and wish to thank all who gave them gifts and sent cards for the occasion.

Mr. and Mrs. Otto Sachs, Greenwood (Clark Co., Wis.), were guests of honor at a 1 o'clock dinner at the Midway Bar at Withee, Sunday afternoon, in observance of their Silver Wedding Anniversary, which was February 24, 1970. Many beautiful gifts and cards of congratulations were received.

There were 105 guests present. Music was furnished by Lenny Galarowicz and Mel Lorenze.

Guests were present from Milwaukee, Chippewa Falls, Spencer, Owen, Withee, Greenwood, Waukesha, Eau Claire, Thorp and Lublin.

Mr. and Mrs. Sachs were married February 24, 1945 at St. John's Parsonage in Withee, with Rev. W. Schedler performed the ceremony.

They are parents of 2 children, Warren and Norene, both at home.

Mr. and Mrs. William Sachse, Colby, celebrated their golden wedding anniversary on Sunday, June 22, 1975 at the VFW Hall, Colby.

The former Lena Kowalk, daughter of William and Bertha Kowalk, was born July 30, 1901, in the Town of Colby.

Mr. Sachse, the son of Louis and Rosa Sachse, was born August 17, 1901 in Sheboygan County. In 1908 the family moved to the Town of Hull on a farm.

Mr. and Mrs. Sachse were married June 22, 1925 at the Colby Zion Lutheran Church Colby, by Rev. A. Kirchhoefer. They have one daughter, Mrs. Otis (Arlyle) Kath, four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

They lived at the family farm until moving to Colby in June 1974.

Members of the couple original wedding party, Mrs. Floyd Eder, Otto Kowalk and Mr. and Mrs. Emil Wolk attended the celebration, along with 125 friends and relatives.

A program was presented by Pastor Steven Hasenstein and five year old Tod Kath san “Jesus in the Morning.”

Mrs. Sachse sore a corsage of yellow roses and Mrs. Sachse had a yellow rose boutonniere. A three tiered wedding cake decorated the table.

People attended from Spencer, Colby, Loyal, Unity, Clarkston, Washington, Abbotsford, Plymouth, Marshfield, Ridgeland, Barron, Owen, North Fond du Lac, Menomonie, Wisconsin Rapids, Turtle Lake, Sheboygan, Newton, Kiel, New Holstein, Oshkosh, Reedsville and Phoenix, Arizona. 

Sanger, Ernest Mr. and Mrs. (27 Oct 1915 – 25 June 1966)

Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Sanger, Loyal, celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary, Saturday, June 25 at the Star Lodge Motel. A dinner was served to 118 guests and a social evening was spent at their home on route 1, Loyal, Bells, streamers, and gold–tone flowers added to the decorations for the reception and supper which was held from 2 to 4 p.m.

Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Sanger were married October 27, 1915. On Sunday, Oct. 24, of last year, the couple celebrated their anniversary at their home with family members. One of their sons, Major Lawrence Sanger, who was serving as a chaplain in Thailand at the time, was not able to be present so a second celebration was planned. Major Sanger and his family were present at this time from Fort Ord, California.

Other family members present were Elmer of Rockford, Illinois; Mrs. Alvin (Evelyn) Roehl, Chili; and Mr. and Mrs. Norman (Mildred) Faber, Granton. There are 10 grandchildren. The anniversary couple had as their original wedding attendants, Mr. and Mrs. Edward Kleinschmidt, Granton, the later a sister of the bridal Mrs. Ruth Lindow, Milwaukee; and Bonnie Garbusch, Granton, both cousins of the groom. All were able to be present Saturday.

Other guests attending the event came from Rockford,Illinois; Stillman Valley, Milwaukee, Valders, Collins, Spencer, Unity, Granton, Chilir and Loyal.

Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Sauer were surprised by a group of friends and relatives who arrived at their home Wednesday evening, October 20, 1965, to help the couple celebrate their twentieth wedding anniversary. The surprise guests included Herbert’s mother, Mrs. Catherine Sauer, Medford, and Mrs. Hebert Sauer’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Loos, Colby, Mr. and Mrs. Louis Resech Jr., and Mr. and Mrs. Joe Sauer, Medford, Mr. and Mrs. Al Guth, Dorchester, Mr. and Mrs. Leo Underwood and son, Leon, Marshfield, and Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Underwood and Sharon, Abbotsford.

The lunch, which was provided by the guests, was served after an evening of visiting.

Mr. and Mrs. Herb Sauer of route 2, Colby (Clark Co., Wis.), celebrated their Silver Wedding Anniversary Saturday evening, October 31, 1970, with a dinner at the Redwood Club at Unity.

The honored couple was presented with flowers. Hers was a corsage of red and white carnations, and his a white carnation boutonniere. Both were edged with silver leaves.

The centerpiece was an appropriately decorated cake and a blue Viking candleholder with a silver candle, which was a gift from their son, Roger.

Attending were members of their family, Mr. and Mrs. Nick (Eunice) Kleparski of Unity, Clifford of Wausau, and Roger, at home. They had one other child, Walter, who is deceased.

There is also a grandchild, five and one-half month old Michelle Dee Ann Kleparski.

Also present were Mr. and Mrs. Al Guth of Dorchester. Mrs. Guth was one of the attendants at their wedding. Other members of the wedding party were Mrs. Dominic Zicco of McHenry, Illinois, and Al Sauer of Milwaukee, who were unable to attend.

Mrs. Sauer's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Loos of Colby, were also among the dinner guests.

Later, they gathered with other friends and relatives for an evening of dancing and socializing at the Dorchester Memorial Hall.

A highlight of the evening was a mock wedding performed for them and other guests by relatives of Mr. Sauer, and a friend.

Miss Karen Guth, a niece of Ms. Sauer, circulated the guest book.

Guests attending were from Chicago and Woodstock, Illinois, and Wauwatosa, Waukesha, Cudahy, Marathon, Wausau, Auburndale, Marshfield, Stratford, Medford, Milan, Dorchester, Spencer, Unity, Abbotsford, Colby, and surrounding areas.

Mr. and Mrs. Sauer were married October 20, 1945, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Colby, before Father N.B. Betchta. On Sunday, October 24, they renewed their marriage vows at the same church, after mass, with Father Francis Rushman officiating.

Both Mr. and Mrs. Sauer are employed at the Harmony Cooperative at Colby. He is a dairy equipment salesman, and she works in the hardware department.

Leon and Pat Sazama of Colby celebrated their golden wedding anniversary with a surprise party given by their children on Aug. 31, 2008, at Country Aire, Stratford.

They were married Aug. 30, 1958, at St. Patrick’s Church in Halder.

Leon was born Feb. 16, 1937, and attended school in Colby and the town of Frankfort.

The former Pat McHugh was born May 19, 1940, and attended school in Halder and Mosinee.

Leon retired in 2000 and Pat retired in 2005.

They have four children, Darnell (Doreen) Sazama, Darrell (friend Lori) Sazama, Darla (Mark) Viegut and Dorine (Mike) Geiger; and eight grandchildren.

Surrounded by their three children and other relatives who made a surprise visit upon them, Mr. and Mrs. William Schaefer, 154 North Grand Avenue, celebrated their golden wedding anniversary Sunday. William Schaefer was born in Plymouth, Wis., Nov. 1m, 1860 and Mrs. Schaefer at Sheboygan, Jan. 22 1866. They were married at Sheboygan, Dec. 4, 1884 at Trinity church by Rev. Mr. Herzer. They lived on a farm near Glenbeulah until 1910 they moved to a farm near Neillsville where they lived until 1924 when they sold out and moved to their present address in this city.

Their children are Henry Schaefer, and Mrs. Bruno Stange, Plymouth, and Edwin Schaefer of Chetek. There are seven grandchildren. Others who were here for the event are Mr. and Mrs. Tom Johnson and sons, Harold, Waldo; Mr. and Mrs. William Hoth, Sheboygan; and George Schaefer, Plymouth.

Schauer, Mr. / Mrs. Oscar (40th – 25 NOV 1965) & (Gold – 1975)

The 40th wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Schauer of route 1, Abbotsford, occurred on Thanksgiving Day.

The occasion was celebrated at supper at the Rainbow Club, at which they were joined by their children and grandchildren. They are Mr. and Mrs. Willard Schauer and family, Mr. and Mrs. Donald Schauer and family, Mr. and Mrs. Arvin Gosse and family, and Mr. and Mrs. Dick Bunkelman, all of the Abbotsford area.

The Schauers have farmed in the town of Holton (Marathon Co.) for the past 25 years.

Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Schauer, Route 1, Abbotsford, celebrated their golden wedding anniversary November 9, 1975 with a church service at Christ Lutheran Church.

Two vases of yellow and bronze mums were place on the altar by their children.

A family gathering with a dinner followed the services at the Colby Hotel. A three tier decorated wedding cake centered the table. The cake was a gift from the grandchildren.

Mr. and Mrs. Schauer were married November 25, 1925 at the Lutheran parsonage in Medford.

They farmed until five years ago.

The Schauer’s have four children and twelve grandchildren.

A dinner was served to 94 members of the immediate family of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Scheel Sr., Sunday, June 26 at K Corners in honor of their Golden Anniversary. Mr. and Mrs. Scheel were married June 28, 1916 at Milladore.

The couple have lived on the same farm all their married life in the town of Beaver, where Mr. Scheel still farms.

They are parents of six sons who are Ralph Jr., Neillsville; Arthur, Greenwood; Walter, Murray, Gary, and Wayne, Waukesha; three daughters, Mrs. Dennis (Naomi) Colby, Loyal; Mrs. Lester (Norma) Framton, Lombard, Illinois: and Mrs. Arthur (Joyce) Prior, Mundelein, Illinois. One daughter, Mrs. Fritz (Elizabeth) Boyette died in May of 1960. They have 56 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. This was the first time in 17 years that the whole family was gathered together at one time.

One of the original attendants, a sister of Mrs. Scheel, Miss Elfreida Thomas, Miladore was present. The other attendant, Frank Scheel, who resides in Tennessee was not able to attend.

Three nephews who are priests celebrated a solemn high mass at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church at Fairview, near Humbird, in observance of the golden wedding anniversary September 2, of Mr. and Mrs. Frank J. Scheffer, old-time Town of Mentor residents. 
 

A dinner was served to 60 guests, and a reception was held at the farm home for relatives and friends from 3 to 5 p.m.
 

The Scheffers were married September 3, 1907, in Rice Lake, and have made their home on the Town of Mentor farm since that time.  The fourth generation of the family is now living on the farm.  Mr. Scheffer is 78 years old; Mrs. Scheffer is 72.
 

Eight children were born to them; seven of whom still are living.  They were: Anthony of Prescott, Ariz.; Bernard of Humbird; Robert of Prairie du Chien; Walter of Norman, Okla.; Marian Monnat of Milwaukee; Collette, who died in infancy; Anita Durst of Sauk City; and Francis, Clintonville.  There are 25 grandchildren.

An unusual anniversary was celebrated last Sunday morning at the 8 o’clock Mass at St. Anthony’s Church.

Two couples celebrated their Silver wedding anniversary together at the service both having been married 25 years ago January 7th in a double wedding ceremony in Loyal.

The couples honored were Mr. and Mrs. Max Langfeldt and Mr. and Mrs. George Schellinger.

On Sunday evening, relatives and friends helped celebrate the event with a party at the Langfeldt home, lunch was served and games played.  Mr. and Mrs. Langfeldt received many cards and gifts.  Among the guests were their daughters Joan and Lois of Stevens Point, and their son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Norman Polasek of Wild Rose, who were here for the weekend.

The Schellingers observed the event with a party with friends of theirs, having to postpone a family celebration until their children are able to come home.  A son, Dick, who is in the army, is expected home soon.  Their daughter Jane was in the hospital and another daughter in Milwaukee was unable to come.

Mr. and Mrs. George Scherer celebrated their 35th wedding anniversary on Saturday by attending the mass that evening at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with members of their family and later festivities at their home in Greenwood.

George Scherer and Carol Asplin were married June 13, 1936, in Neillsville. They have four children, Mrs. Ervin (Nancy) Sankey of Milwaukee, Richard of Greenwood, and Roger and Miss Sue Scherer of Eau Claire.

In honor of their 50th wedding anniversary Mr. and Mrs. Peter Scherr of Greenwood entertained relatives and a few friends Sunday, May 19. An anniversary dinner for 30 people was served at noon, and a buffet supper was served at the Scherr home at 4 p.m.

Mr. and Mrs. Scherr wore a corsage and boutonniere of yellow roses. Vases of cut flowers adorned the home.

Peter Scherr and Josephine Falkner were married in the Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Lima May 20, 1913, by the Rev. Martin Capper.

Mr. Scherr, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Scherr, was born May 24, 1877, in Marshfield.  He received his education in Marshfield and Chicago.  Before his marriage he was employed at Conner’s in Stratford, and worked on the Soo Line and Northwestern railroads.  He did cement work here for 20 years.  His hobbies are fishing and deer hunting.

Mrs. Scherr, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Falkner, was born January 27, 1894, in Lima, where she received her education. Her hobbies are fancy work and sewing. Both are in fair health.

After their marriage the couple came to Greenwood and has resided here ever since.  Two of the wedding attendants of 50 years ago were present for the celebration, Mrs. Scherr’s brother, Wesley Falkner of Plum City, and a friend, Mrs. Joseph Bauer of Lima.

The Scherr’s have a son, Martin Scherr, and a daughter, Mrs. Florian (Marcella) Herrick; who, with their families were present. They have four granddaughters, Mrs. Rometta Goetsch, Margaret Scherr and Donna and Patricia Herrick, and a great-granddaughter, Lori Goetsch.

Mr. and Mrs. Peter Scherr, 606 Main St., Greenwood (Clark Co., Wis.), celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary Sunday, May 20, 1973, in the residence which has been their home since they were married. Twenty-five relatives joined them for a noon luncheon and mid-afternoon anniversary dinner there.

Peter Scherr, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Scherr, and Joseph Falkner, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Falkner, were married May 20, 1913 in Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Lima, Richland County, Wisconsin, by Rev. Martin Capper, with Wesley Falkner, Plum City, and Mrs. Joseph Bauer, Durand, attendants.

Peter Scherr was born May 24, 1887, in Marshfield, where he received his early education, completing it in Chicago, Illinois. He worked for Connor Lumber Company in Stratford and for the Soo Line and Northwester Railroads before he married.

In Greenwood, Mr. Scherr operated a cement and concrete business for 20 years, after several years with the city, and also was section foreman for the Fairchild and Northwester Railroad. His hobbies in earlier years were hiking, fishing, and hunting, especially deer hunting.

Mrs. Scherr was born January 27, 1894, in Lima, Richland County, where she received her education. She has been active in sewing and fancy work, in addition to her housework.

The Scherrs are active members of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Greenwood. Mrs. Scherr is also a member of St. Anne's Society, and her husband, the National Catholic Society of Foresters.

The couple has a son, Martin Scherr, Wausau; a daughter, Mrs. Florian (Marcella) Herrick, Colby; four grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Relatives coming from a distance included Mr. and Mrs. Ronnie Goetsch and family, Wausau; Mr. and Mrs. James Schoff and family, Edina, Minn.; Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Ohlinger and family, Ladysmith, and Mr. and Mrs. Duwayne Towle and Shannon of Unity.

The Scherrs have enjoyed good health during their lifetime.

Schillers Observe 60th Anniversary

Four Generations at Celebrations; 45 years in Home

Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Schiller, Clark County residents for the past 52 years, celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary Sunday at their home on North Grand Avenue. They were married at Fond du Lac Feb. 6, 1877.

A large gathering of friends and relatives assembled at the home to commemorate the occasion, dinner being served at noon.

Among those present were Mr. and Mrs. T. E. Schiller and daughters, Frances and Dora, Greenwood; Mr. and Mrs. William Betz, town of Seif; Mr. and Mrs. Paul Spaete and son Bobbie, and daughter Beverly, Granton; Mrs. E. A. Wolff, Lindsay, Mont.

Mrs. Francis Preston and daughters, Jean, Gail and Catherine, Mrs. W. F. Schiller and sons, Robert, Joe and Billy, and Mr. and Mrs. R. H. Welsch, all of Neillsville; Miss Mildred Schiller, Madison; and Miss Meta Lee Sloup of Milwaukee.

Mr. and Mrs. Schiller have resided at their present home for the past 45 years. Both were born in Fond du Lac County, where they were married Feb. 6, 1877. Mrs. Schiller is 81 years old, having been born on May 28, 1885, and Mr. Schiller, born on Christmas day, 1851, is 85 years old.

Eight years after their marriage Mr. and Mrs. Schiller came to Neillsville where his first employment was with the John Hein Lumber Company in the Towns of Seif and York.

They have six living children: Mrs. E. A. (Anna) Wolf, Lindsay, Mont; Mrs. William (Della) Betz, town of Seif; Mrs. Francis Preston, Neillsville; Anthony Schiller, Greenwood; Miss Mildred Schiller, Madison; and Mrs. T. (Margaret) Christofferson, Scottsbluff, Neb.

They also have 20 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, Bobby and Beverly Spaete, Granton.

Sixty-three years of married life were marked Monday by Mr. and Mrs. Jake Schiller, Clark County residents for the last 47 years, at their residence on South Grand Ave., Neillsville. Mr. Schiller is 84 and Mrs. Schiller is 80.

Many friends and relatives of the grand old couple dropped in on them during the day and early evening to pay their respects and to wish them many more happy years together.

Mr. and Mrs. Schiller, the former Margaret Litzen, were married Feb. 6, 1876, in St. Joseph, Fond du Lac County. Theirs was a long period of courtship, which started when they were children. As both of them will relate: "We grew up together." And their years together have always been happy ones, they agree.

For some time preceding their marriage, Mr. Schiller was employed by Mrs. Schiller's father in the town of Marshfield, Fond du Lac County. But soon after their marriage, they moved to Marion County, where Mr. Schiller planned to settle down to arming.

However, life on a farm did not last long, and in 1892 they moved to Clark County. Mr. Schiller, an old time logger, started working for John Hein, well known lumberman of this section during that time, and the first house in which they lived in the county was a log cabin near the sawmill, located on Wedges Creek.

A few years later the mill was moved to the town of York, and Mr. and Mrs. Schiller went along with it. Mr. Schiller was a valued employee of Mr. Hein, and frequently was sent out in search of new timberlands. His searches carried him into many parts of Wisconsin, and on one occasion, into Michigan.

For 14 years Mr. Schiller remained with the Hein interests, then he moved into Neillsville and for several years was employed in the city water department.

The advice Mr. and Mrs. Schiller would give to any young couple seeking to learn the secret of a long and happy married life is: "Learn to give and take."

Seven children were born to the union. They are Mrs. Wm. Betz of the town of Seif; Mrs. Ed Wolf of Glendive, Mont.; Tony Schiller of Greenwood; Mrs. Frances Preston, at home; W.F. Schiller, deceased; Miss Mildred Schiller, a teacher in the Madison public schools; and Mrs. Thorvald Christopherson of Juneau. There are 20 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. Mr. and Mrs. Schilling of the town of Frankfort observed their golden wedding anniversary Monday, July 5. The celebration started in the morning with high mass celebrated in St. Mary’s Catholic church in Colby, the Rev. N. B. Beschta officiating.

Two of their little granddaughters, Mary Catherine and Patricia Fahy, dressed in yellow and blue taffeta formals, respectively, carried bouquets of yellow flowers, and preceded them down the aisle of the church. Dinner and supper were served to relatives and friends at St. Mary’s gym, and in the evening a dance was held at Cherokee Hall with music by the Little Bohemian Band of Edgar.

Mr. and Mrs. Schilling were married at St. Andrew’s Catholic church at Rozellville July 7, 1898, and have lived in that community until about eight years ago, when they moved to a farm east of Colby, Wisconsin. Mrs. Schilling, the former Catherine Boland, was born Feb. 28. 1880, in New York City and came to this vicinity at the age of five.

Mr. Schilling was born June 1, 1873, at Fox Lake, and also moved to this vicinity at the age of five. Mrs. Schilling’s mother, Mrs. Elizabeth Boland, who is 92 years old, had made her home with them for the past 20 years, since the death of her husband, and has lived to celebrate the golden wedding anniversary of her daughter.

The Schillings have eight children, William Schilling, Stratford; Mrs. Walter (Adeline) Siegel, Watertown; Vernon Schilling, Milwaukee; Miss Leone Schilling, Chicago; Miss Aurelia Schilling, Milwaukee; Mrs. Thomas (Dorothy) Fahy and Sister M. Ervin (Marie), Chicago; and Karl Schilling, at home.

Paul and Lois Schippel, formerly of rural Neillsville and now of Centralis, Illinois, were honored June 2 for their 25th wedding anniversary.

Paul, a United Church of Chris minister, was associated with Sunburst Youth Homes in Neillsville.

The couple have four children. Mark is a student at Lakeland College at Sheboygan. Tim is with the U.S. Army at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. Their fourth child, Dawn, and her husband Mike reside in Centralia.

Attending the celebration were the honored couple’s mothers, Mary Frnaces Leonard of West Plaines, Missouri, and Evelyn Schippel of Chicago.

The couple was married in June 6, 1959, University City, Missouri, ceremonies.

News has been scarce for the past month.  The only social events of any consequence were the celebration of Mr. and Mrs. A. Schlender’s 25th wedding anniversary, which was duly celebrated by a host of friends June 26th, a dancing party at Theo. Barnholt’s last week, a housewarming party given by W. Meyer and Paul Briggs in honor of the opening of headquarters of the Lake States Land Co., and a surprise party and dance last Saturday at the residence of Adam Rice in commemoration of Mrs. Rice’s (I shan’t state her age) birthday.

Among the visitors from out of town we note the following: T.V. Beckworth, Pres. of G.H. Purden, Sales Mgr. for the Lake States Land Co., who are making things hum in this

Out of town relatives included Mr. and Mrs. Arno Guk of Marshfield; Mrs. Emma Stark and James Stark of Ludington; Herman Paff and Mrs. Loretta Schwaner of Chippewa Falls; Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Kolden of Augusta.

All members of their family attended, including grandchildren, except a grandson, Allen Montgomery, Jr., and his family, who are living in Wichita, Kans., where Mr. Montgomery is stationed with the armed forces.

A golden wedding celebration was held at Zion Lutheran Church on Sunday honoring Mr. and Mrs. Albert Schlinsog, Granton who were married on November 12, 1914 by the Rev. Martin Hasz at Zion., Mapleworks Church. The couple has spent all of their married life together on the farm south of Granton where they live now since retirement.

Mrs. Schlinsog, the former Martha Schaller was born May 21, 1892 at Boyd. Her parents were Mr. and Mrs. George Schaller, who later moved to a farm in the town of Grant. Mr. Schlinsog was born on October 11, 1886, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Adolph Schlinsog on the same farm where they now reside.

A dinner was served to forty relatives and friends with open house from 2 – 4 in the afternoon. Coming from out of town for the dinner were Mr. and Mrs. Robert Strey, Loyal; Mr. and Mrs. Wilbur Schlinsog, Marshfield; Darwin Schlinsog, Madison; and Mr. and Mrs. David Richter, Park Falls. Their children are (Lydia) Mrs. Allan Montgomery and Paul Schlinsog, both of grant; Mr. and Mrs. Allan Montgomery and family, Coleen, Connie, Gayle and bret and Mr. and Mrs. Paul Schlinsog and son Darwin were all present. A grandson Allan Jr. and family were unable to attend.

Flowers for the altar were given by the Montgomery family and the corsage and flower worn by Mr. and Mrs. Schlinsog was a gift from their grandson Darwin.

Mr. and Mrs. Edward Schlinsog of Chili observed their golden wedding anniversary October 27. An anniversary supper hosted by their children was served at 5 p.m. at the Downtowner in Marshfield.

Lillie Lindow, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Louis Lindow, and Edward Schlinsog, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Herman Schlinsog, were married November 1, 1923, at Auburndale. They have lived in the Chili-Granton area throughout their married lives.

The couple’s attendants, Mrs. Violet Jone of Oshkosh, sister of the groom and Ed Lindow of Chili, brother of the bride, were both present for the observance.

Also in attendance were the Schlinsogs’ three children and their spouses: Mr. and Mrs. Clarence (Norene Schlinsog) McHone of Darien, Mr. and Mrs. Claire Schlinsog of Kenosha and Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Schlinsog of Milton.

Eight of the ten grandchildren were able to be present for the event. There are four great-grandchildren as well. They included the Claire Schlinsogs’ sons, Dale and Jerry; the Ronald Schlinsogs’ daughters, Vicky, Diane and Lana; and the McHones’ son, Clarence, Jr., their daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Brody and children of Darien, and another daughter, Mrs. Richard Nystrum and children of Wisconsin Rapids.

Unable to be present were the Claire Schlinsogs’ daughter, Sally, Mrs. Bennie Skelton, presently in Germany where her husband is stationed with the U. S. Army, and the Schlinsog’s son, Jack.

Others at the observance were Mrs. Ed Lindow of Chili, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Schlinsog and Mr. and Mrs. George Rowley of Loyal and Walter Schlinsog of Granton.

Following the supper, a social evening was spent at the Schlinsog home.

About 45 relatives and friends gathered at the Ernest Schmelzer home Sunday afternoon to help Mr. and Mrs. Julius Schmelzer celebrate their golden wedding anniversary. A wedding supper was served at 4:00 o’clock. They were the recipients of many lovely gifts.

Mrs. Schmelzer was born in East Prusssia, Germany on July 16, 1875, and Mrs. Schmelzer, whose maiden name was Auguste Lenk, was born on December 15, 1877, also in East Prussia, Germany. They were married in Westfalen, Germany, on February 10, 1900. They came to the United States in January, 1927, coming directly to this community. They are both active and live with their son, Ernest Schmelzer, and family.

They have two children, Fred C. Schmelzer of Colby, Rt. 2, and Ernest Schmelzer of Colby, Rt. 1. They have five grand children.

Mr. and Mrs. August Schmidt, who live about 6 miles northwest of town (Dorchester, Clark County, Wis.), celebrated their golden wedding on Thursday, Mar 31st, 1927, with their children, grandchildren, relatives, and friends about them. They had a very pleasant day visiting and feasting and at 1 o'clock they renewed their marriage vows, Rev. Bizer officiating and Mr. and Mrs. Gust Genrich acted as witnesses. The bride was dressed in a lovely brown dress trimmed with old gold lace and wore an old gold scarf about her shoulders, which made her a very beautiful bride, indeed.

Dorchester is very fortunate in having had a good many golden weddings and we are proud of the fact. Fifty years together, and during that time interwoven was joy, sorrow, pain, perhaps some hardships, and much happiness, and as we look back the joy overshadows the sorrow we knew God is good.

This worthy couple is fortunate in having their children living near them so that they can see and enjoy their company often.

The guests enjoyed with the bridal party a very fine dinner at six and the evening was spent visiting. At midnight another delicious meal put in appearance shortly after which, the guests departed for their homes hoping to help Mr. and Mrs. Schmidt celebrate their diamond wedding.

Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Schmidt, Route 2, Loyal, celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary on November 17, 1979 at the 8 p.m. Mass at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, Loyal. A dance, reception and lunch were held from 9 – 1 at the Loyal American Legion Club.

Bernard Schmidt and Betty Jordan were married on Tuesday, November 16, 1954 at 10:30 a.m. at Holy Family Catholic Church in Willard.

Betty attended Willard State Grade School and Greenwood Nigh School. She is a housewife and a C.C.D. teacher on Saturdays at St. Anthony’s Church. She is a member of Starlite Homemakers, the American Legion Auxiliary, St. Anthony’s Catholic Church and St. Anthony’s Altar Society.

Bernard attended Pleasant View School and is employed in farming. He is also a part time carpenter. He is a member of the Loyal American Legion, the Knights of Columbus and St. Anthony’s Catholic Church and its men’s club. He enjoys bowling, fishing and playing cards.

The Schmidt’s have 13 children; Mrs. Charles (Brenda) Rueth of Route 1, Loyal, Mrs. Randy (Barbara) Horn of Greenwood, Mrs. Jim (Bernadette) Pachmak of New Ulm, Germany, who came all the say just for this special event, Bonnie of Neillsville and Beverly, Betty Jean, Bernice, Bruce, Becky, Brian, Bradley, Bridgett and Benjamin at home.

The Schmidt’s also have five grandchildren.

Mr. and Mrs. Fred J. Schmidt, 2521 Sacmann Ave., Sheboygan, observed their golden wedding anniversary with a family dinner at the Hoffman's at Riverdale on Sunday afternoon.

Two daughters present at the celebration are Mrs. Arnold (Rachael) Mortensen and Mrs. Donald (Adeline) Bratz, both of Sheboygan. William Schmidt, Enumclaw, Wash., a son, was unable to attend.

Out of town guests were Mr. and Mrs. Walter Trester and family, Kansas City, Mo. Mrs. Trester is a granddaughter of the celebrants, who have 13 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.

Mass and blessing at 9 a.m. Sunday at St. Dominic Catholic Church marked the golden event. Two surviving attendants present were Mrs. Anna Meske, Thorp and Mrs. Phoena Jacob, Kohler. The couple's marriage took place on November 11, 1919, at Thorp (Clark Co., Wis.), and the service was performed by the late Rev. John Neises.

Former Matilda Oberle, born September 8, 1899, in Thorp, is the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. William Oberle. Mr. Schmidt's parents, now deceased, were Mr. and Mrs. Christ Schmidt, and his birth occurred March 20, 1893, in Sheboygan.

Both Mr. and Mrs. Schmidt are members of Barracks and Auxiliary of Veterans of World War I, 2091, Sheboygan, and American Legion and Auxiliary of Thorp. He belongs to Holy Name Society of St. Dominic's and she is affiliated with its Christian Mothers Society and with Ladies of the G.A.R.

Traveling and card playing are special interests of the honorees.

A high mass was sung by Rev. Bernard T. Kelly at 9 o’clock service in St. Mary’s Church in honor of the 25th wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Schmidt of Neillsville.

In the afternoon and evening they entertained in their home. Lunch and refreshments were served and guests enjoyed dancing and playing cards. The Schmidts receive many gifts and a purse of money.

Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Schmidt held a 33rd wedding anniversary party at their home in Neillsville Saturday evening. Mr. and Mrs. John Schmidt, Loyal, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on Sunday, October 8. The day began with attending 10 o’clock Mass at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in a group. Open house was held from 2 to 5 p.m. at the church hall.

Mrs. Schmidt donned a crescent shaped corsage of bronze and gold mums.

The honored couple were married on October 9, 1917 by the Rev. Peter Weber.

Mr. Schmidt was born on July 21, 1894, in the town of York, Clark County to Joseph and Mary Schmidt. He served with the U. S. Army during World War 1 Mr. Schmidt farmed and did mason work. The couple farmed until 1956 when they retired and moved to the city of Loyal. He now confined to a wheel chair.

Mrs. Schmidt is the former Christine Hauser. She was born on July 3, 1895 in Dane County to John and Anna Hauser. She received her education at Richfield in Wood County. Before her marriage she lived in Christie. Her hobbies include gardening and playing cards. She enjoys fair health.

The anniversary couple have ten children who are: Joseph, Mrs. Clarence (Sally) Becker and Verland, Neillsville, Paul, Person, Robert and Tony, Milton Junction; George, Janesville, Henry, Mrs. Eddie (Florence) Rueth and Bernard, Loyal; 67 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren.

The Emerald (55th) anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. John Schmidt, Loyal (Clark Co., Wis.), was celebrated at their home on Sunday, October 1, 1972, with an open house.

Nine of the couple's ten children were able to attend. They were Mr. and Mrs. George Schmidt, Janesville; Mr. and Mrs. Robert Schmidt and family, and Mr. and Mrs. Tony Schmidt and family, Milton Junction; Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Smith and family, Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Becker and family, and Mr. and Mrs. Verland Schmidt, Neillsville; and Mr. and Mrs. Eddie Rueth, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Schmidt and family, and Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Schmidt of Loyal. One son, Paul, of Pearson, was unable to attend.

Many of the couples seventy-one grandchildren and twenty-six great-grandchildren also attended. The couple received a gift of money from their children.

Mr. and Mrs. Matthias Schmidt of Colby will observe their fiftieth or golden wedding anniversary Monday, April 8, when special services will be held in their honor at the Reformed church on that day at 2:30 p.m.

Mr. Schmidt was born January 27, 1861 in New Holstein, Wisconsin, and Mrs. Schmidt, whose maiden name was Rosina Lerche, was born March 23, 1868, in Hoeningen, Schlessiem, Germany, and came to the United States with her mother when thirteen years of age and settled in Chilton. Her father died in Germany. They were married in Chilton, Wisconsin, in 1885 and lived on their farm six miles east of Chilton for thirty-six years. They moved to Colby fourteen years ago. They are both enjoying good health and have six children and twenty-five grand children. The children are: Mrs. Alex Thede of Colby, Mrs. Geo. Seisler of Milwaukee, Herman of Kewaskum, Wisconsin, Alvin of Colby, Edward of St. Nazian, Wisconsin, Mrs. Witte of Milwaukee.

Mr. and Mrs. Ted Schmidt of route 1, Abbotsford, were honored Wednesday, June 22, by the Holton Homemakers at a surprise observance of their silver wedding anniversary.

The evening began with a shivaree after which pinochle and sheepshead were played at Mrs. Schmidt responded to the request of the guests with accordion music.

A fun box predicting the future of the couple added entertainment for the evening’s festivities which took place on the lawn at the Schmidt farm.

The honor guests, crowned the royalty of the evening, were also presented with a corsage and boutonniere, and a gift.

At the close of the evening, refreshments were served.

The former Cecilia Helfert and Theodore Schmidt were married June 3, 1941, at St. Louis Catholic church, Dorchester.

Mr. Schmidt, a sheet metal worker, worked under civil service until the end of World War 2 at Patterson air field, Ohio, Truax field at Madison, and the navy yard at Bremerton, Wash.  About 1951, they purchased a farm home with three acres of land in the town of Holton and have made their home there.

The Schmidts have five children: Petty Officer First Class Dan Schmidt, of the navy, a recruit officer at Racine, Mrs. Vic (Colleen) Woolery, Minneapolis, Alan, Madison, Bill and Aaron, at home.

A surprise reception for Mr. and Mrs. William Schmidtke, honoring them on their fortieth wedding anniversary, was held Sunday in the York Town hall.  Over 125 friends and relatives greeted (a few words missing.)

Mrs. Otto Schmidtke, assisted by Mrs. Fred Summers of Unity, planned the event, which was a complete surprise to Mr. and Mrs. Schmidtke, even if the plans had been in formation for more than two weeks. The wedding cake was baked by Mrs. Otto Schmidtke.

William Schmidtke and Esther Welch were married June 21, 1922, at Granton, in the home of Mrs. Schmidtke’s grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Lon Stevens, by the late Rev. Wilson Mallory.  Their attendants were R. A. Welch, brother of Mrs. Schmidtke, and Caroline (Schmidtke) Mulvey, a sister of Mr. Schmidtke.

The Schmidtkes have been life-long residents of Granton and have been active in community affairs.

They have no children, but made a home for a nephew, Gene Turner, now of Rockford, Ill, and a niece, Mrs. J. H. (Beverly) Eggleston, now living in Stanton, Calif.

Mr. and Mrs. William Schmidtke, who have lived all their married years in Granton, will observed their 50th wedding anniversary Sunday, June 25, with an open house from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Granton United Methodist Church. Both Esther and William Schmidtke have been honored as outstanding citizens of their community during Granton Fall Festival celebrations.

The Schmidtkes were married June 21, 1922, in Granton at the home of the bride’s grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Lon Stevens. The Rev. Wilson Mallory was the officiating clergyman. Attendants were the couple’s brother and sister, Carolyn Schmidtke (now deceased) and Rollo Welch. Mr. Welch lived in Tennessee and is expected to be present for the anniversary observance.

Mr. Schmidtke is one of 12 children of the late Herman and Augusta Schmidtke of the Town of Fremont. He attended country schools and did farm work in Wisconsin and in North Dakota before joining the army in 1918. Wounded while on duty in France just 10 days before the November 11 Armistice was signed, he returned to Granton after his discharge and did garage work for the late Harold Garbisch.

Mrs. Schmidtke, the daughter, of the late Anson C. and Mabel (Stevens) Welch, was born in Spencer. A teacher by profession she taught three years in country schools and two years in the upper grades of the Granton school before her marriage. She returned again to teaching during the years of 1945-1947. In the intervening years, Mrs. Schmidtke continued her interests in education by serving as clerk of the Granton School board for 25 years. She has also been active in church school and music at the United Methodist Church, of which both are members.

During the early years of their marriage, Mr. Schmidtke was a bulk petroleum products distributor, having purchase the local agency from the late Joe Zilk of Neillsville. He sold the dealership in 1947, and purchased an insurance agency from the late Mrs. George Wilson in 1950. Mr. Schmidtke wrote insurance until he sold the agency and retired in 1965. A past member of the Granton Village board and a past Village treasurer, he retired from public office about five years ago.

Mrs. Schmidtke, like her husband, has also been active in civic and church affairs. She is a charter member of the Granton Women’s Civic Club, and served as its first president. A member of Royal Neighbors Fidelity Camp No. 6375 for over 50 years, she holds the office of receiver. Mrs. Schmidtke is also presidents of the United Methodist Women.

Both are in very good health and enjoy their home and flower raising activities. They take pleasure in traveling and keeping up on current events as well.

While they have no children of their own, the couple made a home for a niece and nephew and helped raise them. The nephew, Gene Turner of Rockford, Il, and his sister, Mrs. J. H. (Beverly Turner) Eggleston of Stanton, Ca, are planning the Sunday anniversary observance and will be present for the occasion together with their families.

Mr. and Mrs. John Schmitt will be the happy recipients of many congratulations and tokens of esteem Saturday when they will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary. The anniversary will be celebrated with an eight o’clock mass at the St. Louis Catholic Church Saturday morning with Father Paul Pitzenberger officiating.

The day will be spent quietly and a wedding dinner will be served at 6 o’clock to the immediate family at the home of Mr. and Mrs. F.V. Hiebsch.

The Schmitts were married at Marathon City, Wis., April 29th, 1883, and made their first home at Rozelville. Mrs. Schmitt was the former Miss Margaret Fuchs, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Fuchs, of Sheboygan County. Mr. Schmitt is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Schmitt of Outagamie County. The Schmitt’s left Rozelville in 1888 for Marshfield. A few years later they moved to Medford and about 1897 they moved to Dorchester (Clark Co., Wis.). In 1902 the Schmitt’s left for Marshfield, where they lived until 1912, when Mr. Schmitt became the Sheriff of Wood County and they moved to Wis. Rapids. In 1914 they returned to Dorchester, where they have resided since.

Their four children, Mrs. H. Koppa of Flint, Mich., Mrs. F.V. Hiebsch, Mrs. E.J. Fuchsgruber, and Miss ?illie, all of Dorchester, will be present for the golden anniversary celebration. Four of their six grandchildren will be present for the celebration. The grandchildren are Misses ?ath and Bertha Hiebsch, Gretchen, ?ath and Dawn Fuchsgruber, and Dorothy Koppa.

To Dorchester people, the Schmitts are a necessary part of the village. In their many years here they have endeared themselves to everyone. The genial kindness of Mr. Schmitt and the sweet, lovable qualities of Mrs. Schmitt have brought them a host of friends who will be happy to offer the Schmitts their sincerest congratulations on their golden wedding anniversary.

Mr. and Mrs. Graham Thayer and son, Bruce, Mr. Harley Thayer and Mr. and Mrs. Henry Binning left Saturday morning for Oakfield and stopped for dinner at the Jennings Harger home in Baraboo, continuing on to Oakfield in the afternoon. Other relatives who went to Oakfield were Mr. and Mrs. Sewell Cook, Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Binning, Unity; and Mr. and Mrs. Rudy Anderson and children, Marshfield; who drove down Sunday morning and all attended the Golden Wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Erwin Schmitz, who were former Unity residents, but have lived in Fond du Lac and Oakfield for many years.

Mr. Schmitz with his father operated a store in Unity in what is known as the Kuehnau building but is now used by the St. Croix Corp. Mrs. Schmitz was the former Mable Thayer, sister of Harley Thayer of Unity.

Seventy-five guests were entertained at dinner at the Sunset Supper Club in Fond du Lac and in the afternoon were entertained at a reception and supper at the Schmitz home at Oakfield. At the dinner, the Toastmaster read an account of the marriage of Mr. and Mrs. Schmitz from the Marathon County Register of that date in 1903. Mr. Henry Binning and Mrs. Cora Yahr Rheinhart were attendants at the wedding. Others who spoke at the reception were S. A. Cook, Keith Binning, son of Mrs. Cora Binning, and Jack Binning, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Binning, Fond du Lac.

The Unity people returned to their homes Sunday evening.

Schmitz, Mr. and Mrs. Lamar (Silver – 6 August 1974)

Mr. and Mrs. Lamarr Schmitz, Neillsville, held open house Saturday evening at Bali Hai Supper Club in observance of their 25th wedding anniversary.

The former Thelma June Ott, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Ott, Marshfield, and Lamar Schmitz, son of Mr. and Mrs. George Schmitz, Lynn, were married August 6, 1949, at Nasonville by Pastor Melville.

They are parents of Richard of West Salem, and Duane, Dean, and Darla of Neillsville. A fourth son, Daniel is deceased.

Thelma and Lamar Schmitz have been in the grocery business for 25 years, and for the past 10 years have owned and operated Schmitz Family Market in Neillsville.

Wally Ives provided music for their wedding dance 25 years ago, and was on hand with music for the Satruday evening observance, which feathered a Hawaiian mock wedding. Those in the mock wedding party were Bob and Grace Urban, Jean and Francis Laatch, Jerry and Faye Opelt, and Don and Rosie Kunze.

The anniversary cake was made by Mrs. Walter Ott.

All the couple’s original attendants were on hand for the event, and Mr. and Mrs. Schmitz, received a treasure chest of 100 silver dollars from their children. 

Schneider, Mr./Mrs. M. (Gold - 1 Feb 1924) & (71st - 1945)

Mr. and Mrs. Schneider celebrated their golden wedding last Sunday in a very fitting manner.

The affair, which was a surprise to the couple, had bee carefully planned beforehand and everything was in ship shape.

Their pastor, Rev. V. M. Kieper, spoke feelingly from the text found in Psalms 116: 12, after which the golden wedding ceremony was performed, which in turn was followed by a very bounteous dinner served to all present.

Mr. and Mrs. Schneider were both born in Russia-Poland and they were married there in the village of Rodam, Feb. 1st, 1874, by Rev. Otto Wistehube. Churches were far away and they were obliged to drive ten Russian miles, its equivalent here would be fifty miles. The trip was long and took all night as travel wasn't as swift as now, but it was finally accomplished and they were happily married.

Three children were born to the, William of Medford, Mrs. J. Bremer of Dorchester, and one son who died in Russia at the age of nine years. Besides these children they now have eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Mrs. Schneider also has three brothers and one sister living.

They came to the United States in 1893 and settled near Gillett, Wis.

Mr. and Mrs. Michael Schneider observed their 71st wedding anniversary quietly at the home of their daughter, Mrs. John Bremer, Feb. 1. Mr. Schneider, who is 94 years old, and his wife, who will be 89 on Feb. 29, both are in comparatively good health.

Mr. and Mrs. Schneider were both born in Rodom, Russian, Poland. Mr. Schneider on Sept. 27, 1850, and Mrs. Schneider on Feb. 29, 1856. They were married in 1874 in the town of their birth.

The Schneiders came to the United States in 1892 and settled in Gillet, Wis., where they lived until 1903 when they moved to a farm northeast of Dorchester, Wis. They retired from farming in 1915 and moved to a home south of the village where they lived until October, 1941, when they went to live with their only daughter, Mrs. John Bremer.

The couple have two children, Mrs. John Bremer, Dorchester and William Schneider, Medford. There are 11 grand children, 12 great grand children and two great great grand children.

Mr. and Mrs. Schneider are members of the St. Peter’s Lutheran church and Mrs. Schneider is a member of the St. Peter’s Lutheran Ladies Aid Society of Dorchester, Wis.

Mr. and Mrs. George Schoch (50th - 31 MAR 1898)

Mr. and Mrs. George Schoch kept open house from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Apr. 4, in celebration of their golden wedding anniversary. Lunch was served to all callers. Later all relatives were entertained at dinner. A beautiful wedding cake centered the dining table.

Mr. and Mrs. Schoch were married in Loyal on Mar. 31, 1898, and have made their home here since, except for a short time spent in Waukesha. Mr. Schoch was for many years in business in Loyal, retiring 21 years ago. Mrs. Schoch is a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. William Lenling, and Mr. Schoch is a son of the Late Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Schoch.

Two attendants at the wedding were Albert Lenling, now of Wheeler, and Albert Davel of Loyal, both of whom were present Sunday.

The golden-wedding couple received many gifts, among which was a lovely flower pot of yellow tulips given by the Ladies Aid of Trinity Lutheran church and presented by the Rev. and Mrs. J. C. Langholz.

Schoen, Mr. and Mrs. Henry (60th - 26 December 1960)

Mr. and Mrs. Henry B. Schoen of he Town of Pine Valley observed their 60th wedding anniversary at their home Monday evening.

Eight of their nine children brought food and their families and entered into the family celebration.

The Schoens lived for 43 years on a farm in the Town of Levis, near the East Fork Bridge, where they grubbed out a living for themselves and their children. 

"It was hard going, and we had to work to make it," recalled Mrs. Schoen Monday afternoon. She is 78, and Mr. Schoen is 94, although his health is good and he reads newspapers and watches television without the aid of glasses.

The Schoens were married December 26, 1900, in Owatonna, Minn., where they lived for five years after their marriage, and where the first two of their children were born. During that time Mr. Schoen was a blacksmith and wagon-maker.  He operated a large shop in Owatonna, which extended a block in length.

But the building burned to the ground in 1905, and that was the eventful thing that brought them to Clark County. Mr. Schoen had a desire to go onto a farm, and with automobiles coming in, he foresaw a decline in the use of horses and wagons - and in blacksmithing.

So he came to Neillsville, put his money down on a farm in southern Levis, and brought his family here.  Both of  them agree now that the land was poor, and that it was far from the best farm available; but, as Mrs. Schoen put it: "By the time we had bought the farm and cattle, we were too strapped to do anything about it."

They worked hard and made the farm return a fair living.  During that time they raised their nine children, and are proud of the fact that one of them had an opportunity to attend college in La Crosse for two years.

Today, Mr. Schoen is more active than many men several years his junior.  In the fall he insisted on splitting firewood, much against the wishes of his children, who thought the activity too much for a man of 94.

"But I need to do it,": he observed.  "That is what has kept me going."

The children say that Mr. Schoen’s doctor has told him his prospects are good for living beyond the century mark.

Mrs. Schoen, 16 years her husband’s junior, is in robust health, also, except for a severe arthritic condition which makes it difficult for her to get around.

With the exception of their oldest, Charles, who was killed (1927) in a construction accident in Chicago, all the children are living.  All were present, and brought along most of the couple’s 30 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.

An anniversary dinner and open house marked the Golden Wedding celebration of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Schoettler, Wednesday, September 12. Sixteen close relatives were present for the dinner which was served on a gold colored cloth covered table, decorated with a centerpiece of yellow roses and yellow candles.

Fifty yellow roses were distributed in bouquets about the rooms. A bouquet of yellow glads, mums and pompoms, a gift of the three grandchildren, also added to the interest of the decorations.

Many friends and relatives called during the afternoon and evening and expressed their congratulations with cards and gifts.

Present for the observance were their three children, Mrs. Leona Zeier of Wausau, Mrs. Evelyn Schweiger, Loyal, and Donald Schoettler, Green Bay. The three grandchildren, Nancy, Lionel and Dean Schweiger, were also present.

Two sisters of Mrs. Schoettler, Mrs. Lydia Warner, Racine, one of the original attendants, and Mrs. Anna Plath, also of Racine, were present; also two brothers, Otto and Albert Fravert of Greenwood.

A sister of Mr. Schoettler, Mrs. Edna Bartline, came from DePere for the celebration.

Other guests came from Racine, Cudahy, Green Bay, Wausau, DePere, Granton, Tomahawk, Greenwood and Loyal.

Mrs. Schoettler, nee Alvina Fravert, was born in the town of Warner, July 15, 1884, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Fravert. She received her education in the rural schools of warner and lived there until her marriage to Ernest Schoettler, son of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Schoettler, Beaver.

He was born in the town of Beaver, on Aug. 23, 1882 and received his education there. Most of his life he has been engaged in farming.

Wedding rites for Alvina and ernest Schoettler were read by the Rev. John Schmaltz in the West Side Church, town of Warner, September 12, 1906.

After 38 years on a farm in the town of Beaver Mr. and Mrs. Schoettler retired from farming eight years ago and moved to Loyal. They are both affiliated with Trinity Lutheran Church.

Mr. and Mrs. Frank J. Schopper, Dorchester, observed their golden wedding anniversary Sunday beginning at 2.P. memorial mass at St. Louis Catholic Church at Dorchester. Mrs. Schopper’s nephew, the Rev. Joseph Oertli, Omaha, Nebraska, celebrated the mass. Robert Kempf, Wausau, a grandson, was lector, and three grandsons, Patrick and Thomas Kirchele, Friendship, and Robert Kempf, Wausau, were mass servers.

About 150 persons attended the reception held in Memorial Hall following the church services.

Frank Shopper was born October 10, 1895, in the Town of Holton on the place where he still resides. His parents were Mr. and Mrs. Charles Schopper.

Lucy Wagner was born December 21, 1902 at Chicago, Illinois. Her parents were Mr. and Mrs. John Wagner. The couple was married at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Milwaukee on June 29, 1927. Their attendants were: Agnes Wagner, the bride’s sister, and Joseph Gebert, Medford, cousin of the groom. Both attendants were present for the anniversary observance.

The couple has farmed the home place in the Town of Holton since their marriage. They have four daughters. They are Dale Elliott (Delores) , Chippewa Falls, Mrs. Jerome (May Ann) Reynolds, Dorchester, Mrs. Donald (Joan) Kempf, Wausau, and Mrs. John (Dorothy) Kirschele, Friendship. The four daughters were in charge of the anniversary observance Sunday. The Schoppers have 15 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.

Mr. and Mrs. Edward Schroeder of Granton Quietly observed their 55th wedding anniversary Tuesday.
 

Mrs. Schroeder has been confined to hospital and a bed at home for the last seven and one-half weeks with a double fracture of the pelvis, suffered in a fall.  She hopes to start getting around a little this weekend.
 

The Schroeders were married December 3, 1902, in the Town of Washburn. The house in which the ceremony took place still stands the first place east of Cannonville corner.
 

At that time Mrs. Schroeder (nee Estelle Babcock) was teaching at the Shortville School.  After the minister, the Rev. Guy Campbell of the Methodist church at Neillsville, concluded the ceremony, Mr. Schroeder prepared to return to his work without his bride. 
 

He was working with the Connor lumber company in the northern part of the state.  There a tornado had ripped through timber holdings of the Connors, tearing a path two miles wide.  Ninety men were encamped in that area to clean up and save as much of the owned timber as possible.
 

The bride, honoring her contractual obligation to the Shortville school district, completed the next three months of school before joining her husband in the lumber camp.
 

After a few months there, the Schroeders returned to Granton, where Mr. Schroeder continued in the employment of the Connor lumber company, which operated a yard at Granton.
 

From 1914 to 1934 Mr. Schroeder served as postmaster in Granton, and he was honored by the businessmen, Rotary and F. F. A. youths of Granton high a few months ago during their annual fall festival.
 

Mr. Schroeder, who will be 87 on December 12, is nine years the senior of his wife.  She will be 77 in January.
 

Advice for young couples just starting out; "You have to learn to give and take," says Mrs. Schroeder.
 

There are three children: Charles, a pharmacist in Eau Claire; and the twins, Mrs. Herbert (Marie) Nielsen, who is connected with the state department of public welfare in Eau Claire, and Marion, better know in this area as "Sam" who lives in Racine.

Mr. and Mrs. Henry Schuette, residents of Clark county for over 30 years, observed their 51st wedding anniversary Tuesday.

Mr. Schuette was 75 years old on October 20th, and was born in the town of Kussuth, Manitowoc county. Mrs. Schuette was born in Berlin, Germany, and was 74 years old September 3rd. The family came to the United States when she was two years old and after living four months in Chicago they moved to Manitowoc county.

The couple was married in the town of Franklin, Manitowoc county, March 19th, 1889, and lived in the towns of Kussuth and Manitowoc Rapids for 21 years prior to coming to Clark county to engage in farming. They are still on the same farm at Unity, route 1, which now is being worked by their son, Henry, Jr.

Mr. and Mrs. Schuette are the parents of eight children. Those living are Arthur Schuette, Colby; Walter Schuette, Marshfield; Edwin Schuette, Sheldon, Rusk county and Henry and Hugo, Unity, Rt. 1. A son, Richard, died in 1938 in Braddock, N.D., and Reinhard and Olga died in infancy. There are 23 grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Mr. Schuette has three brothers, Otto, William and Herman, and a sister, Mrs. William Fehring, all living at Manitowoc. Mrs. Schuette has a brother, William Regling, Antigo, and a sister, Mrs. Herman Goetsch, living at Fond du Lac.

Mr. and Mrs. Schuette are members of the South Green Grove Lutheran Church.

Lester and Gertrude Schuette, no of Aurora, Colorado, were honored at a golden wedding anniversary celebration on October 11 in Spencer. Lester Schuette and Gertrude Severson were married on November 28, 1931, in Neillsville.

Lester was born on August 21, 1902, in Ellisville to August and Margaret Schuette. He attended Oak Grove School in the Town of Beaver and later Unity High School. He then farmed in the Town of Beaver. He now enjoys making picture frames and playing cards and pool.

Gertrude was born on January 16, 1908, in the Town of Warner to Sam and Mary Severson. She received her education in Greenwood area schools. Her present inte4rests include teaching art and doing oil and acrylic painting and rosemaling.

The couple retired from farming in 1971. Four years ago, they moved to Colorado to be near their sole child, Mrs. Marian (Jean) Baumann. The Schuettes also have two grandchildren.

The golden anniversary celebration was a surprise for the couple. They arrived, along with their daughter, in the area expecting to attend a silver anniversary party for their nephew and wife, Mr. and Mrs. Eldred Schuette.

The celebration was held at the home of Grace Luntz in Spencer. The event was hosted by Gertrude’s sisters and brother, Grace Luntz and Leida Kurtzheim, both of Spencer; Dorothy Molle, Abbotsford; Angela Severson, Milwaukee; and Hugh Severson, Greenwood.

Mr. and Mrs. Arthur (Anita) Schuh of Route 2, Colby, who were married May 11, 1933 in Colby, observed the golden anniversary of their marriage May 1 at a Mass at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Colby, the Very Rev. Raymond J. Pedretti officiating.

A family dinner was served at Old Cedar House, Abbotsford, followed by a reception at the home of their son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Valgene Fischer, Colby, hosted by their children and grandchildren.

Two of the original attendants present were Leo Bell, Chippewa Falls, and Anthony Schuh, Colby.

The Schuhs have two children, Ambrose Schuh and Mrs. Valgene (Marie) Fischer, both of Colby; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Schuh worked for 27 years for packaging Corporation of America and farmed in the Colby area. They are members of St. Mary's Catholic Church.

Mr. and Mrs. Simon Schuld observed their golden wedding Tuesday at their old home in the Pelsdorf community, southeast of Loyal. More than 100 relatives and friends were present. Father Aurit, pastor of St. Balthasar’s Church, officiated at the nuptial mass. Mr. and Mrs. Schuld came to Clark county 50 years ago following their marriage in Jefferson county.

Simon Schuld was born March 26, 1856, and was united in marriage to Theresa Kooch, who was born Aug. 12, 1858, on Nov. 25, 1880, in St. Laurentius church by Father Reinhardt.

Mr. and Mrs. Schuld have one son, Leander, who lives on the old homestead, and five daughters, Mrs. William Hagen, Milwaukee; Mrs. William Gall, Mrs. Ed. Domine, Mrs., John Bauer, and Mrs. George Frie, all of this vicinity. Mrs. Hagen was unable to attend the golden wedding. Besides the other children there were 26 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren present.

The following guests from away were also present; William Vogel, who was best man at the first wedding; Mr. and Mrs. John Vogel, and Adam Wedel, all of Jefferson county.

Mr. and Mrs. Robert Schulte celebrated their golden wedding anniversary at a family supper Saturday at the Otto Schulte farm, the same farm home where the couple began their married life fifty years ago. Mr. and Mrs. Robert Schulte resided in this city for twenty-four years and prior to that time were prominent farmers in the town of Colby, Shortly before their marriage, Mr. Schulte purchased a tract of 80 acres of land which by hard and diligent work they built into a splendid farm. In addition they acquired more land until the Schulte farm consisted of nearly 200 acres.

Mr. Schulte was born in the town of Herman, Sheboygan county, on June 26th, 1859, and came to Clark county in April, 1879.

Mrs. Schulte, whose maiden name was Paulina Janing, was born in Manitowoc county, July 15th, 1866, and came to Clark county a few years after Mr. Schulte’s arrival. They were married at Green Grove on July 1st, 1888.

They have four children: Otto Schulte on the home farm, Mrs. Edward Schuh of Dixon, Ill., Ernest Schulte and Miss Luella Schulte of Milwaukee. One daughter died in infancy. There are seven grand children and two great grand children.

Mr. and Mrs. Robert Schulte, residents of Colby and the town of Colby (Clark Co., Wis.) for nearly 60 years, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary Saturday and were honored at a 5 o’clock dinner given at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Otto Schulte.

Mr. Schulte was born in the town of Herman, Sheboygan Co., June 26, 1859 and Mrs. Schulte nee Pauline Janning, was born in Manitowoc Co., July 15, 1866. They were married at Green Grove, July 1st, 1888, settling on an 80 acres of virgin forest in the town of Colby. In 1914 they retired and moved to Colby, leaving a 200 acre farm to their son, Otto, and wife.

On July 4, 1928, Mr. and Mrs. George Schultz of the town of Levis, Clark County, Wis., whose farm home is located at Dells Dam, celebrated their golden wedding, a great many relatives and friends gathering at the home that day in honor of the event.

Mr. and Mrs. Schultz have lived the full fifty years in Levis, the first five years of their married life being spent on the Goosbeck farm nearby, then moving to their present home, where they have lived constantly ever since. Mr. Schultz had charge of the old Dells Dam used for log-driving purposes, helping to build it and superintending the flooding operations as long as the logging lasted. He knew all the earliest settlers in the town and saw all the changes that came as the timber resources gave place to farming. His strength and skill as a river-man gave him great prestige among lumbermen of that day, and the cordial hospitality of himself and his wife made Dells Dam a favorite place along the river. Since the passing of the lumber days, Mr. and Mrs. Schultz have lived quietly on their farm; for some time past their son Guy and his wife helping in carrying on the place; they also assisted them in entertaining the guests of the day. A fine dinner was served at the noon hour and also in the evening.

Among the relatives and friends who were here for the anniversary were: Martin Schultz, a brother from San Diego, and his wife; a sister, Mrs. Gustav Guse, her husband and son Max of Mayville; a son-in-law, Frank Abend and his mother of Alma Center; Mr. and Mrs. Chris Kapfer, Mr. and Mrs. G. C. Huntley and daughter Marian, Mr. and Mrs. Tony Hantke, Mr. and Mrs. A. Bakken, Mrs. O. J. Blencoe and Mr. and Mrs. C. R. Sturdevant of Neillsville; Mrs. G. C. Mr and Mrs. Herman Schultz celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary Jan. 10, at their home in Granton by a large number of friends and neighbors going in with well filled baskets to surprise them. The elderly folks came in the afternoon and had supper and in the evening the young folks came in to enjoy themselves dancing and playing cards and had a midnight lunch.

To this union were born five children: Harvey, Archie, Emma, Bertie and Victor, all of whom were home for the event except Emma who resides in Oshkosh and who was unable to come.

The guests left Mr. and Mrs. Schultz presents and money as a token of remembrance.

Mr. and Mrs. Otto M. Schultz observed their 40th wedding anniversary August 29 in Neillsville.  They were married in Immanuel Lutheran Church, Globe, in 1922, by the Rev. Mr. Perisius.  They were attended by Mrs. Helen Bean of Stratford and Irvin Hemp of Weston.

They farmed in the Town of Weston or 37 years, and moved to Neillsville three years ago. Their son, Howard and his family now operate the farm.

Mr. and Mrs. Schultz have five children: Wilbert of Comanche, Ia., Howard of Weston, Robert and Donald of Marshfield, and Mrs. Robert (Ruth) Lechner of Waukegan, Ill.  They also have 15 grandchildren.

Visitors during the week included: Mr. and Mrs. Donald Schultz and family, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Schultz and family of Marshfield; Mrs. Robert Lechner and two children of Waukegan, Ill.; the Wilbert Schultz family of Comanche, Ia.; the Howard Schultz family of Christie; Mr. and Mrs. Frank Stonek of Cudahy; and members of the Buettner families of Neillsville, Minnesota and Wisconsin.

Mr. and Mrs. Schultz are recuperating from injuries suffered in an auto accident a week ago near Lake Geneva.  They were on their way home from Waukegan at the time. The woman driving the other car was killed.  Mrs. Schultz went through the windshield of the Schultz car and received facial cuts and bruises.  Both Mr. and Mrs. Schultz spent a few days in an Elkhorn hospital.

The accident caused the cancellation of the 40th wedding anniversary and a family reunion planned for 90 relatives.

The 30th wedding anniversary of Wallace and Jean Schultz was celebrated Saturday, June 26, 1976, with a renewal of their marriage vows at Christ Lutheran Church, Abbotsford.

The ceremony was performed by the Rev. Kenneth Loehrke.

Attendants were their children, the Rev. and Mrs. Ronald Schultz, Bradley Schultz, Michael Schultz, Michael Schultz, Mr. and Mrs. Randall Schultz, and Linda Schultz.

Flower girls were daughter, Lisa and granddaughter, Aimee Schultz, daughter of the Rev. and Mrs. Schultz.

A solo “Because” was sung by Joan Schuette, and a duet “The Lord’s Prayer” was sung by Linda Schultz and Joan Schuette, accompanied by Mary Jean Bell.

A special prayer was said by their son, the Rev. Schultz.

Ushers for the service were Jerome Zygowicz and Randy Schultz, Colby.

A reception was held after the ceremony at the VFW Hall in Colby.

Out of town friends and relatives attended from Michigan, Janesville, Eau Claire, Menomonie, North Dakota, Minnesota, Wausau, Neillsville, Bayfield and from the surrounding communities.

Mr. and Mrs. August Schulz of the city of Colby celebrated their fiftieth or golden wedding anniversary at the home in Colby Sunday, Sept. 6th, the affair being arranged by their sons and daughters which was greatly appreciated by Mr. and Mrs. Schulz. Mr. Schulz was born in Province Brandenburg, Germany, on Feb. 14th, 1853 and came to the United States in 1872. He worked in Sheboygan county for five years and then came to Colby, buying a piece of stump land from the railroad company. Mrs. Schulz was born in Manitowoc county on April 28, 1860, and came to Colby with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. George Zella, who bought railroad land in the town of Green Grove, several months after Mr. Schulz came here. They were married on September 4th, 1881, in the town of Colby on the farm occupied by Mr. Schulz and lived on the same until October, 1921, when they moved into the city of Colby. The farm is now occupied by their son, Ernest, and family.

When Mr. and Mrs. Schulz first came here, the farms were not cleared and improved as they are now but homes, barns, etc. had to be built and land had to be cleared. At first, Mr. Schulz purchased forty acres, two and one-half miles west of Colby in the town of Colby, but, later in 1900, bought eighty more acres. His land was all brush and stumps, but, by hard work and privations, built a splendid farm. He only had a few cows at first but gradually built up a herd. The method of conveyance, in the early days, was with the use of "jumpers" and steers and Mr. Schulz broke in eight steers before he purchased horses. There were only a few houses and stores in Colby at the time.

Mr. and Mrs. Schulz had nine children, four of whom are dead. Those still living are George Schulz, Mrs. George Theilig, Mr. Ernest Schulz, all of Colby, Gottlieb Schulz of Spencer and Mrs. Ben Smart of Colby. They have nineteen grand children.

A surprise was tendered Mr. and Mrs. August Schulz on their fifty-fifth wedding anniversary on Friday night, Sept. 4th, by their children, grand children, great grand children and some relatives and friends. Mr. Schulz will be 84 years old and Mrs. Schulz 77. They have three sons and two daughters, namely: George Schulz of Colby, Ernest W. Schulz of Colby, Gottlieb Schulz of Spencer, Mrs. Minnie Theilig of Colby and Mrs. Annie Smart of Colby. Five years ago they celebrated their golden wedding having been married fifty five years ago at Green Grove.

At the age of eighteen, Mr. Schulz immigrated from Germany with his parents and located in Sheboygan. After working for four years in Sheboygan county he came to Colby with his parents in 1876 where he bought a forty acre piece of woodland. Colby at that time only had a few houses and the adjoining country was a vast wilderness with very few settlers that had just moved in at that time.

Mrs. Schulz was born at Centerville, Wis., and came to the town of Green Grove with her parents in 1876 at Christmas time.

They lived through the ox and jumper days which was the only way of transportation through the woods at that time. Their homes were rough log buildings. Farm animals consisted of a few chickens, a cow and a team of oxen. The sale of logs made them their living. Eggs were only six cents a dozen and butter seven cents a pound.

Several times Mr. Schulz walked to Minnesota to work in the harvest fields in order to earn some cash and then he came back on the train. In the winter, he worked in lumber camps. As the country became more settled, he helped build roads for the town through the woods where no axe had been laid before. He also was a building mover by trade and he moved many buildings and put them on foundations which improved this community.

In 1921, Mr. and Mrs. Schulz retired after they sold their farm to one of their sons and moved into the city of Colby.

A very pretty wedding took place at Zion’s Lutheran church at Colby Saturday afternoon at 3:00 o’clock, Rev. O. Hoffmann officiating, when Miss Clara Theilig, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Theilig, became the bride of Mr. Alex C. Winkel, son of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Winkel. The bride was attired in a long white satin dress with large puff sleeves to the elbow and fitted to the wrists. Her shower bouquet consisted of roses, carnations and swansonia. The bridesmaid, Dorothy Winkel, cousin of the groom, wore a dress of pink taffeta and a headband of pink satin set with rhinestones. Her shoulder corsage consisted of pink asters and ferns. The maid of honor, Minerva Schultz, cousin of the bride, wore a dress of nile green barred marquisette with headband of nile green satin set with rhinestones. Her shoulder corsage consisted of pink asters and ferns. The groom was attended by Mr. Arthur Krueger and Mr. Elmer Meyer. This was also the 56th wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. August Schulz, grandparents of the bride, and birthday anniversary of the groom’s grand mother, Mrs. G. J. Fuge, formerly of Brillion.

During the ceremony, the girls’ quartet sang, "I Love You Truly."

A reception was held at the home of the bride, supper being served for ninety. The home was nicely decorated with pink, green and white streamers and garden flowers. In the evening, a wedding dance was given at Wiedenhoeft’s pavilion.

The young couple will be at home immediately on a farm in the town of Green Grove.

The bride chose Saturday as her wedding day as it was also the fifty-sixth wedding anniversary of her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. August Schulz, Colby, who were married at Colby September 4, 1881.

Mr. Schulz, who was born in Brandenburg, Prussia, Germany, Feb. 14, 1853, came to the United States when 19 years of age and after spending four years in Sheboygan moved to Clark county and bought a tract of land in the town of Colby. By hard labor it was converted into a beautiful farm and it is now the property of their son, Ernest. In addition to his farm work Mr. Schulz engaged in the house moving business.

Mrs. Schulz was born at Centerville, Manitowoc county, April 28th, 1860, and she came to the Colby community with her parents in 1876.

About sixteen years ago they moved to Colby. Mr. and Mrs. Schulz have five children, Mrs. George Theilig, Colby, Mrs. Ben Smart, town of Hull, Ernest and George Schulz, town of ?. There are twenty-five grand children and nine great-grandchildren.

Mr. and Mrs. August Schulz observed their sixtieth wedding anniversary on Sunday. Their five children, 23 grand children and 16 great grand children all were present for the great event. Dinner was served and covers were laid for fifty-five guests.

Mr. Schulz came to the United States from Germany, at the age of 17, and settled at Sheboygan, Wis. Sixty-five years ago he came to Colby when this community was still a vast wilderness.

Mrs. Schulz was born at Cleveland, Wis., and came to the town of Green Grove with her parents some years later.

Mr. and Mrs. Schulz were married sixty years ago at Green Grove and settled on a tract of wild land, and, by hard work and privations, they made it into a fine farm which is now owned by their son, Ernst.

They witnessed the great changes of the world from the days of the oxen to the present time of the automobile and airplane. They have reached the ages of 88 and 81 respectively.

The Lawrence Weber home in the town of Colby was the scene of a family gathering on Thanksgiving Day in honor of Mrs. Weber’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Peter Schumacher of Dorchester, Wisconsin, who marked their 40th wedding anniversary.

Joining with them in the observance were their six children and their families - Melvin and Robert Schumacher and Mrs. Bryce (Marlene) Hinke of Dorchester, Mrs. Lawrence (Verna) Weber of Colby, Mrs. Leo (Agnes) Zirngibl of Medford and Mrs. Gordon (Celia) Johnson of Pennsylvania.

Their marriage was performed in St. Louis Catholic church at Dorchester on November 22, 1916. Following their marriage, the Schumachers lived for two years in the town of Mayville where Mr. Schumacher operated a cheese factory. In 1918, they moved onto a farm in the town of Little Black, near Dorchester, where they have since resided.

Over two hundred guests attended the “open house” at Memorial Hall in Dorchester Friday night in observance of the 60th wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Schumacher. All of their six children, many of their grandchildren with their families, and two of the original attendants at the wedding were present for the occasion. Nick Schumacher, Dorchester, brother, and Mrs. Louis Ludwig, Stetsonville, sister of the groom, were there. Mrs. Al House, the former Caroline Decker, now in California, was unable to be present, and the other attendants, George Decker, is deceased.

The Schumacher’s six children are: Robert, living on the home farm in the Town of Little Black, and Melvin, Town of Mayville; Mrs. Verna Weber, Colby; Mrs. Gordon (Cecilia) Johnson, Newport, Oregon; Mrs. Leo (Agnes) Zirngibl, Medford; and Mrs. Bryce (Marlene) Hinke, Town of Mayville. They have 21 grandchildren, and 19 great-grandchildren.

Peter Schumacher was born August 24, 1894, at Appleton. The former Goldy Lapp was born January 20, 1897, in the Town of Mayville. They were married at St. Louis Catholic Church at Dorchester November 22, 1916. For two years they operated the Hillside Cheese Factory in Mayville, and then began farming in the Town of Little Black, where they resided until a few years ago when their son Robert took over the farm, and they moved to an adjacent farm. Pete still helps with some farm work occasionally, however.

They are both in good health. Pete enjoys fishing, and Mrs. Schumacher raises a garden. They both enjoy playing cards. They are members of the Dorchester Senior Citizens.

The 10:15 a.m. mass at St. Louise Church Sunday was in their honor, and was celebrated by a former pastor, the Rev. Jacob Burggraf of Spencer. The family attended mass in a group, and later all the children and many of the grandchildren gathered at the Schumacher home. The children presented their parents with a large color television set. They also received a money tree and many other gifts.

Guests coming from a distance included Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Johnson and family, Newport, Oregon; Mr. and Mrs. Brian Schultz, South Bend, Indiana; Mr. and Mrs. Peter Beardsley, Boston, Massachusetts; Mr. and Jerry Weber and family, Moline, Illinois; and Sister Celine Schumacher, La Crosses. Others came from throughout Wisconsin.

The Schuettes were married June 26, 1935, at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, Neillsville, by Pastor Baumann, and have lived in the Neillsville area since that time.

Alvin and Ethel Schutte, Rt. 1, Neillsville, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on June 22, with open house, dinner and a dance at the American Legion Hall in Neillsville.

Alvin was born January 15, 1914. to John and Dorothea Schutte in the Town of Pine Valley. He attended Hillside and St. John’s Lutheran Schools.

The former Ethel Durst was born September 14, 1910, in Fairchild and attended the Cotton School in what is now the Town of Foster, and Fairchild High School.

They were married June 26, 1935, at the parsonage of St. John’s Lutheran Church, with Rev. Baumann officiating. Attendants of the wedding at the celebration were Betty (Durst), Marg and Henry Schutte.

The Schuttes have lived in the Town of Levis, Clark County, since 1938. They have six children, Donald, Diane Buettner, both of Neillsville, Marvin, Luck, Joanne St. John, Port Edwards; and Janice Stenulson and Darryl, both of Beloit. They have 25 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren.

Mr. and Mrs. Henry Schutte were surprised at their 11 W. First St., Neillsville home on Saturday afternoon, September 27. When relatives came to help celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary.

Over 100 relatives were guests at dinner Saturday, in observance of the golden wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. John Schwartz, of Colby. A family style dinner was served at the city hall, after which a reception was held at the Schwartz home.
 

Present for the occasion were their three sons and three daughters: Eddie, La Crosse; Selma, Colby; Mrs. Arvid (Clara) Carlson, Abbotsford; Mrs. Adolph (Anna) Behnke, Cecil; Elmer, Lodi, California; and Harvey, Dorchester; and all of the 14 grand children, except Pfc. David Carlson, who is in Germany, and the two great grand children were also present.
 

Three of the attendants at the wedding were present for the golden anniversary. They are Mrs. Anton Boxrucker, Frank Ludwig and Mrs. Alma Stimm, of Medford. The fourth attendant, Eddie Wolf, Dorchester, is deceased.
 

A brother and four sisters of Mrs. Schwartz were present: William Wolf, Mrs. Anna Wilke, and Mrs. Emma Tauchen, Dorchester; Mrs. Art (Elsa) Bruesewitz, Auburndale; and Mrs. Anton (Ella) Boxrucker, Medford.
 

Numbered among the guests were nieces and nephews of Mr. Schwartz, who is the last member of a large family. They were Mr. and Mrs. Harvey McRae and family, Oak Park, Ill., Mr. and Mrs. William McRae, Ashland; and Miss Ruth Emerson, Milwaukee.
 

Other relatives here for the occasion were from Owen, Curtiss, Oshkosh, Wausau, Auburndale, Tomahawk, Milwaukee, White Plains, N.Y., and Florida.

Mr. and Mrs. John Schwartz, Route 1, Dorchester, observed their 60th wedding anniversary Sunday, July 30, 1972. They were married July 25, 1912 in Marshfield.

Mrs. Schwartz, the former Clara Lindner, was born March 14, 1893, near Colby, and Mr. Schwartz was born February 27, 1884, in School Hill, Wisconsin.

Following their marriage the couple farmed in the Marathon City and Colby areas, and in 1936 moved to their present address.

They have one daughter, Mrs. Lester (Gertrude) Kloth of Dorchester. Their grandchildren are: Kenneth, Edgar, Mrs. Charles (Ruthann) Gebert, Finger, Tenn., Jerry, Dorchester, Mrs. Robert (Bonnie) Svoboda, Stetsonville, and Lyle and Jess, Dorchester. One grandson, David, is deceased. The couple has seven great-grandchildren.

A tiered cake was baked and decorated by Mrs. Kenneth Kloth for the occasion.

On Sunday, September 10, 1944 at their home northwest of Greenwood, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Schwarze celebrated their 25th anniversary by entertaining relatives for dinner and friends and relatives in the evening.

They have two children, Elmer of Los Angeles, Calif., and Bernice at home.

The dinner was prepared by Mrs. Wm. Goeke, Mrs. Henry Vollrath and Mrs. Calvin Franz and was served by the Misses Elsie and Marcella Abel and Arlene Schwarze.

In the evening cards were played by the neighbors and friends and lunch was served.

Mr. and Mrs. Schwarze received a purse of money and other gifts from the group.

Mr. and Mrs. Ewald Schwarze were honored on their 45th anniversary with a dinner hosted by their children, held Sunday evening in Loyal. Mrs. Schwarze wore a corsage of mums and her husband a carnation boutonniere.

The table was centered by an anniversary cake decorated in blue and white.

Ewald Schwarze and the former Sarah Olson were married November 28, 1928, by the Rev. Otto Vriesen in the parsonage of Immanuel United Church. They have resided in the Greenwood area ever since.

All of their children and grandchildren were present. They are: Mr. and Mrs. Donald Schwarze of Marshall; Mr. and Mrs. Charles (Eileen) Krapf and daughters, Sandra and Rochelle, of Milwaukee; Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Schwarze and daughters, Laura and Jana, of Rochester, Minn.

Ewald and Sally Schwarze celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in a party, held Saturday afternoon at the Greenwood American Legion Hall.

The couple was married on November 28, 1928, in the Immanuel Rectory, Greenwood, with the Rev. Otto Vriesen officiating.

Ewald was born January 3, 1906, in Clark County to George and Freida Schwarze. He attended the Benjamin School in Greenwood and famed most of his life, retiring in 1971. Sally was born November 6, 1906, in Marathon County to Olaf and Myrtle Olson. She attended Neillsville Public Schools and UW-Stevens Point after which she worked as a teacher. She enjoys knitting and crocheting. The couple, both members of the Zion United Church of Christ, Greenwood, are in good health.

The Schwarze’s have two sons, Stanley of Rochester, Minn., and Donald of Madison, and one daughter, Eileen Krapf, Greenwood. They also have four granddaughters.

Attending the event was Fern Holt, Neillsville, a sister of Mrs. Schwarze.

Friday, July 20th, 1951, marked the 50th wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Simon Schwarze.

Married at Fairchild, Wis. in 1901, the Schwarzes have spent the entire 50 years of their married life in and around Greenwood (Clark Co., Wis.). They are the parents of four sons: Carl of Napa, California; Emil of Marshfield; Wesley of Greenwood; and Herbert of Madison. They have on granddaughter and four lving grandsons.

The Schwarzes spent the day quietly at home, where they received the well wishes and numerous gifts from their friends. At four o’clock the “Good Will Club,” of which Mrs. Schwarze is a member, served a delicious pot luck lunch to member of the club, friends and close neighbors.

The immediate family spent the evening at the Emil Schwarze home at Marshfield, where they enjoyed an anniversary dinner and family reunion. All member of the family were present, with the exception of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Schwarze and sons, of California, who were unable to attend because of recent hospitalization of one of their sons.

Highlighting the dinner was a huge layer cake topped with a small “bride and groom,” and other appropriate decorations commemorating the 50 years of married life. The sons and their families presented their parents with a chest of silver, with the expression that they would enjoy many more anniversary dinners together.

Mr. and Mrs. Jack Schweiger celebrated their Silver Wedding anniversary with a party Saturday evening, May 5, at the Jake Barr hall. Relatives and friends were in attendance and the evening was spent playing cards and dancing. A lunch was served.

Among the many gifts presented the honor couple was a miniature tree decorated with 25 silver dollars, a gift of Mrs. Schweiger’s Parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Schoettler.

Mr. and Mrs. William Schwellenbach of Neillsville quietly observed their 50th wedding anniversary Tuesday.  William Schwellenbach and Elva Seif were married April 14, 1914, in St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Neillsville.

Their attendants were Joseph Schwellenbach and Clara Seif, both deceased. They are the parents of four children: Mrs. Myron (Ione) Clark of Beloit, Arne of Eau Claire, Clyde of Durand, and Wallace of Beloit.  They have 12 grandchildren.  Mr. Schwellenbach is employed in the B & F Machine Shop in Neillsville.  Mrs. Schwellenbach is well known for her sewing, having been a dressmaker for many years.  Both are in good health and active. But to illness in the family, however, a celebration in observance of the wedding anniversary has been postponed to a later date.

Mr. and Mrs. William Schwellenbach, who quietly observed their 50th wedding anniversary April 14, held a belated celebration Sunday at their home when all of their children, and their families, were present for the weekend.  They are: Mr. and Mrs. Myron Clark and son of Beloit; Mr. and Mrs. Arnie Schwellenbach and family of Eau Claire; Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Schwellenbach and children of Durand; and Mr. and Mrs. Wallace Schwellenbach and family of Beloit.  Mrs. Tena Henchman of Eau Claire, a sister of Mrs. Schwellenbach, also was a weekend guest.  Mr. and Mrs. Linus Prock of Neillsville joined the group Sunday afternoon.  Mr. and Mrs. Schwellenbach treated their guests at a 6:30 p.m. dinner at a local supper club.

Mr. and Mrs. William Schwellenbach of Neillsville celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary Sunday, April 14, with a family gathering.

On Sunday, Aug. 31, 1913, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Schwerten of the respective ages of 78 and 74 years, had seen a half century of married life together and a large company of relatives and friends enjoyed the privilege of assisting them in Celebrating this unusual occasion.

The bride was born Elizabeth Remano.  Both were born in Germany, and it was in the old country that they were married.  They came to Clark Co., Wis. In 1871 and have resided hereabouts in the towns of Lynn and Grant ever since.  They have but one child, Mrs. Herman Tiede, and five grandchildren, namely: Anna, Mrs. Gus. Garbush, Ida, Mrs. Ed Wiesner, Emma, Marguerite and Ewald Thiede, and three great-grandchildren, Elsie, Sadie and Margaret Garbisch, all of whom, with scores of the bride and groom’s close friends, were in attendance at this celebration.  A delicious repast was served at 6 o’clock p.m., to which all did ample justice and the goodbyes were said at an early evening hour.  The worth host and hostess were made the recipients of a choice lot of beautiful things, each article of which will long bear mute testimony of the occasion and be cherished and lasting mementoes for this beloved couple.

Mr. and Mrs. Fred Sears of the town of Levis are receiving the congratulations of their friends this week on the occasion of their golden wedding anniversary. In their honor a potluck dinner will be served Sunday at the Methodist church and a suitable program is being arranged by the pastor, the Rev. Floyd A. Fahlgren.

Verzilla Withers and Fred Sears were married on June 3, 1895, at Monticella, and they came to this county in 1901.

Mr. and Mrs. Sears are the parents of four children. Their daughter Lois has been a registered nurse for 18 years. For several years she has been a government nurse, and is now located at Oteen, N.C. Their eldest son, Verlyn, is with the dairy division in the department of agriculture at Madison, and lives on a farm near Mazomanie. He has two children. His wife is home economics teacher.

The second son, Thomas, has been an instructor in aviation the past two years, and is now in the U.S., after six months overseas in the Philippines. Before the war, he was an official with a telephone company in Colorado Springs and Denver, Colo. His wife and two children are living in St. Petersburg, Fla., while he is in service.

Roscoe, the youngest son, is associated with his parents in farming in the town of Levis.

Mr. and Mrs. Dale Seefeld of Route 1, Unity, were honored at a 25th wedding anniversary party Saturday evening at Babe and Anne’s Bar in Riplinger.

The highlight of ht evening was a mock wedding with the Seefeld’s children playing the roles. Debby was the groom, Barry the bride, Ronda and Brad the junior attendants and Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Timm the attendants. Ricky Edblom acted as minister.

40th Wedding Anniversary

Mr. and Mrs. Herman Seefeldt, Spencer route 1, celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary April 29th.

They are still living on their farm although they have retired from cheese making about 12 years ago. Their youngest son, Arnold, operates the farm.

Their marriage was blessed with three children, the daughter died in infancy. Their oldest son, Frank, lives in the Village of Spencer.

Relatives, neighbors and friends came to wish them many more years together. A very enjoyable evening was spent and everyone shared the joy of having Mr. and Mrs. Seefeldt with them all these years.

The record joins their many local friends in extending congratulations and best wishes for many more years of happy life together.

Last Friday, Nov. 9, 1917, was the fiftieth anniversary of the wedding of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Seeger of Abbotsford, Wis., and in honor of the event a number of neighbors and friends planned a little surprise party for them in the afternoon at their home. The afternoon was very pleasantly spent at cards, story telling and reminiscences of days gone by, and at 6 o'clock a bountiful dinner was served. Mr. and Mrs. Seeger are old and respected residents of this section and their many friends and acquaintances will all wish them a long continuance of good health and a happy wedded life.

A double celebration was held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. John Seibold Sunday evening, June 22, 1952. The occasion was the observance of their 25th wedding anniversary and their daughter Elaine's 17th birthday anniversary.

When lunch was served, a tiered wedding cake topped with a bell ornament centered the table.

Erma Vollrath and John Seibold were married June 22, 1927 at the home of her parents by Rev. Otto Vriesen.

Their other daughter, Jeanette, who is a Wave stationed at Washington, D.C., was unable to attend.

The honored couple received numerous gifts, a special gift being an interlocking diamond that was presented to Mrs. Seibold by her husband.

Relatives and friends attended the celebration of the 45th wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. John Seibold Thursday evening in the Legion Hall in Greenwood.

The party was a surprise hosted by their two daughters and their husband, Mr. and Mrs. Vernon (Jeanette) Lust of Greenwood and Mr. and Mrs. Robert (Elaine) Nichols of Tomah. There are nine grandchildren.

Erna Vollrath and John Seibold were married June 22, 1927, at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. F. W. Vollrath, in Greenwood. They have lived on their farm seven and one-half miles north of Greenwood ever since their marriage.

The evening was spent playing cards. A buffet lunch was served, including an anniversary cake baked by Mrs. Francis Kohlnhofer. Guests came from Florida, Tomah, Loyal and the surrounding area.

A large group of relatives and friends joined Mr. and Mrs. John Seif at their home in Neillsville Friday evening, January 16, for dinner and an evening of visiting in celebration of their fiftieth wedding anniversary.

Both Mr. and Mrs. Seif are lifelong residents of Clark County. Mrs. Seif was born in the Town of Weston. Mr. Seif was born in the Town of Sherwood. When he was four years old, he moved with his parents to what is known as the Town of Seif. The trip was made with oxen. Mr. Seif’s father, Fred Seif, was one of the first settlers in that area and because of his prominence in town affairs the township was named for him, as was the school now knows as the Worchel School.

Della Jacklin and John Seif were married in Neillsville on January 16, 1903, and went immediately to the home farm, where they lived for 46 years. Mr. Seif spent a total of 65 years on this one farm. He served 12 years as town chairman and held office as assessor and school treasurer for a number of years. They retired to Neillsville in 1947.

Mrs. Seif is 70, Mr. Seif 74. They have three children – Viola, Mrs. Lloyd Nelson of Foreston, Minn., Harley of Neillsville, and Robert, now on the Seif farm. There are seven grandchildren.

No celebration is planned, however, today, Mr. And Mrs. John Seif, 305 W. First St., Neillsville, Clark County, Wis., are looking back on 58 years of married life. The couple lives in the rear apartment of their two-story frame house, and the front portion is rented to a niece, Mrs. Gerelda Larson, and her daughter, Deon.

Mr. And Mrs. Seif were married in Neillsville by Justice of the Peace Arthur Dudley on Jan. 16, 1903, when much of the Neillsville area was first developing into a farming community.

They rented the home farm in the town of Seif for seven years, then purchased the farm from his father. That was their home until 14 years ago when they sold the farm to their youngest son, Robert, and then purchased their present home.

John Seif, the son of Fred and Mary Seif, was born Oct. 15, 1878, in the town of Sherwood, Clark County. However, the family moved to the town of Seif about four years later where his father cleared land and began farming. He was educated in the Worchel School.

Before his marriage Mr. Seif worked in the woods in the winter, and in sawmills during the summer. He recalls driving logs down Black River from the Medford area to Hatfield. This was done on foot and by boat. He talks of frequent times when for many days the crew was on the water, driving the logs toward La Crosse, and other sawmill locations where they were made into lumber.

The town of Seif, in which the family lived, was named after his father, Fred, who became the first chairman of that township. Later, John Seif was chairman of that township for some 1 years, and he also served as assessor of the town of Seif, school treasurer for 12 years, a member of the Clark County school committee, was a town board member, and was also president of the local Co-op Shipping Association.

Mr. Seif enjoys good health, and his hobbies, especially in earlier years, were hunting and fishing.

Mrs. Seif, the former Della Jacklin, was born July 28, 1882, in the town of Weston, Clark County, and was educated in that township. She did housework before her marriage, earning as much as $1.50 a week in wages. She had always enjoyed doing fancywork, but because of failing health in recent years, she has had to hold her activities to a minimum.

Both Mr. And Mrs. Seif are members of the United Church of Christ in Neillsville.

They have three children, Mrs. Lloyd (Viola) Nelson, Milaca, Minn.; Harley Seif, Milwaukee; and Robert, who operates the home farm in the town of Seif. They also have seven grandchildren.

The 58th wedding anniversary of Mr. an Mrs. John Seif will be observed next Monday at their home on West First Street.

John Seif, son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Seif, and Della Jacklin, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Jacklin, were married by Justice of Peace Arthur E. Dudley, at the Dudley home in Neillsville, January 16, 1903.  They were attended by David Seif and Mrs. Grace Seif.  The Seif and Jacklin families were pioneers of Clark County; the Seif’s giving the Town of Seif its name.

While a resident of the Town of Seif, Mr. Seif served 14 years as town chairman, two years as town assessor, and 12 years as treasure of Worchel School.  They moved to Neillsville in 1947, purchasing the former Sontag residence at 305 West First Street, which is their present home.

Three children were born to them: Mrs. Lloyd (Viola) Nelson of Milaca, Minn., Harley of Milwaukee, and Robert a third generation farmer operating the farm formerly managed by his father and grandfather.

Mr. Seif was one of seven brothers, who included Dave of Neillsville, Charles of La Crosse, and four, Frank, Will, Louis and Fred, are deceased; Louis was killed in World War I.

Chili--Mr. and Mrs. Fred Selk, residents of this community for 32 years, observed their golden wedding anniversary Thursday with a family dinner party at their home.

Table decorations included two wedding cakes and cut flowers, daffodils, yellow roses, and snapdragons. Gold colored streamers were used to give the room a festive air.

Fred Selk and Miss Minnie Knigge were married in Chicago on March 16, 1889, and lived on a farm about 40 miles south of Chicago until coming to Clark County, where they continued farming for several years before moving to Chili.

Mr. and Mrs. Selk have eight children; Mrs. A.J. (Minnie) Rab, Chicago; Mrs. Carl (Gertie) Luehrs, Mosinee; Mrs. Ben (Lena) Muir, Chili; Mrs. Walter (Luella) Deichsel, Marshfield; Mrs. William (Linda) Behling, Nasonville; August, Neillsville; George, Chili, and Charley, at home.

Attending the celebration were Mr. and Mrs. AJ Rab and family, Mr. and Mrs. August Selk and son, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Deischel and family, Mr. and Mrs. William Behling and family, Mr. and Mrs. Ben Muir and family, and Mr. and Mrs. George Selk and son.

Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Selves, former Neillsville residents, celebrated their golden wedding anniversary Sunday at their farm home between Alma Center and Black River Falls.

Mr. and Mrs. Selves were married June 23, 1915, in Neillsville. They lived for 12 years on a small farm west of Neillsville, now occupied by the Ray Reineck family. They moved to Neillsville in 1927, and later went to Madison where Mr. Selves was engaged in construction work.  Mr. and Mrs. Selves have resided at their present address since 1960.

Mr. and Mrs. Selves are the parents of six children: a son, Elliott of Chattanooga, Tenn.; and five daughters, Mrs. William (Mildred) Ormond of Milwaukee, Mrs. Neva Porath of Black River Falls, Mrs. Irene Kapusta of Neillsville, Mrs. Oscar (Vivian) Halle of Noblesville, Ind., and Mrs. James (Avis) Martin of Mukwonago.

The daughters spent the weekend with their parents, and Elliott arrived Sunday noon as a surprise to his parents.

Ten of their 18 grandchildren and their great-grandchild were present for the occasion.

Their attendants at the original wedding 50 years ago, Roy Snow and Ethel Randall, were unable to be present, due to a wedding in their family.

Wednesday, June 26, 1940, Mr. and Mrs. J.J. Servaty were honored by over 60 friends and relatives who spent the day with them at their home on Lake Namakagon, in observance of their golden wedding anniversary.

At noon a wonderfully delicious dinner was served to all of the guests on tables set up on the lawn. The tables were beautifully decorated with yellow roses and yellow lilies. At each guest’s place was an appropriate place card and individual rose. Mr. and Mrs. Servaty each wore flowers, Mrs. Servaty having a corsage of yellow roses and Mr. Servaty a yellow rose boutonniere. Before the guests were seated for the dinner the honored couple’s four grandsons offered the blessing.

Harry Hinkman of Shreveport, La., acted as toastmaster and during the meal asked various guests to speak a few appropriate remarks for the occasion. The couple was presented with a large purse of money from their friends and many other fine and lovely gifts. Many sincere and beautiful letters of congratulations were read that were received from friends and relatives who were unable to attend on this celebrated occasion. Following the dinner the entire group joined in singing some old time favorite songs.

Throughout the remainder of the day the guests amused themselves by visiting with one another and some found amusement in bathing, boating and fishing.

Mr. and Mrs. John Servaty were united in marriage at River Falls on June 26, 1890, and then made their home at Neillsville (Clark Co., Wis.) where they resided for ten years before moving to Withee (Clark Co.) in 1902. The couple made their home in Withee for five years before moving to Owen where they lived until 1935. While in Owen Mr. Servaty was affiliated with the John S. Owen Lumber Company and real estate sales.

Since 1935 they have made their home at Lake Namakagon. They are the parents of three children, two sons, Clare of Chicago, and Lynn of Shreveport, Ia.; and one daughter, Mrs. Herman (Madeline) Guemenden of La Crosse. The two sons, their wives, their daughter and husband, and five grandchildren were all present. The 40th wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Severson of Greenwood was celebrated Wednesday evening, Oct. 1, at the Asian Chinese American Restaurant in Waukesha. The event was hosted by their daughter and son-in-law, Roy and Carol Kaisler, Waukesha. Following the meal, a social hour was held.

Hugh Severson and Frieda Keiner were married in the Zion United Church of Christ in Greenwood. The Rev. E. G. Pfeifer officiated.

Hugh was born in Greenwood to Mr. and Mrs. Sam Severson. She was born in Athens to Mr. and Mrs. Christ Keiner. After their marriage, they lived in Wisconsin, Minnesota and Oregon, where he was employed as an electrician and lineman. In 1945, they returned to Greenwood, where he was employed by Clark Electric. They have resided here ever since. A daughter, Karen, is deceased.

From 40 to 45 friends and relatives gathered at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Ezra Scharratt in the town of Washburn June 5 to celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary.

The evening was spent in playing 500, with women’s prizes going to Mrs. Walter Larsen and Mrs. Clyde Oens; men’s prizes to Soren Larsen and William Adams; and the traveling prize going to Albert Schecklman of York. Refreshments were served.

Out-of-town friends present included Mr. and Mrs. Ray Dorst of Greenwood, and Miss Nellie Peters of Chili.

Residents of Clark County, and the town of Washburn for the last 32 years, Mr. and Mrs. Sharratt were united in marriage on June 5, 1900, at Fond du Lac, the childhood home of Mrs. Sharratt. She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Dyer, and was born in Fond du Lac January 24, 1874. Mr. Sharratt, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Sharratt, was born December 30, 1874, in El Dorado (Fond du Lac County).

Following their marriage the couple moved to Marshall, Minn., where they remained eight years before locating in Washburn Township, Clark County.

Mr. Sharratt served for a number of years as Clerk of the town, and was chairman of the town for one term. Mrs. Sharratt is a charter member of the Cannonville Ladies’ Aid society, and last year was made an honorary member of the society.

The couple has five children and four grandchildren. The children are: Roland, at home; Francis, Des Moines, Ia.; Valera, Chicago; Gordon, Neillsville; and Mrs. Genevieve Schecklman, town of York.

The grandchildren are; Anna Jane, Billy and Jackie Sharratt, children of Mr. and Mrs. Francis Sharratt; and Mercedes Sharratt, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Sharratt. Francis and Valera were unable to attend the celebration.

Mr. and Mrs. George Shattuck were pleasantly surprised on Saturday evening, Nov. 13, 1965, when their three sons gave them a surprise party for their 25th wedding anniversary.

The table was beautifully decorated with a two tier wedding cake, silver candles and doilies.

The centerpiece was a jello salad surrounded by frosted grapes, very pretty, made by Mrs. Lloyd Vickers, a sister-in-law to Mrs. Shattucks. They received many lovely gifts, including a television set from their sons.

Guests were from Minneapolis, Curtiss, Owen, Withee and Longwood. They were happy to have their son, Dale, home with them, who is in the air force and is stationed at Tinker Air Force Base in Oklahoma City.

SHAWS WERE 50 YEARS WEDDED

On Thursday evening, April 15, occurred one of the happiest events of the year, when Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Shaw were pleasantly surprised at the home of their son, L. Shaw, in honor of their golden wedding. The home was beautifully decorated in gold and white and yellow jonquils.

A pleasant social evening was spent, a charivari being part of the program, after which a bounteous supper was served to nearly one hundred guests.

Numerous gifts and ten dollars in cash was received from friends in this vicinity, and also gifts from friends in Oregon. Their children and grandchildren presented them with sixty dollars in gold.

Those from away were: Mrs. E. Tucker and son Laverne, Mr. and Mrs. Albert Neis and son Devere, all of Lodi, Wis.; Mr. Tucker and his daughter-in-law and son, Gordon who were unable to attend the wedding came to spend the weekend. Tow other grandsons, Chas. Tucker and Shirley Neis also unable to attend, sent gifts and flowers.

Charles Shaw and Amanda Butterfield were married at Neillsville, April 15, 1876, and lived for a short time at the home of her father, Joseph Butterfield. Mr. Shaw had purchased eighty acres of land, and began clearing at once having four acres seeded to oats that spring. In the late summer he built a house on the land, and in September moved into his new home, which he has since developed into a beautiful farm.

Four children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Shaw, Linwood of Christie; Anna, Mrs. E. H. Tucker of Lodi; Mildred, Mrs. Albert Neis of Lodi; one child dying in infancy. They have six grandsons, Ray and Everett Shaw; Devere and Shirley Neis; Charles and Laverne Tucker and one great grandson, Gordon Tucker.

Mr. and Mrs. Shaw are in the best of health and still actively engaged in farming.

Charles Henry Shaw was born on 27 April 1853 in the Town of Plymouth, Sheboygan County, Wisconsin, the third child of Joseph Shaw and his wife Jane Courter. Research show that his parents were born and raised in Morris County, New Jersey and married there in the Town of Pequannock on April 28, 1847. Migration to Wisconsin occurred 1848. Accompanying Joseph and Jane (Courter) Shaw were her parents Cornelius and Elizabeth Courter, plus her brother James Courter and his wife Maria (Davenport) Courter and their two young sons, George and William. The father, Joseph Shaw enrolled on 31 August 1861 as a private in Co. B--8th Wisconsin Volunteers. He contracted Typhoid Fever during military service and died on 12 March 1862 near Sikestown, Missouri. Charles Henry Shaw and his 2 living siblings were completely orphaned when their mother died of peritonitis on November 24, 1869. At this time a guardian (Enos Eastman) was appointed to monitor the children and their estate until they reached 21 years of age. Charles, his brother Samuel, sister Annie, Uncle James Courter, and cousins George, Nels, and Mary Elizabeth Courter, left Sheboygan County and settled in Clark County in the 1870's.

Friends of Mr. and Mrs. George Shaw, about 125 in number, gave them a surprise dancing party at Moose Hall Sunday evening in observance of their Silver Wedding Anniversary. Lunch was served at midnight with a beautiful four layer wedding cake gracing the table. The bride and groom were presented with a collection of silver coins. One of the entertaining features of the evening was a waltz by Mr. and Mrs. Shaw, their sons, Clarence, Robert and George, Jr., and daughter Edna, joined in comprising the orchestra, playing, "A Bicycle Built for Two," Edna and Robert singing the chorus. Their son, Louis of Milwaukee was unable to be present.

Shaw, Mr. and Mrs. George (Golden - 25 February 1964)

Mr. and Mrs. George Shaw of Neillsville will observe their golden wedding anniversary with an open house Saturday evening in the American Legion Memorial Hall.

The open house will be preceded by a dinner there at 6:30 p.m. for a few friends and relatives. Those who wish to extend their best wishes may do so during the evening hours.

The Shaws were married in Neillsville on February 25, 1914, in the parsonage of the Reformed Church, which was then located on the present site of the James A. Musil home on State Street. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. H. G. Schmid.

They have made their home in Neillsville throughout their married life.

Mr. Shaw was born in Oconomowoc 68 years ago, and came to Neillsville with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jerome Shaw, when he was a boy of four.  His father is still living, and presently is in Sunset Nursing Home in Fairchild. He attended grade school and then started working with his father.  One of his early jobs was that of operating a steam engine owned by his father.  For most of his life, Mr. Shaw has worked in dairy plants of the area.  He continues to be active by assisting his son, Robert Shaw, as the need arises, doing maintenance work for the United Church, of which he is a member, and assisting with other work as he is called.

Mrs. Shaw is a native of Clark County. She was born Clara Wedekind in the Town of Grant, and attended school there.  She is widely known as a cook, and for several years worked on the lunch staff at Neillsville High School. At present she assists with the weekly preparation of the meal for the Kiwanis Club.

Asked the inevitable question, "What advice do you have for young people getting married today," the Shaws agreed that attitude is the most important single factor in making a marriage work. "They have to be determined to make it work," they asserted.  Both expressed the opinion that ‘easy divorces of today" are not helpful.

The Shaws have four living children and 12 grandchildren. The children are: Louis, manager of the Nelson Muffler Corporation plant at Black River Falls; Clarence of Milwaukee; Robert of Neillsville; and Mrs. Richard (Edna) Lowe of Kansas City, Mo. A son George Edward, died 25 years ago at the age of 11 ½.

The home of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Schefchik was the scene of a Golden Wedding Nov. 18th, the celebration being in honor of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Shefchik’s 50th wedding anniversary. Wedding dinner and supper was served and the evening spent pleasantly, cards being the diversion. The house was appropriately decorated in gold.

Those presents included the Rev. Father Joseph F. Stenz; sister Leo Mitis O.S.S. Order of St. Francis at St. Joseph’s Convent in Milwaukee (daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Shefchik); Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Bauer, ( Mrs. Bauer is also a daughter); Mr. and Mrs. Emil Shefchik and family; Charles Shefchik; Frank and Albert Shefchik of Milwaukee ( Emil Charles, Joe, Frank, and Albert are sons of Mr. and Mrs. Shefchik); and Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Renz. Three daughters, Mrs. Frank Kadow of Milwaukee, Mrs. Tom Kunesh of Stangeville, and Mrs. Matt Qvitek of Manitowoc were unable to attend the celebration.

Mr. and Mrs. Shefchik have one daughter in the Great Beyond, Mrs. Frank Hushek who passed on two years ago. They have ten children living, 32 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.

Walter “Bill” Sheffer and Dolores “Dolly” Thompson were married June 24, 1944, at Trinity Lutheran Church in La Crosse. The couple moved from La Crosse to Humbird, where Bill was a janitor and school bus driver for the Alma Center-Humbird-Merrillan School District.  He later was employed at the Nelson Muffler Plant in Neillsville, retiring in 1986. Dolly worked at the Nelson Filter Plant in Neillsville, retiring in 1988.

Family and friends gathered at the Stanley Church of the Brethren on Sunday afternoon, June 25, 1972, to celebrate the Golden Wedding Anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. M. R. Shock of Stanley.

Attending morning worship at the Church of the Brethren with the couple were their children, Mrs. Albert R. Wayne, Mr. and Mrs. W. Dean Shock, James A. Shock, and Dr. Norman R. Shock. Seven of their ten grandchildren, and Mrs. Fred Mitchell, attendant of fifty years ago, were also present.

The reception buffet table was centered with a four tiered cake adorned with yellow and gold roses, and topped with the golden wedding bell. Mrs. Sig Sneen poured the coffee, Miss Kim Shock presided at the punch bowl, Miss Loren Wayne, Miss Dana Salander served cake, and Miss Jill Shock was in charge of the guests book.

An informal program was presented, with Anton Long and Mrs. Fred Mitchell performing an amusing and nostalgic skit in their inimitable manner. Dr. Norman Shock and Mr.s Mitchell also sang several old and loved hymns, with piano accompaniment by Mrs. Hazel Miles. A clarinet solo was contributed by Miss Jill Shock. The Shocks will long remember the enjoyable time of visiting with friends and family.

Friday, April 15, marked the 25th wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Ed Short of the town of Washburn, and that evening about 75 of their friends, neighbors and relatives gathered at the town hall and gave them a genuine surprise, all arrangements for a silver wedding having been made before Mr. and Mrs. Short were invited to the hall.

The hours were pleasantly spent in singing and visiting, a mock wedding also forming one of the enjoyable features of the evening, and the guests of honor were presented with a collection of silver.

At 11 o’clock a fine plate lunch was served. A beautiful three-layer wedding cake, topped with a silver bell and baked by Mrs. Arthur Short, was placed upon a small table on the stage and at dessert time the "bride" was asked to cut the cake while the "groom" passed it to the guests.

Mr. and Mrs. Short are well known and highly respected citizens. They spent the greater, part of their lives in the town of Washburn, Mrs. Short coming to that community as a small child from Wadena, Minn. Mr. Short was born and reared there. They were married 25 years ago at the James Carter homestead, Rev. Richard Prescott of the Presbyterian church officiating. They have one son, Ernest, who lives at home.

The many friends of Mr. and Mrs. Short wish them years of continued happiness and success.

Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Short were honored supper guests at the Frank Short home last week Tuesday evening in honor of their thirty-eighth wedding anniversary.

About 40 relatives and close friends helped Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Short celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary Thursday night, March 26, at their home. 

The guests brought food and a lunch was served later in the evening. The evening was spent visiting.

Mrs. Art Short made a large three-tiered anniversary cake, beautifully decorated for the occasion.  Mrs. Bernard Kuhn also brought a large cake with 40 candles as part of the decoration; and Mrs. Irving Stevens brought a beautifully decorated cake also.

The couple was presented with anniversary cards and gifts of money in memory of the occasion.

Edith Kegley and Ralph Short were married at the home of Mrs. Short’s father, Albert Kegley, March 26, 1919, with Rev. H. M. Roberts, who was the pastor of the Neillsville and Shortville Presbyterian Churches, officiating. They were attended by Gladys Winters (now Mrs, Irving Stevens) and Rev. Vern Kegley (deceased), brother of the bride.

The Shorts have one daughter, Mrs. Don Stewart of Verona.  They also have three grandchildren.

Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Short spent Easter weekend with their son-in-law and daughter, and Mr. and Mrs. Don Stewart and family, and Mrs. Edna Stewart. The Shorts were honor guests on Easter Sunday of the Stewarts at an anniversary dinner and supper at their home in honor of their 40th anniversary.  Other dinner and supper guests were: Mr. and Mrs. Walter Bell, Mr. and Mrs. Leland Bill and daughters, Judy, Joyce and Jean and son, Jerry, Mr. and Mrs. Bruce Bell and daughters, Linda and Kathy, all of Janesville; Dr. and Mrs. Lyle Stewart and daughters, Kathy and Carol, and son, Tommy, and Mrs. Bertha Pitel, Middleton; Mr. and Mrs. Amos Kegley, Lake Beulah and John Lyle, Verona.

An anniversary cake of white, decorated with yellow and green was the table centerpiece, with other yellow and green table decorations.

The couple was presented with several gifts.

Mr. and Mrs. Horace Rodman stayed at the Short home during their absence.

Approximately 135 friends and well-wishers Saturday afternoon attended an open house in the United Church of Christ in Neillsville held in honor of the Golden wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Short of the Town of Washburn.

The Shorts, widely known in Clark County, were married March 26, 1919, in the home of Mrs. Short’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Albert Kegley. The home is the one in which the David Krutsch family now lives. Presiding was the late Rev. Harold M. Roberts, a Presbyterian minister from Neillsville, who also conducted services in a Presbyterian Church which then existed in Shortville.

One of the couple’s attendants was present for the open house. She is Mrs. Irving (Gladys Winters) Stevens, who still lives in the Shortville area. The other, was the late Rev. Verne Kegley, a brother of Mrs. Short. Also present was one of Mrs. Short’s sisters, Mrs. Louis Olson of Hillsboro. Another sister, Mrs. William Lodge of Madison, was unable to attend.

Mrs. Short, was born March 9, 1896, in Hillsboro, and moved with her parents, two sisters and three brothers, to Shortville in 1917. A correspondent for The Clark County Press and its predecessors for the last 52 years Mrs. Short has faithfully chronicled the news of people and events of that area over the years. She had started as a correspondent for the Hillsboro newspaper when she lived there, adding another four years to the service she has rendered to the communities in which she has lived.

She is a member of the Ladies Aid of the United Church and of the Washburn Homemakers club, and has held offices in both.

Mr. Short was born July 5, 1888, in the house in which the couple has spent its married life. He is the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Short, one of five Short brothers who came into this area together and who were influential pioneers of Clark County. Mr. Short’s father was the first postmaster at Shortville, and conducted the postoffice in his home, a log house which since has disappeared from the scene. The Shortville postoffice was discontinued from 60 to 65 years ago, according to Mr. Short’s recollection.

Mr. Short, also, has been active in civic affairs though out his life. He served as secretary of the Mystic Workers Lodge, now the Fidelity Life Association. At one time the Shortville lodge had 165 members. He also served four years as chairman of the Town of Washburn; last week concluded 26 years of service as clerk of the township; served for 27 years as secretary of the old Shortville Cheese Factory, which was owned by farmers of the area; was vice chairman of the Clark County (the balance of this man’s history is missing here.)  

Shortess, Mr./Mrs. Jack (Gold – 24 Jun 1979)

On Sunday, June 24, 1979, Mr. and Mrs. Jack Shortess, 1341 W. Business Highway 83, Alamo, Texas, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary at the Labor Temple in Marshfield. Special guests attending were seven brothers and sisters of wife, sister of husband, their children and grandchildren.

A prayer was given by the bride’s nephew, Don Decker of Greenwood, and comments were made by Don Decker and the couple’s three children. Mrs. Shortess had a corsage of white roses with daisies and stephanotis, with bold leaves and a gold ribbon. Mr. Shortess had a boutonniere of white roses and gold leaves and a gold ribbon.

Mr. Shortess attended school in the Chicago, Illinois area, and Mrs. Shortess attended the Greenwood school. They were married June 24, 1929 at Greenwood. They have three children, Richard Shortess, Racine, Shirley (Shortess) Klaar, Racine, and Larry Shortess, Marshfield. They have eight grandchildren.

Mr. Shortess is engaged in farming and Mrs. Shortess is a housewife. His hobbies are fishing, and hers are reading and sewing. 

Schumacher, Mr./Mrs. Peter (40th Anniv. - 22 Nov. 1956)

The Lawrence Weber home in the town of Colby was the scene of a family gathering on Thanksgiving Day in honor of Mrs. Weber’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Peter Schumacher of Dorchester, Wisconsin, who marked their 40th wedding anniversary.

Joining with them in the observance were their six children and their families - Melvin and Robert Schumacher and Mrs. Bryce (Marlene) Hinke of Dorchester, Mrs. Lawrence (Verna) Weber of Colby, Mrs. Leo (Agnes) Zirngibl of Medford and Mrs. Gordon (Celia) Johnson of Pennsylvania.

Their marriage was performed in St. Louis Catholic church at Dorchester on November 22, 1916. Following their marriage, the Schumachers lived for two years in the town of Mayville where Mr. Schumacher operated a cheese factory. In 1918, they moved onto a farm in the town of Little Black, near Dorchester, where they have since resided.

Shute's Golden Wedding

A very enjoyable celebration was observed at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Frank A. Shute, in Altoona, Sunday, June 16, the occasion being the 50th wedding anniversary. The house was beautifully decorated with bouquets of lovely flowers, which were the gifts of friends. A family dinner was served at 1 o'clock to 50 guests. A social afternoon was enjoyed with the bride and groom, reminiscing of many happy events through their wedded life of half a century. Open house was held to their many friends from 4 to 8 o'clock. All enjoyed listening to the strains of "Put on Your Old Gray Bonnet," "Let Me Call You Sweetheart," and other appropriate numbers sung by Messrs. Bonell and Peterson, a very fitting closing to a most happy day. Mrs. Bertha Stallard and Miss Alice Fowler attended the anniversary.

Frank Shute and Mabel Stallard were married at the Stallard home in Humbird, on June 16, 1896. Altoona later became their home, and after Mr. Stallard retired from the railroad, they engaged in the mercantile business. Returning to Humbird to take over the Stallard store, they purchased the house in which they were wed, (now occupied by Edwin Harris and family) and it was their home for a number of years. When the store business was sold to A. W. Short in 1920, Mr. and Mrs. Shute resumed their residence in Altoona, where they are enjoying the sunset years of life.

Anniversary dinner for relatives and close friends was held Sunday at the Frank Simek home honoring Mr. and Mrs. Frank Simek on their 50th wedding anniversary.  Open house followed from 2 to 5 p.m., with many neighbors and friends calling to wish the honored couple happiness.

Mr. Simek was born January 18, 1889, in Chicago, the son of James and Theresa Simek. He attended Chicago schools and at the age of 17 became an apprentice to a plumber.  Later, he changed his mind about his future work and became an apprentice in painting, a trade he followed for many years in this area.

Mrs. Simek, the former Mary Storek, was born in Czechoslovakia and came with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Storek to America when she was 10 years old. The family located in Chicago and on May 11, 1913, Frank Simek and Mary Storek were married in St. Michael’s Catholic Church.  Their attendants were Frank Storek, brother of Mrs. Simek, and Annette Peterson of Chicago.

Mr. and Mrs. Simek came to this area in October, 1919, and located on a farm in the Town of York. They later moved to Neillsville.

Mrs. Simek, active in her home work also is an active member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church being a member of the Catholic Women.  Mr. Simek belongs to its holy Name Society.

Mr. and Mrs. Simek are the parents of a son, William, of Neillsville, who assists his father in the painting business; and a daughter, Mrs. Harold (Mildred) Gault of Wausau.

Among those present for the occasion were Mr. and Mrs. Harold Gault and son of Wausau; Mr. and Mrs. William Simek and sons, Neillsville; Mrs. Ann Ruda, Mrs. Barbara Lehner and Mano Simek, Mr. and Mrs. John Horn and sons, and Annette Peterson, all of Chicago; and Mrs. Helen Storek of Neillsville.
