EDENS OF YORK OBSERVE THEIR 50TH ANNIVERSARY
Pioneers Settlers Traded Home for Stake in a New Land
The town of York, in which Mr. and Mrs. William H. Edens celebrated their golden wedding anniversary, last Sunday, was a far different community from the York in which they settled 40 years ago, come May 10.
Woodlands have been transformed into pastures and fields by sweat of the brow and bite of the axe. The industry of the countryside has changed in the 40 years that passed, from that of lumbering to farming.
Yet, somehow, the spirit of hardy early settlers of Clark County - the spirit which has typified pioneer Americans - was not lost on the anniversary celebration.
While scores of friends and neighbors joined the children and grandchildren of Mr. and Mrs. Edens for the occasion, the old couple looked back on their early trials in a new country. And they were able to smile on their recollections.
Nearly all of York was woodland when the Edens settled there with their children, in 1900. They moved from Plymouth, where Mr. Edens had been a shipping clerk. With typical pioneering spirit, they had traded their Plymouth home for their three almost virgin York 40’s. And there was a peculiar thing about their trade, as Mr. Edens recalled it:
The land came to a war veteran, one Mr. Corbett, who had a cork leg and taught Mr. Edens’ Sunday school class. He acquired the land through a gambling debt.
When the Edens arrived, they found their 40 in woods, with the exception of an area of about three acres, which had been cut, but had not been stumped. That spring Mr. Edens had furrows plowed between the stumps, and planted corn. The yield was 70 bushels.
Working side by side, Mr. and Mrs. Edens started clearing their land. And whenever it came to using a two-handled saw, Mrs. Edens was there doing her share of the pulling and pushing.
"I don’t recall which end she used," Mr. Edens remarked; "but it doesn’t make much difference. One end pulled as hard as the other."
The children, too, came in for their share of labor in building up the farm and the home. Like all children of early Clark County families, they learned to work, and they worked hard.
At that time York Center consisted of a post office operated, in connection with a country store, by A. Benedict. The post office-store was located on the site of the present Abie Turner service station. Besides the post office, the Edens had six "near" neighbors. They were; Mrs. Stella Mortimer, whose place her son, George, now works; Clyde Smith on the farm now owned by Mrs. Julius Drescher; Mr. and Mrs. Walter Dean, who later went to Oregon, where they died; Mr. and Mrs. Fred wick, now the Emil Korth farm; Mr. and Mrs. Julius Voight, who lived on the place now operated by their son, Hank; and Mr. and Mrs. Al Garvin, who lived where Elmer Garbisch now resides.
There was a photo with this announcement, but the copy was to dark. Caption of from underneath of photo:

Mr. and Mrs. Jens Andersen celebrated the fiftieth anniversary of their marriage on Saturday, April 26, 1924.
Jens Andersen and Nielsine Hansen were married in Denmark on April 26, 1874 and sailed immediately for the U. S. and landed in New York May 25. From there they went to Washington Island, Wis., arriving there on June 1, 1874. It was then a primitive forest with but few inhabitants, most of who were fishermen. Mr. Andersen was a blacksmith by trade and followed his profession there for 22 years, during which time he also cleared a fine farm.
In 1869 they moved to this city (Owen, Clark County, Wis.), arriving her on Sept. 30th. They settled on a wild piece of land 3 1/4 miles northwest of the village, which by dint of hard work and perseverance, they converted into one of the finest farms in that vicinity. In 1910 Mr. Andersen took his son Hans into partnership with him and in 1919 he sold him the other half interest, having decided to retire. But his son lived only one year after that, so Mr. Andersen again took up the burden of farm management for his son's widow, and is still doing active service in that capacity.
Mr. Andersen is 75 years and Mrs. Andersen is 76 years of age, both are strong and active for their years.
The Danish Lutheran Congregation took charge of the festivities and they entertained most royally. There was a very impressive service at the Danish Lutheran Church at 11 o'clock A.M., after which they all gathered at the assembly hall, where a sumptuous dinner was served by the ladies and the young peoples society, to about 175 guests. About 2 o'clock a very nice program was rendered by the children and young people, and several songs were sung by the congregation. Amongst them was one written especially for the occasion by Jorgen Nielsen, which was very appropriate. At 3 o'clock a delicious lunch was served, consisting of cake, cookies, ice cream and coffee.
They were presented with two very comfortable rocking chairs, a beautiful cut glass vase filled with red and white carnations and one-half dozen silver teaspoons, by the congregations, which was a mute testimony of the high esteem in which they are held.
They have reared twelve children. Two of them died in infancy, but they adopted 2 others in their places. Five daughters and one adopted son came to attend the wedding: Mrs. Christ Nelson of Washington Island, Wis.; Mrs. Elmer Cornell of Chicago; Mr. and Mrs. Soren Madsen of Menomonie, Mich.; Mr. and Mrs. N. L. Nielsen of Racine, Wis.; Mr. and Mrs. Walter Christensen of Marinette, Wis., and Carl M. Andersen of Chicago, also some cousins of Mr. Andersen's: Mr. and Mrs. Christ Jorgensen of Hutchinson, Minn.; Mr. and Mrs. Simon Jorgensen and Peter Jorgensen, all of who join the Lutheran Congregations in extending congratulations and best wishes for many more years of happiness together.
A reception was held at their home on Sunday, April 27th, and they were the recipients of many beautiful and useful gifts.
