International Seniors Workshops in Jelenia Góra

13-17 May 2019 was a perfect time for meeting of three cultures in one place. The Italian, Spanish and  Polish seniors, who are the students of universities and academy of the third age, met in Jelenia Góra to look for common cultural roots. However, before coming to the Karkonosze Mountains, they agreed on the areas they were going to discuss and present. They communicated via Skype and Whatsapp. Together with their coaches they chose music which soothes manners. They focused on opera and dance. The participants of the project had been preparing for the meeting for several months by creating multimedia presentations, learning to sing and dance. The senior environment was full of excitement in each town: Milazzo, Cuenca and Jelenia Góra. Not only seniors themselves were engaged but also thier coaches, ICT and English teachers since English was the language of intenational communication. Libraries, concert halls, music schools and museums were full of seniors from the three countries  sarching for similarities and differences between the cultures. The truth appeared in all its glory: the Italians are the masters of opera, The Spanish are experts in dance and the Polish are best in hospitality.

Common listening and singing

We look for common roots:

We listen to opera arias sung by the students of music school and we learn popular songs in our partners mother tongue. It appears that Polish is the most difficult but there no things we can't cope with. The final touch is the concert of Elwira Kozak in an atmospheric concert hall in the Nature Museum.

We sing songs, which are very well-known for everybody e.g. „Panie Janie” „Brother John” „Fra Martino” or „Fray Santiago”. It is a canon which sounds uniquely sung in four different languages at the same time. We are encouraged to sing by a band form the III LO (a high school from Jelenia Góra).

Common dancing

We  dance – On the first day of the workshops we watch oriental and Spanish dance show of the Hayat band from Jelenia Góra. It is just the beginning because the workshop of folk dances and the common performance of polonaise will encourage the Spanish couple to present a vivid Andalusian dance. Fortunately, no one came up with an idea to dance „oberek”, which requires a lot of strength from the female partner and our female seniors were really tired with the all day long workshop activities.

Common discussing about music

We learn – all the participants had very well preapared presentations about music, their organisations, towns, countries and passions. We also take part in the presentations of cultural facilities of Jelenia Góra – Książnica Karkonoska (a public library), Nature Museum and JCK (a cultural centre).

We learn English every day and we also compare our own languages. It is easier for the Spanish and the Italian since the common roots make it easier to understand the other language. Fortunately, the Polish are willing to learn and remember quickly the words needed in small talks.

The last day is spent on IT workshops where we prepare the report of the meeting. We will need it to share with the students form the third age univeristies and academy in Milazzo, Cuenca and Jelenia Góra.

We visit, learn, taste – People don't live by work alone, especially when they are retired. The workshop participants try the taste of some Polish dishes (pierogi, steak, sourkraut and pickles). The guests brought some Sicilian and Castilian specialties. We tried the simple dishes as well as some more sophisticated during our trip over the Valley of Gardens and Palaces. Visiting Cieplice can't go without bathing in hot mineral springs and the walk in the park. Before leaving Poland – one more look at Wrocław. It is the time of good bye. We will meet again, during the workshops in Milazzo. But for now the Internet communicators will be used daily and English books will be most often used items at home.
