Now that you've completed your research and conducted your science/engineering experiment, it is time to put all your information on a Project Board. The Science Fair judges will review your project board on Friday morning, March 14th. Your interview with the judges will be in the afternoon between 12:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. in the gymnasium at Los Medanos College.
Project board size: 36 inches wide, 30 inches deep, no more than 108 inches high. (The video below says 48 inches wide; this is not correct.)
You will have one half of a six-foot table for your space. The boards that measure 48 inches wide will fit because you will not open it up all the way. If you did, it would fall over. You angle the sides so that it stands up and therefore it fits into a 36-inch space.
Fonts on the boards should be 18 point or larger.
Use a white or very light background with black or very dark font. Except for photo credits, don’t use a font smaller than 18 point.
If you use pictures, graphs, or charts, make sure they are relevant to your project, help you tell your story, and are clear and easy to understand.
Check your spelling! Yes, it’s important!
Required information to include on your project board:
Project Title
The Question
Your Hypothesis
Research, notes or project background
List of materials (may not be needed for Behavioral and Math/CS projects)
Procedure, list of steps
Project results, including data
Conclusion
Bibliography/Information sources
Photo credit(s), graphic/artwork credit (see below for details)
The following are NOT allowed on your project board:
Abstract
Names (do not include names of students, parents, teachers, mentors, school or anyone involved in your project.)
Scroll to bottom of this page for a more comprehensive list of items which are not allowed on your project board or to be part of your display.
Other Optional Materials you may want to include when you set up your Project Board:
Lab Notebook
Although not required, you may bring a lab notebook to provide evidence of its use.
Research paper
While not required, you may bring your research paper with your project board. Judges are not required to read the research paper, although it will be available to them.
You are discouraged from bringing electronic devices and equipment that draws judges attention away from the student themselves. Judges have a short period of time to interview students, and distracting judges with viewing computer screens takes valuable time away from judges learning directly from student(s) about their research, their discoveries, and the importance of their work to society.
No electricity will be available at the project board station.
Photographs on your project board
Photographs other than that of the finalist must have a photo release signed by the subject, and if the subject is under 18 years of age, also signed by the parent/guardian of the subject. Any photograph displayed on the project board must have a credit line underneath it, for example: “Photograph taken by…” or “Image taken from…” or “Graph/Chart/Table taken from…” If all images displayed were taken by or created by the student or are from the same source, one credit line prominently displayed on the poster board is sufficient, saying: “All photographs taken by participant.” Remember, you are not allowed to use your name!
The following are NOT allowed as part of your display:
No living organisms, including plants.
No soil, sand, rock, cement and/or waste samples, even if permanently encased in a slab of acrylic
No taxidermy specimens or parts.
No preserved vertebrate or invertebrate animals.
No human or animal food as part of the demonstration of the project.
No human/animal parts or body fluids (for example: blood or urine.)
No plant materials (living, dead, or preserved) that are in their raw, unprocessed, or non-manufactured state. (Exception: manufactured construction materials used in building the project or display.)
No water or chemicals are allowed.
No poisons, drugs, firearms, weapons, ammunition, reloading devices, or lasers.
No items that may have contained or been in contact with hazardous chemicals.
No dry ice or other sublimating solids.
No sharp items (for example, syringes, needs, pipettes, knives.)
No flames or highly flammable materials.
No glass or glass objects. (Exception: lap top screen.)
No apparatus deemed unsafe by the Display & Safety Committee.
