Summary: This 3 hour introduction course will serve as a primer to living shorelines. Students will learn about existing natural shoreline stabilization techniques currently used throughout coastal North Carolina. This course will provide an overview for different types of living shoreline projects using case studies and current research. The course will familiarize students with effective stabilization options and considerations, as well as an overview of the permitting process required to install living shorelines in North Carolina coastal waters. Students will walk away having a basic of understanding of how to design, permit and install a living shoreline.

Audience: Marine contractors, property owners, realtors, local government personnel, planning consultants.
Summary: This 7 week Living Shoreline Academy course is a comprehensive look at living shorelines. The course is aimed towards waterfront property managers, property owners, landscapers, marine contractors, engineers and anyone looking for alternative methods of building shoreline resiliency. Students will learn:
How to analyze shoreline conditions and conduct site assessments.
Design a living shoreline and material selection.
How to permit living shorelines.
Construction techniques and logistics planning.
Native plants which thrive in the saltwater marshes, tidal zones and upland areas of coastal North Carolina.
The class will also include up to three off-campus trips to view and potentially assist with projects under construction. Location and dates of the trips are to be determined.
