Professor Byoung Seon Choi

History
ByoungSeon Choi is a professor in the Department of Economics and Graduate School of Data Science at Seoul National University.
He was born in Seoul, Korea and received his B.S. degree with Honors in Mathematics from Seoul National University in 1977. He also received his A.M. degree in Economics, M.S. degree in Statistics, and Ph.D. degree in Statistics and Economics from Stanford University all in 1983.
He previously served as a professor at the Department of Applied Statistics of Yonsei University and was a visiting professor/scholar at Stanford University, the University of Tokyo, the University of California at Santa Barbara, the University of California at San Diego, the University of California at Irvine, and the University of California at Berkeley.
He has authored 30 books, including ARMA Model Identification, and 90 papers. His interests lie within broad Applied Mathematics including Data sciences, Financial engineering, Scientific computing, Information theory, Signal and image processing, Finance, Economics, Physics, Probability and Statistics.
Note to students: He retired in 2020 and is no longer taking on graduate students. However, he continues to teach at the Graduate School of Data Science at SNU. A list of the courses he teaches can be found here.
Mathematical Genealogy
He is the 10-th generation direct academic descendant of
Johann Carl Friedrich Gauß.
