Dr. McGreevy is Director of the Wildlife Genetics and Ecology Laboratory at the University of Rhode Island. His lab works on New England Cottontail conservation project. This project's main goal, in collaboration with other research teams, is to preserve this species that has been out-competed for resources and habitat by the Eastern Cottontail.
In Dr. McGreevy's lab, fecal matter is used to determine the distribution of the New England Cottontail. DNA is extracted from the fecal samples collected through the collection season (throughout the winter). This DNA is then sequenced and characterized to identify the species (whether the fecal sample belongs to the New England Cottontail or another species) and if and how the distribution in the testing area has been affected. There is also some field work incorporated in this lab.
This conservation project utilizes many techniques, such as
DNA extraction (using the rabbit fecal matter as sample)
including Polymerase Chain Reactions, or PCR
DNA sequencing
Previous experience in research is not required for this lab, however an interest in conservation and genetics is desired.
