Trends Shaping Education examines major trends affecting the future of education and sets the background on upcoming challenges for policy makers and education providers alike. This work does not give conclusive answers: it is not an analytical report nor is it a statistical compendium, and it is certainly not a statement of OECD policy on these different developments. It is instead a stimulus for thinking about major tendencies that have the potential to influence education, and conversely, the potential of education to influence these trends.

This interactive set of dashboards describe trends through 2021 in late-life functioning of the US Medicare population ages 72 and older. The dashboards are designed to facilitate understanding of how daily life is changing for older adults as the US population ages. Data are from the National Health and Aging Trends Study (NHATS).

Users may view trends for the overall Medicare population ages 72 and older or by various demographic groups. Dashboards below (except End of Life) exclude nursing home residents. See dashboards that include nursing home residents for a subset of outcomes.

Begun in 2011, NHATS fosters research to guide efforts to reduce disability, maximize health and independent functioning, and enhance quality of life at older ages. NHATS was designed to provide the basis for understanding trends in late-life functioning, how these differ for various subgroups, and the economic and social consequences of aging and disability for individuals, families, and society.

NHATS gathers annual, in-person information on a nationally representative sample of Medicare beneficiaries ages 65 and older. The sample is refreshed periodically in order to support study of national-level disability trends. Caregivers of NHATS respondents are interviewed in the supplemental National Study of Caregiving (NSOC).

State economic, demographic, and social trends are related to one another and, in turn, affect government policies on spending and taxation. A strong economy, for example, attracts more people to the state, which in turn boosts state tax collections. At the same time, however, increases in population also put additional pressure on such areas of state responsibility as public schools, prisons, and social services. Social developments, such as crime rates and the incidence of teenage pregnancies, also contribute to demands on public resources. The purpose of Washington Trends is to chart these elements which shape public and private life in Washington.

This report highlights advances in cancer therapeutics, including the use of these drugs and their global spending trends, the pipeline of therapeutic innovation and associated clinical trial activity, and the outlook through 2022. The report aims to provide an evidence base that can be used in discussion about the broader implications for cancer patients and their families, providers and their institutions, public and private payers at the local and national level, as well as multinational organizations.

The Enrollment Trends Snapshot is produced by the Medicaid and CHIP Learning Collaborative (MACLC), using CMS PI data. CMS began releasing this new data product in September 2020 to provide a retrospective view of the past 12 months of Medicaid and CHIP enrollment up to the most recent monthly enrollment report and compares enrollment to various factors. The complete dataset is available on Data.Medicaid.gov. This tool will help to easily track trends in Medicaid and CHIP program enrollment and also look at the potential drivers of increases in enrollment.

Almost continually since August 2022, the EU+ countries (EU member states plus Norway and Switzerland) have received over 80,000 asylum applications per month, marking a significant increase that has not been observed for many years. In August 2023, this figure further increased to more than 100,000 applications, a level reminiscent of the refugee crisis of 2015-16. More recently, in October 2023 applications increased once again to 123,000, the most for seven years. Since August 2023, there has been a noticeable increase in asylum applications and if the current trends continue, it is projected that the EU+ will receive well over a million asylum applications by the end of 2023.

These concurrent trends - the surge in asylum applications and the influx of displaced persons from Ukraine - are exerting immense strain on the EU+ asylum and reception systems. National authorities are being pushed to their limits in their efforts to accommodate and safeguard those in need.

To eliminate month-to-month fluctuations, the above chart offers a comprehensive overview of the asylum application trends of the top 20 nationalities in October 2023, over the last 12 months (yellow) in comparison to the preceding 12 months (blue). Syrians and Afghans lodged the most applications for asylum during both these time periods. However, Syrian applications saw a considerable increase (+45%), whereas Afghans applications remained stable.

Most citizenships in the chart exhibited an upward change in their application numbers, which is to some extent a statistical artefact because nationalities with declining trends are more likely to fall out of the top 20, while those with increasing trends tend to rise into the ranking. Nevertheless, it is notable that Ivorians and Turks both lodged more than twice as many applications in the 12 months leading up to October 2023. Similarly, Peruvians and Egyptians were just shy of also doubling their applications. Guineans, Russians and Moroccans also lodged many more applications during the same period.
