Description:  Install new channel letter sign on a raceway at a Landmark, commercial building.

Staff Recommendation:

The applicant for this proposal is the tenant of the ground-floor commercial space and is requesting to install a channel letter sign with a raceway. The HDLC Guidelines do not approve visible raceways or conduit. However, the applicant has made this proposal at the request of the owner of the building. The storefront on this Landmark building is new and only recently finished construction, it is also not a replica facade of the historic condition. This means that the storefront is a Non-Contributing portion of the Landmark building. The owner has required that the tenant does not connect any new signage to the beams of the new storefront to prevent damage. However, that does not leave many options for signage locations. The applicant has also applied for a projecting sign that does meet the Guidelines and will be approved at Staff level. Due to the Non-Contributing status of the storefront, but the Landmark status of the building, and that the proposal does not meet the Guidelines, Staff leaves the recommendation at the discretion of the Commission.
