Ross White
Ross has been fishing as long as he can remember, first as a kid on local ponds and lakes where he grew up in Connecticut. When he was in middle school he started tying flies with a vise and the Noll fly tying book, gifts from an uncle who first introduced him to fishing, and also gave him his first fly rod.
After college, while working as a Security Guard at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, Ross regularly visited the Housatonic River where he taught himself to fly cast. Several years later, he moved moved to Colorado to pursue a creative career, and ended up living in Denver for almost eight years. During this period, he started Deli Fresh Design, which he ran for a decade, making fishing packs and accessories out of repurposed fishing waders and other recycled materials.
While living in Colorado's he fished most of the premier tailwaters including the Colorado, Arkansas and South Platte where he learned how to be an efficient nympher. He also spent considerable time sight-fishing for the resident carp on the South Platte.
In 2018, Ross visited the Catskills for the first time, and spent the following summers van camping and fishing the region. In 2023, he moved back East to settle in Roscoe, New York. The deep fly fishing history, readily available dry fly fishing and access to New York City were all big draws.
As a grade school kid, Ross's uncle introduced him to bamboo fly rods. While living in Denver, he built his first rod by taking a class at a local fly shop. He has spent the last decade building, repairing and fishing with bamboo. Recently he has been designing bamboo spey rods for modern Scandi and Skagit fly lines. Compared to Graphite or Fiberglass casting a bamboo rod is a completely different experience.
