CATNIP
Categories Networking Project
CATNIP is a scientific network between the University of Aberdeen, the University of Edinburgh and the University of Strathclyde; it is focused on category theory, both in its foundational aspects and in its interactions with computer science and with other areas of mathematics, such as topology, algebra, mathematical physics and applied mathematics.
Network Organizers
Jules Hedges , Department of Computer and Information Sciences, University of Strathclyde.
Chris Heunen, School of Informatics, University of Edinburgh.
Tom Leinster, School of Mathematics, University of Edinburgh.
Simona Paoli , Department of Mathematics, University of Aberdeen.
The network is supported by a grant from the Isaac Newton Institute for Mathematical Sciences and EPSRC (Ref EP/V521929/1).
CATNIP has three one-day meetings per year, one in each of the three Universities. Several distinct features give it a very low threshold for interaction among the community.
Scientific talks are accessible to all: relevant background material is provided beforehand, and motivation is emphasised. Interacting with people outside your specific research area is encouraged.
Early career researchers count: they can gain research advice, peer interaction, and informal mentoring, in an open and low-pressure environment.
Minorities are supported: we are strongly committed to supporting underrepresented groups, including women. Funding is available to take away obstacles such as childcare, unusual accommodation needs, or audio-visual accessibility tools. The programme includes moderated discussions about equality, diversity, and inclusion in our community.
