Direct Carbon Fuel Cell (DCFC) employs solid carbon such as biomass, coal, petroleum coke, and municipal carbon wastes for conversion of chemical energy to electricity. The electrical efficiency of power generation from the DCFC can reach up up 100%; by contrast, traditional coal-fired power plants are subject to thermodynamic limitation with an efficiency around 30 to 40%. In addition, the DCFC produces less noise and pure carbon dioxide for direct sequestration without energy intensive purification process. Besides, the infrastructure for scale up, including transportation, storage, and processing of solid carbon fuel have been well-established.
