520 "In this richly diverse collection of essays, Joseph Brodsky casts a reflective eye on his experiences of early life in Russia and exile in America. With dazzling erudition, he explores subjects as varied as the dynamic of poetry, the nature of history and the plight of the émigré writer. There is also the humorous tale of a disastrous trip to Brazil, advice to students, a homage to Marcus Aurelius and studies of Robert Frost, Thomas Hardy, Horace and others. The second volume of essays following Less Than One, this collection includes Brodsky's 1987 Nobel Lecture, 'Uncommon Visage'." - from Google books

Description:

I had originally wanted to catalog a comic book as part of the assignment, but every single comic book I owned was already in WorldCat. I looked up alternative comics, indie comics, manga, comics I had ordered from Spain , comics I had ordered from France, zines (just out of curiosity at this point), and I always saw the (now dreaded) desc=i, 040 $e rda. In defeat, I ended up going with the book that I am currently reading.

I expected the cataloging process for the book to go fairly smoothly considering that LIS 703 consisted of solely cataloging books. I was mostly right, except that this book had a curveball -- two publishing houses. Most of the editions of this book that are out and circulating showed that it was published solely by Farrar, Straus and Giroux, not the never-heard-of Noonday press (my edition). I compared both the edition I found online and the one I had on hand and I found that the ISBN and the publication date were different. On the title page verso, it was noted that "The Noonday press is a division of Farrar, Straus and Giroux." I made the choice to put both of them down in the $b field in 245 since OCLC said that it was repeatable. Since the more popular edition is not Noonday but rather the one that is published solely by FSG, I made sure to include FSG in all applicable fields and I made sure to note Noonday's relationship with Farrar in the 500 note field. I did this to keep in mind the user who might be searching for the book as published by FSG.

His baby is born half human, half lizard! The reptilian baby slithers on the floor, leaving a wet trail of slime behind. To his horror, his wife, Akiki, holds it lovingly in her arms. Description:

I found this DVD last summer in a Little Free Library in my neighborhood. It wasn't until I selected this DVD to be part of my cataloging portfolio that I realized it was a part of a box set. Most of the cataloging difficulties I stumbled upon were due to the fact that this DVD was originally part of a box set that I did not own.

For example, for a while, I was split on whether I should use "Hino Hideshi's Theater of Horror" or "Lizard Baby" as the main access point. And for field 245, I debated whether to transcribe "$a Lizard Baby" or "$a Hideshi Hino's Theater of Horror $p Lizard Baby." In OCLC's bibformats guide, it says that $p is meant to name a "part/section of a work." Technically, Lizard Baby is a part of the box set, so I decided on the latter. But, for fields 130 and 246, I decided to only include "Lizard Baby". I did this because it is no longer in the box set and the user searching for the item would need to know that this is a DVD no longer in its set. I also made sure to make a note of it in a 500 field.

I made a few 500 note fields. In one 500 field, I wrote the original publishing date since it was not found on the container. I had to look it up and I found it important enough to include. I included another 500 field to note that the movie was based on the horror manga written by Hideshi Hino. I think that manga /comic book readers who might be searching for Hino's books would benefit from seeing the movie included in their search results.

Lastly, I was afraid I would miss some of the core elements that needed to be transcribed per OCLC Best Practices because I did not have the box set that it came with. I suspect there is a lot more information on the box. I debated whether to look up the information online, but I decided against it because, again, the DVD is not part of the set anymore. I filled out the core elements as much as I could with the information provided on the container. Two core elements that I was not able to fill out were the 020 field and the 250 field. I did create a 028 field with the only ID number I could find on the container. I could not find an edition statement, even after searching it up online, so I made a note of the lack of edition statement in a 500 note field. I debated whether to have the edition be "DVD," but decided against it since it was already in field 347.

Description:

For the 337 field, I debated whether to put down three-dimensional form or tactile three-dimensional form. I looked up some records on WorldCat and on the Chicago Public Library OPAC to see what other catalogers decided on. Most records showed three-dimensional form but a few also chose tactile dimensional form. I decided on the latter because the former seems to suggest that it is an object that is ready to be used/is complete without touching.

For the edition statement, I wasn't sure what to write since there was no mention of an edition on the container. I decided on MB Puzzles since it is a branch of Hasbro Inc. that focuses on puzzles.

Lastly, for the variant field, I decided to add "wolf jigsaw puzzle," since I think that it would be the most common way that the puzzle would be searched for.

Description:

The 028 fields were tricky to me because they required me to research what each number/code meant in the container, sometimes to no avail. I inscribed the only two codes I found.

Oddly, this video game came with a pamphlet. Most video games coming out today don't have one. I found it fascinating and I made sure to mention it in the 300 field. The pamphlet had illustrations, character pictures, instructions, and credits. The credits in particular made it so that I was able to fill out the 508 field nicely, followed by the 700 fields. The relationship designators listed in RDA were not as extensive as the ones found in the credits, and many of their "relationships" were not found in the appendix. As a result, I had to write them in myself as found on the container. I also made the choice to omit some of the people who are found in the credits, mostly due to the size of the MARC record. It was getting too large and I wondered whether putting in every single piece of information found in the credits would be useful to the user, or make the item more findable. It seemed to be that it wouldn't.

I also wasn't sure whether to count this game as a series. There have been other Chibi-Robo games made, but that didn't necessarily make it a series. When I was researching for more information on the game, the opening line in Wikipedia read: "Chibi-Robo! (Japanese: ちびロボ!) is a series of adventure video games developed by Skip Ltd. and published by Nintendo." I started filling out the series fields in the MARC record, but then I went on Nintendo's website and they described their Chibi-Robo games as being more of a franchise. I also found no series authority record for the game. I decided to omit the series fields from the MARC record.

Description:

In the year 2000, when this CD came out, I was only in 1st grade. I was a young child who loved pop and, of course, Paulina Rubio. My dad would often go to record stores back then so one day I asked him to please buy me this CD. It was one of the first CDs I owned. After all these years, it's still a great album! I thoroughly enjoyed listening to it again while working on the MARC record.

Anyway, I digress. Out of all the items we had to catalog, I felt that this item was the "easiest" to catalog. I didn't use my judgment too much. It might have been because it was the last item that I cataloged and, by this point, many fields were familiar to me. Yet, despite this, I also feel the least confident about how I cataloged this item. My lack of confidence stems from the lack of guidance the RDA Music Best Practices gave. I did have to look at other MARC records for guidance a lot, more so than with the other items. I don't trust other people's records though (no offense people), hence my slight lack of confidence. I used and relied on the other resources (RDA and OCLC) a lot for this record. Not that I didn't for the others. I definitely did! But for this one, they were my sole guidance.
