Steering Committee Updates

May/June 2019 - The Cataloging Ethics Steering Committee is working on placing volunteers into Working Groups. 

June 2019 - Email invitations to join a Working Group sent. Working Group membership will be finalized June 25, 2019.

July 2019 - Working Group membership finalized. Leadership elections will be held for each Working Group. Working Groups preparing to start their work officially on August 1, 2019.

August 2019 - Working Groups begin work on their assigned area and continue working until reports are due in November 2019.

November 2019 - the Steering Committee begins reviewing the Working Group reports and will use the information to produce a cataloging ethics document that will be posted publicly in April 2020.

March 2020 - the Steering Committee is still working on a draft of the cataloging ethics document and plans to have a draft posted for public comment in mid-May, rather than April. 

May/June 2020 - the Steering Committee will have a draft code of ethics ready at the beginning of June 2020, and will present their work to-date on Wednesday, June 10 at 11am CST at the Competencies & Education for a Career in Cataloging Interest Group session. July/August 2020 - the DRAFT Cataloguing Code of Ethics is available for public comment. Click here to access the draft and provide comments

September 2020 - Second DRAFT of the Cataloguing Code of Ethics is available for public comment. Click here to access the draft and provide comments. 

November 2020 - Steering Committee finalizing code of ethics document.

January 2021 - The final version of the Cataloguing Code of Ethics is now available.

February 2021 - the Cataloging Ethics Steering Committee will present at the Competencies & Education for a Career in Cataloging Interest Group session during CORE 2021 Virtual Interest Group Week. March 2021 (ongoing) - the Steering Committee is now accepting community-generated case studies that help illustrate the Statements in the Cataloguing Code of Ethics. Case studies should be submitted via this page: Case Studies page

May 2021 - Seeking endorsement of the Cataloguing Code of Ethics from the American Library Association (ALA) and the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals (CILIP).

June 2021 - The Cataloging Ethics Steering Committee spoke with the CILIP International Library & Information Group on June 16. The presentation was titled "International Cataloguing Ethics? Planting the Seeds."

July 2021 - The Cataloging Ethics Steering Committee will present at the Orbis-Cascade Alliance Summer Meeting. The presentation is titled "Ethics, the catalog, and you: How the Cataloguing Code of Ethics can inform your EDI initiatives" and is scheduled for July 14 at 12pm CST.

August 2021 - The Cataloging Ethics Steering Committee will present a CORE webinar titled "Walking the talk: realizing ethical considerations" on Tuesday, August 10, 2021 at 1pm CST. November 2021 - The Board of CORE, a division of the American Library Association, has endorsed the Cataloguing Code of Ethics: https://alacorenews.org/2021/11/10/core-endorses-the-cataloguing-code-of-ethics/ 

April 2022  - ARLIS Cataloguing & Classification Committee hosted Jane Daniels and Diane Pennington, who gave the presentation titled Cataloguing Code of Ethics 2021 - Conception, Community and Continuation, on April 29, 2022. October 2022 - The Collections Trust annual conference on 6th October 2022 included a presentation by Jane Daniels entitled The Cataloguing Code of Ethics 2021: guidance for inclusive, collaborative and representative collections cataloguing. Click here to view the presentation.

October 2022 - Karen Snow and Beth Shoemaker presented a webinar on the Cataloguing Code of Ethics to LIANZA CAT SIG (New Zealand) for their Professional Development Online Talk Series. Recording on YouTube: https://youtu.be/PYB29pxSaGU   

December 2022 - The Cataloging Ethics Steering Committee wrote an article "The Development and Future of the Cataloguing Code of Ethics" which is a "latest article" in Cataloging & Classification Quarterly. The pre-print is available here

January 2023 - In July 2022, the Canadian Federation of Library Associations - Fédération canadienne des associations de bibliothèque (CFLA-FCAB) approved the creation of a review working group for the Cataloguing Code of Ethics. The Code will be translated into French and a series of regional consultations is taking place during 2023. 

February 2023 - ISKO Research Observatory hosted Jane Daniels who gave a presentation entitled The Cataloguing Code of Ethics 2021: informing subject cataloguing and indexing for marginalised communities on 25th January, 2023. Click here to access the event page and the presentation slides. 

February 2023 - Diane Pennington spoke about the Cataloguing Code of Ethics  at the SCURL EDI Network Conference, which took place on Thursday 2 February 2023 in collaboration with the CILIPS Metadata & Discovery Group Scotland. View the presentation here

April 2023 - An article by Jane Daniels and Diane Rasmussen Pennington titled, "The Cataloguing Code of Ethics 2021: Conception, Community and Continuation" was published in Art Libraries Journal  (volume 48, issue 2). https://napier-repository.worktribe.com/output/3038606 

April 2023 - The Cataloging Ethics Steering Committee will present the Cataloguing Code of Ethics during the South African LIASA IGBIS online event "The Cataloguing Code of Ethics – a South African context" on April 25, 2023. May 2023 - The Cataloging Ethics Steering Committee will present a webinar hosted by the University of Macedonia Library, Greece on May 4, 2023. Click here to view the presentation. 

May 2023 - Members of the Cataloging Ethics Steering Committee ran an interactive webinar on the Cataloguing Code of Ethics and its practical application on 24th May at the CALC23 (Critical Approaches to Librarianship) conference.
