Venkataraman Sundareswaran, MCHC Fellow, AI & Machine Learning, World Economic Forum

Bio

Sundar is an Artificial Intelligence Fellow at the World Economic Forum, where he is co-creating a governance framework with a multi-stakeholder community for the use of Chatbots in healthcare. He represents Mitsubishi Chemical Holdings Corporation in this role at the Forum’s Centre for the Fourth Industrial Revolution. Sundar is a seasoned technologist with research, development, P&L and executive leadership experience. With a Master’s degree in Natural Language Understanding and a PhD in Computer Vision, Sundar made numerous research contributions in robotics, neural networks, human computer interaction, virtual/augmented reality and autonomous vehicles, prior to taking leadership roles in advanced technology production facilities. He is passionate about responsible deployment of novel technologies in societally important areas such as healthcare.

Valerie Shalin, Adjunct Professor of CSE and Psychology, Professor of Psychology at Wright State University

Bio

Dr. Shalin specializes in technology to support workplace cognition, having studied aviation, computer repair, emergency response, internal and surgical medicine and space exploration. Trained as an applied Cognitive Scientist at the University of Pitttsburgh’s Learning Research and Development Center, she started her career as an engineer at Honeywell Systems and Research Center and subsequently moved to academia with positions at SUNY Buffalo Department of Industrial Engineering and Wright State University’s Department of Psychology. At Wright State she began a long-term collaboration with AIISC founder Professor Amit Sheth, working the interpretation of social media as a source of insight into public behavior. Dr. Shalin’s content-oriented analyses of human behavior characterize workplace cognition as distributed over people in a physical and cultural context. She is co-editor of the seminal volume on Cognitive Task Analysis, co-recipient of the 2016 Human Factors Prize for Excellence in Human Factors Research for her use of Big data and recognized in 2004 NASA “Turning Goals into Reality” award as part of the Ames team that supported operations for the Mars Exploration Rover. In addition to her current appointments as Adjunct Faculty at UofSC’s Department of Computer Science as well as Psychology, she has collaborated with the French national institute for digital science and technology (INRIA-Est) as an invited Researcher/Professor studying trust in distributed systems. Dr. Shalin has served on the editorial boards for Human Factors and Journal of the Learning Sciences and is presently on the editorial board for PLOS-One.

Sachindra Joshi, IBM Research

Bio

Sachindra Joshi is a distinguished Engineer and manages the AI for Interaction department at IBM India Research Lab that focuses on research in natural language processing, question answering, conversation modeling, process mining and automation. He also leads the conversation AI effort across IBM research and work closely with different labs and business divisions to create state-of-the-art conversation technologies and integrate them with IBM products and services. He has over 70 research papers in top journals and conferences. He also has over 50 patents to his name. Prior to joining IBM research, Sachindra completed Masters in Computer Science and Engineering from Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay in year 2000.

Becky Inkster, University of Cambridge and Alan Turing Institute, UK

Bio

Becky is a neuroscientist, seeking innovative ways to improve our understanding and treatment of mental health in the digital age. She applies measured optimism when working across artificial intelligence-enabled mental healthcare, neuroscience, ethics and governance, as well as digital-, clinical-, and music-based interventions, social media, and public engagement, especially with young people and underrepresented groups. She provides cross-sectorial guidance and leadership on mental health innovations to numerous institutions and companies that span academia, technology, human rights, mental healthcare, and government.
