RAIN, by Noah Doss (Washington State University, Vancouver)
RAIN
But it’s bright out
The clouds aren’t even dark, it’s
More like white out
Above some farmer’s markets.
Eigenvalues and Degree Theory
There’s enough time for just one query
Of our fine presenters here, we
Know questions are not things for fearing.
We don’t byte, no that’s comp sci
Our whole job’s to question why!
And not for hope of application
(Unless some scientist sees some relation)
Well we all knew a clear day wouldn’t last
But rain can’t put a damper on RAIN math
For we’ll take talks on PDEs
Until the coffee break at three
And then when we resume our talks
We’ll know there’s drinks ‘round 5 o’clock
And as the rain picks up again
Our RAINy day comes to an end
The Morning Session at Cascade RAIN, by Sophie Kristensen (Portland State University)
The sun is out as we arrive for a day at RAIN
we begin with a leisurely hour
where the typical PDX hipster food is provided
Coffee
Yogurt
Granola
Tea
While entertained by Dr. Ovall’s many jokes
we all say our hellos and finally take our seats.
The talks of the day dawn by method of luck and a small green cap
19 minutes each all speakers receive
Dr. Ovall waves his umbrella at all in the room
to let us know he is dead serious about that.
First up,
a story of eigenvalues
what follows are some more of our favorite tales
Numerical approximations
Degree theory
Harmonic functions
Integral equations.
The first session ends with us all content
for even on a Saturday morning
we are ecstatic to be in a room full of
Math
the subject that consumes all of our thoughts
and days (in a good way!)
and the love interest in all of our lives.
So make sure to enjoy the rest of the day
and to thank the Cascade RAIN
for yet another excuse
to talk and think about our love
that is Math.
A Fifth of Cascade RAIN, by Jeff Ovall (Portland State University)
We imbibed a fifth of Cascade RAIN.
Sampling delicacies both earthy and sublime
some with a complex flavor.
PDEs? Yes, please.
Linear algebra? Positively, definitely.
Data analysis? (Topo) logically.
Statistical techniques? Probably.
Optimization? Nearly.
How did we celebrate afterward?
We plead the fifth.
Out of respect for the privacy of the winners, if you want to know what award they won, you will have to ask them. There were several ties this year.
