If you have traveled to Costa Rica before, you will be accustomed to our famous way of giving directions. Although some of our streets have names and numbers, this is not common throughout the country, much less in places far from the capital.
In Costa Rica, we are guided by reference points, which often causes confusion for many visitors and more than one Costa Rican.
When you come to Costa Rica, make sure you have a GPS, such as Google Maps or Waze, and if possible download an offline map of the areas you will be visiting.
In this post we will give you tips to make your trip from your arrival airport more comfortable, take note:
A very convenient way for those who do not want to drive across the country. There are multiple companies that can offer you the service, however, it is usually the most expensive option. There are many options, but make sure it is a company with good recommendations, to avoid bad times.
Renting a car gives you the freedom to explore the area at your own pace. At any airport you will find offices of different companies that fit your budget or plans. While most roads in Costa Rica are paved, you are sure to find streets with some infrastructure problems, so we recommend a 4WD car. As we mentioned before, it's also wise to have a map of the area you want to visit on your phone. If you want to have your cell phone line connected, we recommend buying a chip (preferably Kölbi as it has the best coverage).
Nosara and nearby cities such as Nicoya and Liberia have Rent A Car company offices, so you can take or leave your car at one of the points that best suits you.
From Juan Santamaría Airport approximately 5 hours (not including stops for snacks or lunch, and outside of high traffic hours), and from Liberia Airport approximately 2.5 hours. This is the most recommended option when you come to Casa Gecko, as you can travel more comfortably from its private location to Guiones Town and other interesting points.
If you land at Juan Santamaría Airport, you can take a direct domestic flight to Nosara airport, which is very convenient if you travel with little luggage and want to save a lot of time. The flight is offered by the SANSA company every day. More information here
From this point you can take a rented vehicle or you can contact us to coordinate your transfer to Casa Gecko.
Technically, you can get anywhere in Costa Rica by bus. It is an economical option, it requires a lot of coordination and patience. Some trips are direct, for example between major cities such as San José to Nicoya or Liberia. However, you will need to take more buses to get to Nicoya. The hours are usually extended but they do not work 24 hours a day, and if they are "holidays" they usually reduce the number of units working (or not working at all).
- Check the maps of the places you are going in advance.
-Try to have a Costa Rica phone line to use maps or make calls in case you need to find your way, or download offline maps on Google Maps.
- If you ask a Tico for directions and help, chances are they will kindly help you, as we are very helpful; However, you must be cautious, because unfortunately you can find people who take advantage of your situation to profit, such as theft or scams.
- Keep Casa Gecko's contact number handy: Inés: 7110-0751. Whether you have your Costa Rican phone line or ask a Tico for help, call us to guide you.
