Class overview
This course is called "effective speech" because it is about more than just public speaking. This is a general education course geared to help improve your communication skills, specifically within groups. The goal of CAS 100B differs from the goal of the other sections of CAS 100, with the goal of CAS 100B directed toward skill development in effective group communication, with less emphasis on formal public speaking and message evaluation. Toward the end, class size is limited and class meetings involve considerable attention to group dynamics, teamwork, and effective communication within groups. Through in-class activities, peer critiques, and analysis of both process and product, this course is designed to allow students to actively work in groups and engage in self-analysis of their own group processes. Structurally, this course begins with discussion of the principles of effective communication and public presentation and then covers significant course content addressing group communication and group process. This course enables students to work more effectively in groups, develop teams, and make effective group and individual presentations. At least one individual speech, several group communication activities, and one message evaluation are required in this course
One of the best ways for us all to learn together is to TALK together. Whether you are talking this class online or in person, you will have lots of opportunities to get to know your classmates and talk to them about what we are learning.
You will only have one solo speech in this class. For midterms, your group will choose a local nonprofit to teach the class about.
In addition to presenting, you will also be meeting. Each of you will create an agenda for one group meeting and lead the group on that day. You all will also need to be the group's secretary and take minutes for one group meeting.
After the midterm presentations, we will vote on our favorite nonprofit. Whether in person or online, we will spend the second half of the class planning an activity that allows us to support the organization. This is always a very fun experience. I have examples below!
The class had a volunteer drive and then we went together to help the River Watchers clean for Earth Day. We were featured on the news!
This class collected used items on campus and hosted our first rummage sale. It was a huge success!
