CAS 100A Summer Syllabus

Overview

The summer section of CAS 100 moves quickly. There are six weeks. This course is usually sixteen weeks during a regular semester, but for the summer we condense it significantly. Because of this, you will have much more work each week than would be typically during a regular semester class.

Below, you can find some of the activities and assignments you can expect, as well as a list of ways I will help you succeed. I also have a list of ways you can help ME help you succeed.

What will we do?

Speeches

You will present two speeches, which will be pre-recorded and adhere to the guidelines in Canvas.

Speech Outlines

To prepare for your speeches, you will create two speaking outlines (one for your informative speech and one for your persuasive).

Discussions

Each week, we will have discussions that relate to the class content. This is a space designed to allow you to learn from your classmates and get to know them.

Peer Reviews

You will also review the speeches of your peers by watching their video then giving providing them feedback.

What do I need from you?

There are a few things that I need from you to ensure that this class can be great.

You will read the textbook. I know that reading can be a drag, but it is really important that you read your book chapters.
You will watch the weekly recording. Each week, I offer a lecture. You are welcome to join me live for this lecture, but it isn't required. Instead, I need you to watch the recording and respond to the weekly secret question.
You will respect your classmates and try your best in the discussions. The discussions are a major learning tool for the class. It is very important that you give them your best.
You will reach out to me if you are struggling with an assignment. Work can be overwhelming in a summer course. I need you to please not wait until an assignment is late to notify me you are struggling. Please reach out to me.

What do I offer you?

I will reply to your questions promptly. Normally, you can expect a reply from me within 72 hours (don't forget, email only).
I will ensure that assignments are always clear. I use a system called transparent assignment design, which means I not only use detailed rubrics but also help make sure that you know why assignments connect to class materials and our learning objectives.
I will treat you with respect and be understanding. I was a student for a very long time--so I know the various struggles. Please don't be afraid to reach out to me--my goal is to succeed.
