As you should know by now if you have been reading my articles, Gmail, like everything Google, is not private. In this article, I will show you some alternative providers with better privacy.
Apple users have a better option pre-installed on their device. Apple Mail can be used as a client for other accounts, or on its own using an iCloud address. Apple Mail has the ability to shield you from many types of email trackers and has no cookies. And it's free! However, it is a separate app, not a website, and it is only available on Apple devices.
StartMail, made by Startpage, is a more private email service. It works in all email clients, so you can access it wherever you email. Unlimited aliases, tracker prevention, and PGP encryption make it well worth its $5 per month price tag.
Tutanota is a free, open-source alternative to Gmail. Their features are relatively basic, but you can upgrade to get more. They also have calendars and contacts. They have a website, but you can also use Tutanota in a separate app.
Fastmail is another private email alternative. They have all of the same features as Gmail while respecting your privacy. You can use up to 600 aliases to keep your address private, and Fastmail will not track you because they make their money from subscriptions ($3-9/month), not ads.
DuckDuckGo offers a second layer of email protection to your provider of choice. It strips trackers from emails sent to your @duck.com address and forwards them, tracker-free, to your email. To get it, download the mobile app and join the waitlist.
