There are many things people look for in search engines. In this article, we will look at the two main categories: Privacy and User Experience. Each category will have criteria, and search engines will get a score on each one. The scores will then be added up to give each search engine an overall grade. An explanation of the grading criteria used above.
Search engines are central to our use of the internet, so it is important to choose a good one. In this article, we graded seven major search engines in two important categories: Privacy and User Experience.
We chose privacy because keeping your internet traffic private is important, and this should extend to search engines. Also, private search engines are less likely to show you biased results because they don't have information on you to use when picking results you will be interested in. While these engines have more relevant results, it comes at the cost of only seeing one side of the story. This is especially true with politics. Engines like Google will only show you good things about candidates you like, and only bad things about their opponents. However, a private search engine does not know who you support, so they can't filter results like this.
User experience means things like the site's interface and the quality (and quantity) of search results. A cluttered interface with lots of confusing buttons and pop-ups makes it hard to find the results you are looking for. On the other hand, a neat interface with less ads makes for a much better searching experience. As for results, a search engine's job is to find things on the internet related to your search. If they find only a small amount of things, or if the things they do find are not relevant, then an engine has failed to do its job. A search engine that finds more relevant results is more useful than one that finds few (or none).
