The World Grand Prix (often shortened to WGP) is a racing competition in Cars 2 around which all the events of the film revolve. It was set up by former oil tycoon Miles Axlerod, who invited race cars from around the world supposedly to determine the world's fastest car and promote his new alternative fuel, Allinol. However, behind this facade the competition was actually a conspiracy whose true goals were much more ambitious and devious. Designed by Axlerod with the criminal Lemons group, it aimed at discrediting definitively alternative fuel to safeguard the domination of conventional fuel. This conspiracy was discovered by Finn McMissile, who worked behind the scenes to expose it, with the contribution of Mater and Holley Shiftwell.

The World Grand Prix was meant to be larger than and unlike any sports event before. Set at a grandiose scale and enjoying enormous publicity, it took place in some of the most prestigious cities across the world. It was composed of three legs; the first race took place at Tokyo, Japan, the second at Porto Corsa, Italy, and the final at London, United Kingdom. All three races were set in the streets of the host city. Each circuit was designed to incorporate various terrain types, like a dirt section, or tight curves, giving cars from drastically different racing types a chance of equality. All racers used Allinol as their only fuel, except for Lightning McQueen who had his swapped out with Fillmore's organic biofuel because Sarge didn't trust oil companies.

The Hydrogen Grand Prix (H2GP) program challenges tomorrow's innovators to design, engineer, build and race their own hydrogen-powered cars. Throughout the program, these future leaders develop the creativity, ingenuity and real-world problem-solving skills needed to tackle tomorrow's energy challenges.

McLaren Applied Technologies has sets out the ultimate vision for grand prix racing three decades from now, predicting that racing will be all-electric with the advanced use of artificial intelligence (AI).

Racing could become an incubator for the development of AI, just as it has for simulation, big data and material science. The driver of the future will receive less information from the pitwall, and rely instead on an AI co-pilot. Engineering an evermore powerful and intuitive AI will be a significant performance differentiator in grand prix racing by 2050. ff782bc1db
