Reading Tips for Parents: Reading with Family Improves Achievement
Research shows that children who read at home with their families do better in school. To help your child develop reading skills:
- Keep reading materials handy: magazines, books, and newspapers.
- Have your child read aloud. Take turns reading and discuss the reading together.
- Talk about books: the plot, characters, and your child's reactions to them.
- Tell stories. Be creative and pretend. Choose topics your child can relate to.
- Point out words everywhere you go: signs and food packages.
- Set a good example by reading yourself every day.
